Title: Should I get RPG Maker MV while it's 80% off?
Post by: Kilyle on December 10, 2021, 10:51:13 AM
'Cuz for three more days it's 80% off (https://store.steampowered.com/app/363890/RPG_Maker_MV/) (or 85% off if I go for a slightly larger bundle), but it's not the latest (MZ?), and I probably won't be using any RPG Maker soon (I'm a hobbyist at best, and very busy with other projects).  But it would allow me to make phone games, and I'm debating about grabbing it, because 80% off is nothing to sneeze at, and I like having options for the future.

So is this something I should pick up while it's cheap, or just ignore and buy MZ a couple years from now?  Thoughts?

If you don't have an rpg maker engine, then sure. But otherwise I really don't think there is much of a point of having several different version of it. They all pretty much do the same thing and the latest features isn't going to make or break your project. But then again, I haven't moved on from 2003.

I don't know too much about the different options but it might be worth it if you specifically want to make phone games. However if you don't think you'll be using it any time soon it might be worth waiting for MZ to be on discount, if you're into being up to date.

Same as Momeka I just use rm2k3 and when I'm not using that I'm programming for realsies, I don't have too much knowledge on how good the newer rpgmakers are  - though inevitably a new maker will inspire you to make games a slightly different way.

I personally LIKED MV when it wasn't hyper pay walls and people squirreling away code. It is still fun today and you can sell stuff through it but I feel every maker after VX era has only served to make things less indie and more corporate sadly. That being said I will reinterate that I do still have fun, honestly I do find mapping outside of paralax to be a little bit of a chore but other than that MV is very simple to use. One of the most modular and gets the least complaints on software.
