Title: And somehow my life gets worse
Post by: Fisherson on April 25, 2020, 08:39:43 PM
I know I shouldn't post my problems in a general area but as I've worked on a huge number of chain games and promote them for free I think I'm entitled to just one.

My beautiful ASUS TUF  Fx504 has died. Oddly this time not due to a virus but instead a broken hinge has finally ruined the display screen and despite my best efforts I can't figure out which wires or other doohickey makes it work. -_-;;  I'm afraid I need to buy a new one in the middle of a pandemic as my Laptop was all that was keeping me semi sane. I think you guys helped me pick this one so I'm gonna ask if I should just get the next in it's line or do you guys think I can get another better one for under 1,000$ that isnt a worthless mac?

I know this'll probably open a whole can of worms, but why the intense hatred for Macs?

Every Apple product including three computers, and four media-player/phones I've ever owned still works reliably to this day. I still use my 2012 Macbook Pro on a daily basis for work/programming over my custom built computer that has a 2080ti. The operating system is very user friendly, and more importantly for me and my development, is that it's Unix based and works very naturally with Linux based servers. When I used to play games on it, I used the built in tools to install Windows on it. It's not virtualized, it's its own partitioned off full operating system installation that has full access to the hardware so there's no performance loss. OSX is nice, and top of that it doesn't do all the Telemetry stuff Microsoft does now, which is essentially spyware preinstalled into all Windows devices.

They are nice computers that are built to last. Mine is eight years old and outside of gaming rarely shows its age at all. Furthermore with Thunderbolt gen 3, there's enough bandwidth to use an external GPU anyways, all you have to do is plug it into a chassis and plug that in.

Is the hatred because they're expensive? They certainly are expensive, but considering how long they last, it's certainly cheaper in the long run than buying a cheap laptop every year and a half.

I'm not trying to convince you to buy one, I'm just curious why you seem to hate them so much.

From my experience, you can get a really good laptop for half the price of a Mac. If you compare a Window machine and Mac side-by-side for the same price, the Windows machine has much better specs and costs less.

The main reason I would pick a PC is that most games are tuned better towards PC, sure you can use that thingy to emulate PC on your mac for the sake of games but y'know.

Now, if I was in the music industry or any other industry really that focused on me doing a lot of fancy things with a computer, I'd get a Mac no doubt about it.

I hate Macs because when I had the opertunity to finally learn how to hard code it was Javascript on a Mac. -.-;; I failed because the Mac's set up was so diferent to my ADD brain that had been using microsoft since Windows 95. To this day I blame Mac for me not being able to learn how to use simple non engine based code, though to be fair GMS deserves some credit for humiliating me in my twenties XD

Secondly I got a deal on a 1300$ Alienware 15M which also may have solved my credit card problem too. It's got an RTX card, little less memory 400 GB compared to my 2TB but I still have my 1 TB drive. So far though I had to take my wi-fi hotspot back to the library and only got part of MHW downloaded annnnd Skyrim won't boot but otherwise it is lovely and runs smooth.

It sounds like you just don't like Game Maker Studio (GMS?).

I am a Javascript developer by profession.

Javascript is wholly independent of operating system. IDE's like Visual Studio Code or Atom are essentially the same on any operating system, and Javascript is primarily served in web browser, which is also operating system indifferent. There is literally no difference in standard Javascript writing or compilation between Windows, OSX, or any flavor of Linux.

It's not emulated. You can literally partition the drive and install Windows. Drivers are provided during the installation process too.

Yeah I finally got enough Wi-fi to complete it. It was in the personalization settings of all things. Troubleshooting finally bridged the gap somehow. So that part is out of the way. Now I need to finally try and look into Verizon and Spectrum self install kits and get enough wi-fi to try and straighten out Skyrim SE though I have a feeling my Aleinware is an exccelent laptop...but one of those that infamously won't work with SE. =/ Finally have to give it up. Pity as I just learned how to mod it in recent years and had so much fun with immersion tweaks. I literally spent HOURS just wondering the woods totally enjoying being a wild elf trapper. Hunting rabbits and foxes, dodging more advanced bandits and sleeping in a tent under the stars. Top ten of my gaming moments.
