The "I just bought a Steam game!!" thread
« on: April 26, 2010, 08:45:36 PM »
If anyone's bought a Steam game, here's the place to talk about it! The layout of the post has to be set like this:

Tell us about it: Okay, so I bought Shatter. It's really, really well made. In fact, probably the most polished game I've ever played.
It's a brick-breaking game, but with gorgeous HD graphics, effects, boss battles, powerups and polarity switches!
What's it good for? Fun as hell and probably good for parties. A little short for what you pay though.
Recommended? Personally, I'd try and pay a tiny bit less for it, as it's a little short. Short and sweet though - very fun!
I was also thinking of getting: Psychonauts. Shall I get it?

Next person answers! :D

Steam tried to CONSUME my computer, so I burned it. Don't see what all the fuss is about.

I'm sure you could manage the original Half Life games.

Why are you asking us when you could be buying it? That game is, by far, one of the best experiences I've ever had.

Oh, and here's my list. It includes a couple of non-Steam games, but only a handful.

Well, it's the beta. I'll make something a bit more streamlined when the final version is released.

I use Steam but I hate Steam. It annoys me downloading games I pay for if I wanted to download a game I wouldn't "pay" for it.
So I only use it because my friends do to play co-op easier.

Huh? You don't like the option of getting a game whenever you want, straight to your hard drive, without juggling a dozen or so disks? You're not happy with the idea of being able to install the games on any computer with Steam? What about Valve's games, which can be installed via disk or download? You're an odd one.

Well I don't like the idea of paying for something that have right then but I can't play until like a few days later when the download finishes (I have dsl uuugh)
Maybe if I had Cable (like I use to) I would like it better but atm its like if I have to spend forever downloading I don't feel like paying for it.
Though 1 download is enough for me since I have a couple of terabytes and lucky I never have to download again you know unless something goes wrong
and the wrong hardrives goes up in flames.

It's worth the wait, if you ask me. The advantages far out-weigh the disadvantages, and waiting to play a game never hurt anyone. Besides, when the Steam sales hit, you'd be insane not to grab a game because you don't like the delivery method. $5 for Bioshock? I'd have been insane if I said I'd rather deal with the disk-swapping, DRM and the higher price tag just so I wouldn't have to wait a few hours for a download.

However, I've always been the kind of person who really wants a physical copy of games. I also had to condition myself to like anti-aliasing in my graphics. I'm an odd one.

If Steam wasn't so damn cheap I wouldn't use it. It has a myriad of connecton fuckups and issues, and it's sometimes a struggle to get games to even download.

Yes I've opened ports. Yes I've fucked with my firewall. Yes I've done everything. Steam is just coded ****ing TERRIBLY.

I've always been a little wary about things like Steam that requite you to use the client software to play games that you bought. If or Steam decides they want to charge money to let you use it, or the servers that host it become unsupported, or your internet is working right for a while, or who knows what, there goes everything you spent money on. There's comfort in a CD. Even if it's an old game you haven't played in years since you can install the CDs and be playing the game within minutes risk free.

Though, on the other hand, 5 bucks for Bioshock is pretty darn cheap.

I both like and dislike Steam. For various reasons.
What I don't like though is being forced to open Steam even when I want to play offline. Plus, before I moved, when my Internet Connection was cut off, I couldn't even play Counter Strike offline because Steam couldn't update.

As for buying Steam games, well... I am currently too poor for that. I really need a job...
