A lot of good tips here, but I guess you fought them with a 1.2 character and didn't start new in 1.3 because there's a lot of items you mention that you don't have access to when first fighting the mechanicals. Black belt and spectre armor requires a hardmode dungeon drop, teleporters need the Steampunker so that's at least one mech boss kill... not sure what armor you're using that gives more minions but Tiki is post-Plantera and the other ones have horribly low defense.

I did get the Destroyer. Think I just needed to tech up my armor to Adamant. Also having four heart statues spitting out hearts at regular intervals helped too. Pretty sure I can get the other two mechs with this setup, especially now that I have access to hallowed.

No I did it with a 1.3 actually. Yes the teleporters are once you defeat one of them, that one was the destroyer for me. Since you really don't need teleporters for it. I

Regarding other items, you are correct. The black belt/nija gear as well as the spectre set is only available after plantera. But they make everything so much easier, that's why I mentioned them when I explained the clouds and the cross necklace: I kinda missed them. I used the admantite armor, with the melee helm just to get the extra 12 or so defense. Survivability first. The nimbus rod is a drop from the angry nimbus that spawn during rain in a hardmode world. The crimson rod is a reward for breaking drimson hearts, like the shadow orbs. The spider staff and the spider queen rod can be made by defeating black recluse in the spider caves.

Regarding minions. The bewitching table is like the magical crystal or the sharpening stone, it increases your max minions by 1. So you can just place it, click it and then storage it again. Anyway that allows you to summon a normal minion twice, a turret minion like the spider queen and the ice hydra don't count among those 2 for some reason. I don't know if there are any other "turrets" like them. They are the only two I know of at least.

So to summarize what I had. Adamantite armor set with melee helm. Instead of the Ninja gear I used the worm scarf (expert eater of world drop) that I got from a different world. It decreases all damage taken. I didn't find a star cloak so I had a normal cross necklace. I had normal angel wings, an alchemist stone+ life band combo, obsidian shield and lastly a magic symbol. All of them with 3+ defense bonus except the wings with 4% damage. So in total I had like 66-68 or so defense. plus 8 from the ironskin and 2 from well fed, So I was around 75 defense in total. I only had 2 heart statues but heaved honey from the underground to compensate.

So I clicked my magic crystal and my bewitching table, used the spider queen turret nearby, turned on my dart trap wall gauntlet, activated heart statues, summoned my spiders with my spider staff twice(I usually prefer the imp but it's not useful for the mechanical bosses). Next I chewed my cooked fish and the ironskin potion, flew high into the air and placed my two nimbus clouds right above me , the just rain on everything below them. Last thing to do was to summon the actual boss. It took a couple of minutes but I emerged victorious. Edit: Forgot to mention that I used the poison staff for personal damage besides the minions, clouds and darts.

Truth to be told, the biggest change I did with my setup was to craft the optic staff to get the twins minion instead of the spiders and buy teleporters . The other two are made pretty easy with the teleporters, it's a bit cheap but I had to win.
BTW, found another useful potion, endurance potion, you never find them but they can be crafted and decrease all damage taken by 10% or so. You need blinkroots and some sort of fish to make it. Also, Plantera was a huge pain in the ***.

Edit: I made the spectre set again but I'm disappointed to be honest. I'm such a glass cannon with that thing on now that everything does more damage in expert... Life changing realization. I might just go for the turtle armour instead. I will do terrible magic damage but at least I'll survive.

Plantera was a close call after several attempts and a race course built. But the golem was impossible. I had to break the rules and fetch a third heart statue from a different world and drink pretty much every possible potion there is.
So my character must make a dentist appointment 'cuz he chugged: summoner potion, magic damage potion, 10%+ damage potion, endurance potion, ironskin potion, thorns potion, regeneration potion, max health potion and heart collection range potion. And fish of course. I even moved my dryad into the friggin temple so she could spam her worthless leaf shield on me.

I spent hours finding all the pieces for the ninja gear and even considered endangering ice turtles to get that impossible drop. I used the ninja gear instead of the wings and dashed back and forth to avoid some more damage. I also kept using the turtle armour, no point in doing damage when that thing hits you for 140 with lasers. Luckily there were some spikeball traps nearby so I activated the golem and ran like hell to the wall I built and then activated the traps, they didn't do much but they did some. 3 twins helped me out as well as my nimbius clouds and the spder queen. I think it took me 3-4 attemps before I actually beat it. And the reward was kinda lame, but who knows? maybe it will come in handy. Also, the treasure bag contained Crowno's armour and wings. I didn't know that developer items were available now.

My friends and I have been mucking around with a 1.3 expert Terraria multiplayer server, starting over, and holy crap. Multiple players + expert mode = some really freaking hard fights. I was not prepared for 12,000 HP Eye. I also have to do more with less since we're splitting resources among 6 or 7 people. My main weapon so far has been a goddamn Snowball Cannon, which I wrote off as a gimmick in single player but am finding super useful in multi because of its range, knockback, and effectively infinite free ammo.

Also loving that Eye shield bash, even if its totally a gimmick.

This game is slowly taking over my life.

I found that the painter's paintball gun is really great for early game, it uses no ammo and has pretty good speed and decent damage. All you have to do is to lure the painter into enough enemies to kill him.
Besides that, the water bolt from the dungeon does wonders if you build some tight corridors early on.

Haven't tried expert mode with other people, although I think I have to get some help to take down fishronson. The new "enrage when outside the ocean biome is killing me. And I hate farming truffle worms.

Eye of chtulu drops a pretty neat item, so does the eater of world, the brain's item is pretty useless outside pvp and skeletrons is a joke. wall of flesh is really useful (since it's consumable), the mechanical bosses only drop minecart parts, plantera drops an accessory that spawns spores where you stand and the golem gives you an item that increases hp regen while standing still. Unsure what fishron will give but I really hope it's worth it 'cuz this is getting really annoyng.

Why not just fight in the ocean then?

Also killing NPCs for profit is wrong, bro :p

Alsoso I think I like the brain's better than the eye's. I mean yeah the bum rush is cool but auto-confusing attackers is great when being swarmed since confused enemies stop swarming.

Papa needs space to avoid damage and that pig-fish-dragon sure deals damage on expert.

And it's only wrong if the other NPCs are around to watch.

So defeating the cultist on expert is way easier than defeating mr.fish apparently. Still haven't succeeded with it. Oh and also, the end times event is brutal. I didn't last long.

Also, I was probed and attacked by the martians. Tips, build some roof and you can take down the boss pretty easily. It's kinda like the new pirate boss that you can get stuck if you stand on a ledge where it just gets obstructed by the blocks and you can take it down. The UFO minions are really good. I got the deadly spheres from the solar eclipse but those were a waste of time, it's purely melee and gets stuck everywhere. It's also pretty slow. But you get a drill from the event that has 10+ range, but it's slightly slower than the picksaw so that was a turn off.

Also, after killing 18 king slime (and his 1000 or so blue slime buddies) I finally got the frozen key mold and could unlock the hydra staff.

Cultist is fun. It feels like a weird PVP battle.

I got me a stardust dragon and a daybreak spear from the lunar pillars, but I'm not up for the moon lord alone. Also yes trying to beat those pillars was a frickin slog.

I don't understand skeletron's expert item. Its a slow, weak, nonhoming skull?

Cultist is fun but sometimes you interrupt his little ritual and sometimes you are fucked. I'm still not sure what decides if it gets interrupted or not.

I also got me a stardust dragon, bye bye UFOs, I'll never need another summon. I like how the dragon gets longer when summoned again instead of getting 2. I barely defeated both hands on the moon lord before I was ultimately killed. not surprising when all my potion buffs wore off but still. The nimbus rod did wonders on the star towers though, Apparently they stay their duration even if I die. I had the solar tower down on like 50% when I summoned everything before dying. As I was making my way back I got the message that it was defeated. I quickly summarized some strategies for the different towers though.

Solar tower - find a ledge, few of the enemies can reach you. And don't jump or you'll be worm food.
Stardust tower - AoE, the spectre's damage helm did wonders here.
Vortex - surround yourself with blocks, everything shoots and few of the enemies can shoot through things.
Nimbus - no clue, I got lasered, orbed and darked 24/7.

No I don't get skeletrons expert item either. "Yay, let's do throw damage! your thrown bones will do slightly more damage!"

I managed to defeat the martian invasion another 3 times and got the UFO mount. It feels like cheating though, infinite flying. I raced a wyvern in the sky, felt weird. I'm not fond of the anti gravity hook though, I just don't get the point. Also, this type of protection makes you immune to all attacks the saucer throw at you.

Also, I got the Medusa head, gonna hang it on the wall.

Yeah I fought some martians too and noticed that the beam doesn't pass through blocks. Moon Lord's was the same way. I wonder if I can build a little bunker, drink fruity beverages, and let my space dragon just slowly beat them down? Tedius but effective perhaps.

Are you using spectre armor? I'm a panzy and kept turtle cuz mah defense, but I wish I could use more offensively based melee or magic armors.

What attacks can be blocked by blocks? I was honestly to stressed out to pay attention to it with all those shiny projectiles flying around and dealing tons of damage.

I'm switching between spectre with damage and beetle with defense most of the time. It's practical to have the defense thing in the beetle armour, avoid damage for some seconds and you get a damage reduction buff. For the saucers I've started using the spectre to take it down faster. But if I screw up and get hit by the second form's deathray I take around 300dmg or so. Most of the time I just chicken out and use the beetle. There's really no point in going for summoner armor. Yes sure, I could add another 5 segments to my dragon but I'd be down on half defense. Even a slime would kill me.

I managed to get another item for my arsenal now: The rainbow gun, much like the Nimbus clouds all you have to do is aim and fire and then leave it alone. It's really effective for the tower battles. Aim slightly up and you create a wall of damage with knockback that everything has to pass through. Mix this with nimbus clouds where enemes are currently, some magnet spheres and then the frozen hydra and Spider queen.

I wish I could say that it makes the towers easy but that would be stretching it. I have however devised a pretty successful strategy against them: Build a T shaped structure and stand on top of it. The solar and vortex enemes really can't reach you and the T shape makes them stuck on each side. You're pretty safe until they open that portal above you to drop hornets on your face. For the Nebula, I noticed that building a U shaped hole to sit in was useful. The brain suckers can't get in and neither can those dogs or the laser men. The only problem is the nebular beholders, they will teleport and attack from above. Luckily they will teleport away when damaged.  Still need some sort of plan for the Stardust pillar though, there are the stupid spacesquids that explode on death, the star cells that keeps multiplying, the weird crabs and the worms. Best thing I did was raise a roof...

Still no progress with neither Moon lord of duke fishron though.

The main mouth attack can be blocked by blocks. The slow, high damage death ray thing.

Took out the Moon Lord. I'm not on expert though so it's kind of chumpy compared to what you're doing, but I feel pretty good about it. Getting that UFO mount was really a turning point in my ability to fight the towers and the Moon Lord himself. Only beat him once and didn't get what I wanted from him - got the staff that summons a stationary attack turret laser thing. But I feel acomplished. Portal gun is hella cool too - I can see that being loads of laughs in multiplayer.

So you didn't turtle up and decided to fly around instead? I can see that working, but it'll be kinda problematic for me since I rely a bit too much on my turrets and other things that deals damage over time. Care to post what you were wearing at the time?

Also, I hope I get the summons when I defeat it, gonna suck if I have to do it all over again. Each attempt is kinda frustrating since I pop so many potions for the fight and need to fill up my storage afterwards if I fail. And well, the fact that I need to defeat the lunar cultist and the towers before the moon lord appears.
