Anyone looking for a PHP Job?
« on: February 11, 2014, 04:43:41 PM »
Hello everyone,

Some (several!) years passed since some of us were here, so some of us is really no more a kid at all.
And so I'm here looking if there may be anyone interested in a job.

I am in need of finding a kinda-part-time PHP developer, but with some specific skills.
And i was guessing if there may be anyone interested in such a thing here in Charas, or perhaps someone you know.
I'd just prefer this instead of going through regular freelancers sites, as in there you can really never undertstand fully who you will have to deal with.

There will be a number of stuffs involved, but in a nutshell:
1) I'm looking for someone that will have to work directly with me
2) We will mainly be in the Online Design, e-commerce and integrations fields.
3) I don't need someone supergood in someting specific. I need a fresh mind, open to study and learn new things continuously
4) I need someone with PASSION on coding. You would not be working "for" me, but "with" me
5) creativity is needed as well. Coding skills means nothing if you can't imagine a solution
6) required skills at a good level are: PHP (especially cURL), SQL, HTML, Javascript, CSS
7) good responsiveness required. Don't ever have me pinging you for updates. To me that often sounds like "I'm not caring enough about the project"

The kind of job: I will need to assign you projects I don't have time to follow completely by myself only.
This means that sometimes you may have a lot of work, but sometimes there may be nothing to do as well.
For this, no matter what, my idea is to propose a flat salary. You will be free to keep doing your own stuffs as well, I don't need you to "live" for this only.
However, I will need you to be pretty responsive whenver you'll be called to the army.
As long as you will be there when needed, you can arrange your schedules anyway you prefer.

Considering this method will leave you your time to follow other projects as well, the expected available money for this will be in the range of $150/week for one or two months.
This because I first need to evaluate how you are doing. In the first period I will be with you fully, to be sure you're... doing good :)
After that "trial period" (and assuming you survived) a new rate will be arranged.

I don't want to bother you too much for now. Extra details if anyone can be seriously interested.

Thanks for reading!

Literally no one replied? I'd help you Alex if I wasn't running two jobs as it is, but I thought there would be someone on this forum who'd want to.

I would have loved to help if I was still in college, but my current job keeps me pretty busy. Plus since I work at a company that creates websites and small business software, there would potentially be a lot of 'conflict of interest' issues that come up.

On a side note, I really dislike PHP backends. Recently I've been digging Java or Node.js. Otherwise for all of the smaller projects that I've been working on, there's this great (usually free) service called Parse, that handles the whole backend for you. It has capabilities to create and account, log in, log in  through facebook, recover passwords, and then of course store and retrieve information securely with encrypted user IDs. The best part is all of this is done through ajax calls, so no backend is required. It works great for things like blogs, forums, or general sites, but it really wouldn't work well for more complex things like online shopping sites.

Hell Yeah! Just recovered all my old rm2k/3 games from my 10 year old, broken laptop hard drive that had been formatted and had a new OS installed on it. Oh, and I did all of this from my phone. WIN

Well,

I'm not fully surprised of the lack of replies. There may not be too many users around, and a lot of them already have a job they can't surely leave.
I'm still "hunting" though, so leaving this post here is just fine for me :)

For the records: as of now, I've already "scared away" 2 candidates. Waiting for the 3rd one to give some updates, but I have a feeling that even this one will not be "the one".
It's a hard life!!!

Same as Archem, I would love to help, but lack the appropriate knowledge.
I could have replied so just you'd know we're not just ignoring you, but felt it would be pointless. Don't take this as a "I read, I don't care".

While it would be great to have someone from here do this, I feel having a new figure wouldn't be a bad thing either.

Not sure what scared those people away, but let us hope that someone will have the courage to get where others couldn't.

I could ask some of my friends who know that stuff, although I'm not sure they'd be able to spare the time for the money. I'll see....

Just to make it clear: the "I'm not caring enough about the project" part was only about the project. I wasn't expecting too many replies, as I know a lot of you are already busy. So no problem.
Also, I do know that moneywise this sounds not too attractive, but I have to do that at least in the beginning. Of course that is meant to grow in time.

Reason is pretty obvious: in the long run, my idea is to "grow" this developer. I would have to spend a lot of time with him, so before even thinking at that, I need to be sure he is the right one. As simple as that.

For example, for the project I have assigned to the ones I've already "scared away", the deal was simple: $150 for that project only, 2 weeks max to complete the task (one to impress me).
Obviously 2 weeks do not worth $150 only, but that project is meant to be THE TEST. In other terms, being able to complete would mean him to have enough brain to be considered :P

I have to say that such project could really be completed in a couple days, but I'm taking into account that the candidate will not know anything about the involved systems. And actually, that's really part of the test itself: seeing how he's facing new stuffs he never saw before.

The main thing that killed them all so far is my request for DAILY updates during the test period.
That is needed for me to see how he's approaching the entire thing.
Well... all of them, so far, made the supermistake of disappearing for 3 days. And when pinged by me, all they said was "too difficult for me"... duh!

There's a lot of huge red flags here as far as a job goes, Alex, so it's not surprising you're having trouble getting qualified candidates. Still, good luck with the hunt.
