Problem playing some MIDIs.
« on: September 27, 2009, 08:23:00 AM »
Hey. I got a new vista computer here, and it's totally awesome for doing things like playing audiosurf or spore or such, but not too great for RPG making, especially when considering that some songs don't play correctly on it. Now, I think that's more to blame on my sound card rather than the OS, but that's besides the point:

Basically, when playing midis, sometimes the volume of certain tracks just suddenly drops to extremely low levels... Nope, I don't know why either. It just does that on random notes in random tracks; sometimes the drum track, other times a bass track... No clue.  Only happens on some MIDIS as well, which is odd, and it's not always the crowded ones, either; some very complex midis can play on this computer just fine, but others have the aforementioned problem.

I'd go into Audacity and actually record what's happening, but for some odd reason, the proper menu for me to do that isn't there... So, I'll have to come back on that. Anybody got tips or tricks for this problem?

(I'm using a Realtek HD soundcard, I believe.)

EDIT: A precise example of the problem I'm experiencing.
Normal Midi example; should play normally and gracefully for y'all.
The damn **** I hear.

This might just be me being tired, but I'm not hearing the drop in tracks.

And the only thing I can think of is a faulty soundcard, but in that case most other sounds might **** up as well.
I'd go look up on some tech forums as well, cause I highly doubt we'll be able to help you much, this is kinda ****ing weird.

Apparently, Realtek HD is a bit known for having problems with midi. After a bit of searching I found that link up there. It's a driver. I don't think it fully replaces anything, but I'm not entirely sure. I've heard of it being used on Vista with success.

I noticed this when I first got my new PC. MIDIs changed dramatically. Some better, but most of them for the worst.
That's why I've changed to MP3s. Most people in this day and age play games around 12GB, so I'm sure they won't mind
an RPG around 50MB. I certainly don't. In fact, I believe a soundtrack's so important that I enjoy downloading huge games
with luscious soundtracks :D

Yeah, midis work fine on my vista.

Also, Audacity... there is something special you have to do for it record stuff from on your computer with vista.  It kinda sucks.
