OOOKAY big post time.

Slums, residential district sample.

Slums, business district sample.

Slums, interior of Harvey's General Store.

I use lots of textures in various forms when making chipsets.  Some are heavily modified, others are simply resized.  That's why lots of stuff doesn't look like I made it - I was too lazy to make my own versions.

For example, the wooden crate/box/what have you.  The texture for that was a direct rip.  I made another version.

Wow.  I spent way too much time on that tutorial.

And as for characters, I start with an empty character (no clothes, hair, eyes) and fill in the rest of the details on my own.

I can think of plenty of ways to make this post longer, but I won't.

EDIT: Here's one of those ways to make it longer.  http://www.irfanview.com/  This will help mucho.

Remove the watermark. Other than that, nice.

Nothing too major today... I started reworking pretty much all of my resources (not to mention a new signature and avatar).  Instead of directly ripping off textures for everything, I'm using them sparingly.  The ones I use will be very heavily modified to suit my needs.

Hand drawn corrugated steel, with some rust.  I used a reference photo for the colors.  Do you prefer the one on the left or the slightly darker version on the right?  . . . if you can tell the difference.

Both.  One looks like it is in shadows.  I would include both in a chipset.  (Also one that has the edges of a shadow)  They do that all the time in the Mac and Blue chipsets.)

Even more roofing!

The first one is heavily rusted corrugated steel.  The second one is roofing made with smaller sheets of newer steel.  The third is wood - looks pretty weathered.  All three are drawn using the line tool/pencil in MS Paint and a color enhancer in Ifranview.

For the steel, I realized that the fringes on the bottom won't work on a chipset.

These are all in 8-bit.  You just need to import them into a chipset somehow if you want to use them.  If you want, tell me what you are using them for but it's not really necessary.  I just want to know what's happening.

I've attached a little file explaining how all roofs I post will be formatted.  ROOFS ARE ALWAYS 48x48 (3 16px squares by 3 16px squares) unless I make a mistake.

Copying and pasting a texture is quick and easy, but it just isn't as fun as going pixel by pixel.

I personally think that the corrugated steel looks a bit like cardboard, but whatever.
Pretty sweet, overall.

A mostly hand-drawn version is on its way out.  A week, maybe?  Depends on how other things are going.

In the meantime, here's another little sample.

Oak and white oak.  Or old pine and unseasoned pine.  Or what have you.

EDIT:
Slums, residential sector.

Slums, business sector.

Slums, interiors.

I prefer that you tell me you are using these.  And remember - newer versions are coming out.  They won't be as detailed but at least they're original.
Just about done with the new roofs and walls for the slums.  Now I need to draw items and the ground sets.
Drawing dirt is a b'tch.
Last stuff for tonight.  Tomorrow I will have those Metal Gear Solid-like items.

A concrete wall, with dirt at the bottom.

Unseasoned pine wall, starting to deteriorate and turn green.

A sample of what I can do so far.  The side is a weathered wood.  (In other words, it's simply the old wood roof turned 90* and modified a bit.)

EDIT: Almost forgot.  The walls tile in the same way as the roofs.  And the two walls are already in 8-bit color, so feel free to use them.

I like where this is going. Some people might find the lack of outlines jarring, which is probably the biggest sticking point. Also might want to experiment with uniform shadows. But so far this is interesting.

Eh, I actually didn't want really strong outlines.  But I guess if people want it, I'll add it on.  As for shadows, well, shadows aren't exactly completely straight in real life  :P  Straight shadows towards the bottom looks off for some reason.
