Title: Crystal Crazy - Version 1.1 Demo - News on 1.2 09/09/08

Designer Notes and News - 09/09/08

Andriayle can no longer fall off the ledge on her own.  This will also make it where monsters can't run over water or thin air as well.  Andriayle can still get monsters stuck
if they fall off though through her blast line of spells "which is tactics" and very much intended to do if you can manage to stick a creature on something.   She can only lose hearts now by a monster forcing her in a danger area of the map.   This will make the game much easier for people struggling and accidentally falling off which can be
very frustrating since a monster is almost always on you if you're low on mana or don't have blast loaded up.

Players will enjoy these changes a lot and it makes crystal crazy slightly easier but it's still a challenge with new monsters and powers they have to knock you for a loop.


NEW ZONES COMING IN 1.2

Four new zones have been made and they are the following.

EAGLEVIEW VILLAGE - You can buy the new Shield and Remedy spells here as well as get a one time quest zone that gives a nice reward if you help the town.

EAGLEVIEW MINE -  This is the quest zone of Eagleview and contains rat packs and rock monsters which is a tricky combo to go against.   I will let players figure it out :)

ROGUE RETREAT  -  This is a new zone that contains hooded thieves who vanish and appear before you but also have a slight chance when they hit you to do a cheap
                              attack that knocks you for a loop.

STONECRUSH FALLS  -  Bugbears and a terrible Ogre has taken residence in this area.   You have to watch out for their strong attacks which will send you flying hard.
                                   They also have a stunning blow chance if you get really unlucky which will stop you dead in your tracks and lined up for a fairy punt.


BARRIERS AND CRYSTALS

A new system will be added into 1.2 that features "barriers" which stop you from going further on the map until you activate the color coded crystal that drops that
barrier.  Crystals that are color coded are protected by tower bosses which is a 10 level battle zone with the 11th room being a powerful boss.

What is Crystal Crazy?

Crystal Crazy is a very unique adventure/rpg game that feels like a mixture of Pac-Man, Super Mario World and Zelda rolled into one game.  The name "Crystal Crazy" comes from the insane amount of stolen crystals you have to reclaim. 


The Storyline

The world of Riyn'Vale (Ree-In-Vale) was never the same...

Andriayle (And-Dree-Ale) is the main character and is a fairy from the fey village called "Everglade".
Everglade is known to harness many magics of the world through it's large collection of magical crystals.
The crystals are created by the magic essence of the fairy people, and only they have the power to control or
sense where they are from anywhere in the world.

One day, the chief of the village asked Andriayle nicely to retrieve some supplies for a new batch of crystals that were being planned out.
Andriayle quickly packed her things and left the village of Everglade. Traveling far away from Everglade, Andriayle was successful in
finding the much needed components for the new batch of crystals. 

As Andriayle headed home and got near the gates to the village, she quickly realized that the town had been set on fire and many villagers
were slain and captured.  Feeling the crystals resonate in her mind she quickly gathers what she can out of the destroyed village and heads out
to reclaim the crystals and save her people.

Cool dude, tell me what you think.  I came up with this screwing off pretty much..   I must say I have been pretty addicted to it though.   If people really like it I'll complete the world and add a ton of stages and things.

lol changed it up a bit, yeah, it's addicting and fun.. the 2nd boss is tough.    A tip for anybody who plays, getting hit can be a good thing if you position yourself right.

How exactly does the "combat" work. Link style walk around and Swing, or is a combat started.

From what I've gathered, you just avoid the enemies and collect the crystals. No "combat" really.

The game looks fun, I'll try it out.

Has anybody beat the 2 stages?   I know the 2nd boss is a bitch lol.   I plan on doing a polish on the game from feedback and things.   


TIP:  To beat the 2nd boss you need to stand where his main attack will direct you to a crystal..  You have to time and judge it carefully but he is beatable once you learn his tricks.

NEWS August 16th - 2008

Kobolds on the 4th stage of Grassy Field battle zone were not getting fully hit by the star after a crystal was taken.  This has been fixed.

Goblins in the Goblin Plains battle zone are being nerfed a bit.   They were stunning way to often which made some areas extremely hard for it being the 2nd stage.

Removed a couple items that were making the paths in the goblin area way to hard to navigate at this stage of the game. 

Storm Valley screen shot up.   This is stage 3 which is not in this demo.

UPDATE:

The Storm Valley has been completed, took me all day to work bugs and get the zone perfected.   I will be working on the Creepy Forest next.

Added a lot more detail to previous zones.  Things look a lot better now.

POSSIBLE ADD-ON:   

I've been thinking if the game needs anymore that your fairy can do without breaking it.   If you have any ideas don't be afraid to post it.

UPDATE: 

Added a line of code that prevents enemies from attacking the player multiple times.  After you're struck the enemy will pause giving you enough time to move again.

Just downloaded it, and I'm going to start playing it now. Expect my thoughts soon :)

The kobolds have a natural stand around and be stupid in their AI lol.   Combined with the crystals power it can make them look like their not moving at all.  If you give it time they will resume movement.  I made them act stupid because it's the first stage and I did not want to make this part of the game hard.


I'll take a look at the monster spawning in a tree O.o

EDIT FROM ABOVE:

Good eye on the kobold in a tree on stage 4 of Grassy Field.  I found the problem and it will be fixed.

Edit: Ok dude, very fun. That was awesome. Stage 3 with the Harpies gets tough. The second level, i think it is, is just Mean. There are 2 crystals down one way paths. You basically are forced to sacrifice a life to get it. I only got to the last boss in Stage 3 once, and it took about 8 tries. I was soo close to being him too, till his Whirlwind **** instant killed me right after a respawn.

One thing that is kinda annoying (harpy level mostly) I respawned with both Hapries on me, and they chain killed me for all my lives, with nothing i could do about it.

But short of that, i like it :D   Its definately challenging, and one thing im sure sick of these days are Easy challengless games. So this was a refreshing breathe of fun.

Awesome dude, remember that getting hit by some monsters can be a good thing.  Once you get the hang of it the stages so far are cake.    The zones I have planned will make things much more difficult mwahahahaha!


I'm glad you enjoyed it dude.  I was not really planning on this type of game but I am kinda hooked on it now lol.   I will get a lot of stages made up and release a nice big version to bust your brain too.

Thanks for the feedback I hope others tried it as well.  :)

Exactly, some enemies have pushback that you can use to your advantage.  Most pushbacks will push the fairy backwards so if you face a certain way to be pushed that way on purpose you can get things you would usually have a hard time with.  That's one of the tricks of Crystal Crazy :)    In the up-coming zones I have planned monsters will have even dirtier tricks up their sleeves and their will be traps in some areas of the stages like pitfalls etc.   It will just get harder and more fun >,<

Yeah, I was considering maybe giving the player some options but I honestly don't know if that would make the game to easy or not.   I was even considering where she can visit some towns and buy things with money she makes..  "Possibly letting players farm zones" I don't know. 
There is only so much I can do with the game without breaking it.

I got some stuff planned and going to be in testing really soon.   I'll see what I can come up with.  I'm working on a storyline as well.  I just want the game to keep it's puzzle/adventure feel but gain some RPG elements. 

I will release some info when I get some things tested.

BUG FIXES - The crystals on the ogre boss stage will now push him back one space.
                   The crystals on the goblin chief boss stage will now push him back one space.
                   The crystals on the storm feather boss stage will now briefly stun him.
                   The crystal animation of wind damage is now appropriately targeting the goblin chief boss.

New Storyline up.   I'm doing my best to get Crystal Crazy some new features that won't drastically hurt the current game.   



FEATURE IDEAS:

Create a game that lets you farm money by completing the maps over and over like diablo.

Use the money to buy things to help Andriayle on her mission.

The items/skills that can help Andriayle must be simple things that can fit into a simple adventure game with the same level platform.

Adding very small towns to buy things and quest?

Items/Skills can be hot keyed to 1 through 4 on keyboard.

Adding a blue heart bar on the right side which represents mana.

More to come.

I dont know if this is a big issue or not, but i think there should be a small delay between stage changes. Until i got used to it happening really fast, i wasnt ready at all. Although after playing for a bit i got used to it, and i knew that when i start a level i would have to keep at it until i win or died.

So again not really a big issue.

I still think my flight idea would be sweet, although i dunno how to code such a thing. Being able to activate Flight every like 30 seconds to allow the fairy to fly over the "Dead zone" for like 4-5 seconds can really open up some interesting game play in later levels. but again... its all theory crafting at this point.

I dont know if this is a big issue or not, but i think there should be a small delay between stage changes. Until i got used to it happening really fast, i wasnt ready at all. Although after playing for a bit i got used to it, and i knew that when i start a level i would have to keep at it until i win or died.

In the original game I had a fade to black thing going on but I took it out because it seemed way to slow.   I will probably have a flashy picture say "STAGE CLEAR" or something like that so you know..    However, I want to keep the speed because if you played with pauses now that you're used to it, it would seem slow and draggy.

By the way, are you going to switch to different chipsets/charsets once it's done? Or are you going to stick with RTP? I think a custom graphics job would do wonders for this game.

As of right now, I have no plans of using anything but besides what I have..   If the game really needs a major polish in graphics I might change some things.  So far, the RTP is working fine mixed with my own things.

UPDATE
The gold system is finished and goes up to 9999 gold.  I doubt somebody will get that much gold or even need it but that's the max.

I kind of figured it was a pond.  I had the water there before unpassable and it was a suicide nightmare for the fairy lol.   I will probably just remove the water *shrug*

The first stages music has been changed to something less happy.

The User Interface is under construction and is looking pretty good so far.   The only thing wrong with it from testing is a minor slow response time when you press the keys.   The 1.1 Demo is going to be like a whole new game when launched.   I will have most of it done within a couple weeks.

I'm going to increase the amount of money you get as I do testing.  Right now the chests are not dropping enough money but that will change before the 1.1 launch.

Okay, you have 2 major ways to obtain items and spells in Crystal Crazy.   

#1 You can farm zones you defeated for money drops and buy them from merchants in towns.
#2 You can do side-quests in towns to earn items and money.

Gold will pick up later in the game by dropping more than 1 at a time in chests.

The heart and mana potion are very powerful and will require a little farming to pick up when you need them.


Your mana bar never goes empty it always fills up 1 heart every 10 seconds so you will always have mana to play with..  However, the game limits spells being flung over and over with the slow mana regen rate for major balance issues.  More on spells will be shown later.   Also, when you learn a spell it's "learned" and sticks with you forever.   Once Andriayle has all 15 of her spells the only thing to use money on is heart and mana potions pretty much.

Sounds good Drakiyth, i really enjoyed the game so far, now it sounds like its getting some BEEF.

Cant wait.

Edit: although i understand the use of farming zones for money now, but late game i think its not the best idea.

There just needs to be a zillion levels. Commander Keen style lol.

I would need to see how it plays out before i can fully judge. So lets all ignore my Edit and think about the wonderful days of Commander Keen.

SMALL UPDATE - 09/01/2008


Prices of items are getting re-looked at and the gold system is 100% fixed to store any number on the counter.

Spells will now be "chosen" and than you will see the spell icon on a new part of the UI I added right above ITEM/SPELL/EXIT.   The chosen spell can be cast with the Z key.

Fixed several bugs that were causing the fairy to phase out.

NPC's in the first town will now give information and tips for playing the game.   

Added a spell graphic after you fall off and a game pause to monsters so you can tell where you are on the map.  This will give players some breathing room after losing life.

Magical Orbs and Mana Potions are working and a little icon + spell graphic is shown to tell you that you have it on you.

Added spell graphics for most items so you know it's affecting you.

Blast doesn't seem to be practical in that movie. In most occurances, a person would use blast when they actually need enemies knocked back, a time when they are about to be hit off or something. The way you've got it is there is a 1-3 second pause showing the animation before the actual blast takes effect. I would consider either making the animation shorter, or stopping the movement of everything on the screen (including hero) while the animation goes, then allowing the hero to move while the knockback occurs.

Much better game trailer is up now.   It's slightly off on the sound about 1 second but much better than the nightmare it used to be.

The sounds are off because I recorded a flektor video and threw it on youtube.
