Well, if you're making them for rm2k3, you need to consider the "horizon line".
The perspective in a battle is different than on the playfield, and there has to be a certain point where the ground stops and the sky/wall begins.
This is important and if overlooked, battle chars may appear walking on the walls!

The purple line in the example -strictly speaking- is the horizon line, but the green is about the allowance I would use.

With rm2k backdrops, there is more freedom, but still try to stick to the horizon line.
Nver make the horizon line too low, or it'll look 2D.
