That's something I remember always thinking they got wrong. Bardock could breath perfectly in space, so could all the other Saiyans, they were just kinda chillin there when Frieza killed them all... of course the series was riddled with many inconsistencies....

To be precise, in "Bardock, The Father of Goku" special, it is revealed that of all saiyans, only Bardock tries to stop Frieza. All those other hundred people there weren't saiyans, they were Frieza's henchman. That's how bad *** Frieza is. He doesn't care who he kills, as long as he kills.

But yeah, Bardock could breathe in space. Vegeta and Nappa could do the same, but maybe it has something to do with the enviroment they grew up in? Goku is the only one who never lived on planet Vegeta, so maybe they got enhanced, modified, used to breathing in space?
