Question on graphics license.
« on: January 21, 2013, 01:28:18 PM »
Hello everybody! I am making a game on a separate engine (my own one, not RPG Maker or any other Maker) and my question is whether the graphics from the generator are available for me to use in this case or is it copyrighted only for RPG Maker?

Thank you in advance!

I believe that the RTP that comes with rpg makers belongs to the company, I suppose that anything generated with parts from the rtp would fall under their ownership as well if you try to make money of your project. But I'm not sure what laws or rules would be applied to these types of things.

I'm fairly certain anything in the generators which hasn't come from the rtp is free to use.

I think this really needs to be made more clear on this site. I have gandered around this site for years and have not had a clear understanding of this either; so have not used nor contributed to the content on the site.

1. Can art from charas be used on non-rpgmaker projects?
2. How can we tell what belongs to rpg maker and what doesn't?

Resources from here can be used on any project, RPGM or otherwise, so long as it is non-profit. If it is for profit, consent from the creator is required. I'm not exactly sure how generated resources factor in, however.

Any official resources are property of Enterbrain, and may not be used for commercial products. The only way to truly know if a resource is from an official source is to look for yourself or ask someone who is well-versed in the resources of all versions of RPGM.

Be aware that not all available resources are original, and some may be ripped from other commercial games, making them property of the companies who created them.

TL;DR: As long as your project isn't for profit, anything is up for grabs. If you plan on making money, be absolutely certain that the resources aren't owned by a company, and that you contact the original author. The best idea for a commercial product would be to find someone to create original art for you, as it avoids the hassle of avoiding legal obligations to the original owners of the works.

Well that really sucks. I'm pretty far with my game already but I have no graphical skills whatsoever. Programming is my hobby and I'm just a student I don't have the money to pay for graphics - I will be barely able to scrap up some cash to pay for the initial server. I was planning to make the game earn money at least for me to be able to host it without spending my own funds. I can't use kickstarter either as this really is just a hobby project and I am uncertain if I will be able to finish it.
This sucks very hard. I guess I'm left with looking for people who can provide me graphics for free.

BTW I think you should really put the information about license in every graphic in the generator - that stuff is kind of essential for some people.

lol... No. These graphics were originally made to be used in a program called rpg maker. Anything made with that can't be sold for money anyways (at the time the generator was made), so there was no need for licensing information.

On top of that, some parts are fairly obvious. Anything made by any person or entity requires permission for commercial use.

Yeah, sorry, but their are basic laws regarding public use items. Its not up to us to publish that, besides that most people who upload dont even consider he oinds of licensing they have available to them. Its fairly certain that any graphics from rm2k3 or graphics using odds and bits of rm2k3 graphics are illegak to use for commercial purposes outside of commercial use ofthe rm programs.

Meaning, you can use rtp graphics in commercial products, but you must either own the program they were intended for or purchase a commercial license for the package of rtp graphics. Either way, they can only be used for commercial purposes with one of the rpgmakers of the series.
