New laptop... Help...
« on: June 10, 2008, 03:30:39 AM »
Okay, so I just got a new laptop (Gateway FX) and it's the first computer I've ever had that only belongs to me. So far, it's the most amazing computer I've ever gotten to use and I love it a lot, but one thing is REALLY bothering me.

It seems that at random, an insanely short clip of a song plays. It often lasts for about a half of a second, but sometimes I can hear the first six notes. I know the song because Gary (Pyrofreak) once sent it to me a long time ago, but I don't know the name of it. I just have the original file, so I'll post a link. I don't know what it means, but even if it doesn't mean anything, it's still extremely annoying, especially since it doesn't happen too often so I always think it won't happen again.

I looked it up and it seems that older versions of Windows randomly played Fur Elise or It's a Small World to indicate a failing CPU fan, but this isn't either of those songs and I'm running Vista.

Does anyone know what's going on or at least what the name of the song is?

what vista are you using?

When i got my new laptop (almost 1 year ago exactly) I thought it was awesome city, until little gay things happened. And i realized that many of those factory issued gems that came on the computer were using up memory and fairly system intensive.

On my compaq before this one the same thing happened.
One of the first things i did was reformat my hard drive and install just a flat up copy of vista...
many of the gay little factory installed software dissapreaded, and i never had to hear the first few notes of some song. Just passing on an anecdote. Do with it what you will man.

It's Home Premium. What little gay things do you mean? The exact same thing? Random sound clips? Because you said "until" they happened. This has been happening all along. It doesn't seem like a usage thing or anything, but it could be a factory default. I'm gonna try deleting stupid unnecessary factory crap now. I hope it stops. Thanks for the advice.

It played something else now. It seems like the song is random too. Apparently radio waves can be picked up, but I can't see how that could be happening. I am connected through a wireless router, but my brother has a laptop too (his second actually) and he has never had this problem...

Everything I look up seems to be music that just randomly keeps playing, but mine starts and as soon as you noticed it stops. I contacted Gateway, but still, if anyone here has any clue, I really need help. It doesn't even sound like that big of a deal, but consider it happening to you. Every time you think it's gone, it just happens, and you can never know when. It's frustrating and annoying.

True. If worst comes to worst and I am out of options and luck, I can just reformat and use the backup OS disc that came with this. Thanks for your advice. I got a response to my plea to Gateway and followed what it said to do. My best guess was Napster. I knew it came with the computer, but I didn't realize it automatically was running, so I took it off of startup and uninstalled it (among other things).

Hit the Windows Key and type in msconfig and hit Enter. Click through the UAC, and you will be presented with a lovely window. Go to the Services tab, check the box "Hide All Microsoft Services," and look to see if there are any third party services running that you don't want to run. If there are, make sure to set them to disabled so they don't automatically start up. (You may want to uncheck Hide Microsoft Services and go to disabled the Search Indexing service but in my experience you don't gain much from this).

Then go to the boot tab and again look to see what you do and don't want starting up on boot. Click Apply (To be safe), OK, and reboot. That should help with third party tools starting up automatically.

I'm glad it's NOT your CPU failing, that would have sucked, but hey, that's what a warranty is for.

My new laptop is awesome.

A lot has happened. I'm grateful for all of your help, but I have some explaining to do.

That's what Gateway told me to do. It seemed to have worked, but then I heard music again later on. I figured there was something on my hard drive causing it, so I did what I said I'd do and made the horribly dumb mistake of reformatting it with the OS disc. Yeah, I completely didn't realize all the drivers and such I'd lose. Now I can't even get online. I'm back to the old PC right now. It's 3:00 AM. I just couldn't sleep after this happening. I talked to what seemed to be an automation of sorts online (though it may not have been, as it seemed to be a damn smart automation) in Gateway support that told me it would send me the discs to restore the initial drivers and such. I was excited and asked how much it would cost and was ready to get more info when the discussion ended. Do you think this means they sent them? I gave them my serial number so it would make sense that they had my address... Since my purchase would be archived...

EDIT: I found a page by typing in my serial number that gives me all the drivers and downloads it came with, so I'm burning them to a CD and crossing my fingers.
