Ever Consider a Patreon Account?
« on: July 13, 2014, 03:32:10 AM »
It was over five years ago that I posited that the internet was moving toward a patronage system, which is to say a minority of users supporting the creation of content that the majority of users enjoy free.  Kingdom of Loathing was already doing it years ago, but now, seeing a site like Patreon come alive just confirms my theory.  Lately I've been thrilled to see a variety of content that I regularly enjoy (such as webcomics and Minecraft mods) take up Patreon accounts, some of which quickly popped up to over $1000/month.

So, has Charas Project ever considered getting a Patreon account?  It's a way to let members who want to support the site donate money on a regular basis, even a small amount of money (I'm currently donating $2.78/month to Pam's HarvestCraft, and her numbers indicate that the average donation isn't that far from mine... but they add up to over $100/month).  It also allows the site to set goals based on getting up to certain numbers, similar to Kickstarter: "If we hit $100/month we'll do XYZ, if we hit $250/month we'll do JKL, $500/month means a new site design, and if we hit $1200/month I can quit my job and work the site full time to clean up a lot of old stuff that needs sorting," etc.

I don't know what the current state of affairs are on this site as far as finances (I don't drop by much anymore, though I'm always pleased to find it still up and running when I do), but a Patreon account is certainly something to consider.

I have a website now! Currently just points at my fanfics (over 230 works, totaling over 750,000 words, mostly in Marvel and Person of Interest and now Lackadaisy too). YouTube channel on hiatus but I hope to eventually recreate "A Fugitive in Stardew Valley" now that I know how to mod the game.

That's not the worst idea in the world, though I'm not sure how much it would add up to, considering the relatively small active user base. I have no doubt that there's plenty of other traffic running through here, but how many people visit frequently enough to bother making a donation?

Negative as my comment might sound, I'm in no way trying to talk anyone out of the idea.
