Title: New battlers (Male template done)
Post by: Prpl_Mage on April 17, 2009, 01:15:33 AM
Some of you might remember the animated thugs I had in my sig some time back(before the inventory trend).
Anyway. I made them to be larger and more human than char-sized battlers and yet keep the same look.
Let's face it: the RTP battlers look quite awful, they are overly cheerful and pretty stale.

So yeah, latest version makes it's way closer to humanoid and less like the sprite sized. It's something inbetween. It's not sprite sized and it's not as stupid as the RTP.

Row1: Template 1, template2, Marduk(Prpl_Mage), Fisherson, Rusty, Lucas_irineu, Pleasent, Appleman(redfox), Cerebus, coreystranick x3, hobomaster, Jet, Red Giant, RockAxeJohn, Zuhane, Dragonium, Chickenman(Ed), Razor, Skylar(linkforce).
Row2: Template 1, template 2, Viola(female prpl_mage), Sarah C, Sarah C(2nd costume) Valiere, Valiere(less original outfit), Sai Kar.
Row3: Template 1, Fruckert.
Row4: Big berserk guy, giant archer, pikachu, efreet, lord ifrias, hexer, tentacle freak, Corey's soldier, Zylac.

Just finished two characters with my "template*" and tried to make some enemies to match.
*: It's a template in the fashion that there is only one frame of one pose so far.

So yeah. Just showing off a little here. Will update when I make progress.
You can request a sprite if you want to. I'm still experimenting so.

EDIT:
Well what did you know? I actually finished the male template at last.
The idle poses, defend poses and some other poses are a bit dull I agree. But those are the poses that are affected if the character is standing with his weapon or not. Anyway. Also, the attacking animations are awful at the moment. But I wanted to get this done now.
I put them into Battlechar templates now. I will probably make one as battle animations as well later on. But I'd like to finish of the female template and the small one.

You never cease to amaze me! A bit off topic, but did you create that inventory menu
in your sig aswell? I need a good-looking menu for a game we're working on :D

You want a Fish done or something? I'm kinda planning on making the charas members so I might as well start with you.

No at this moment. Still trying to get comfortable with the style. I'm a slow adapter and need to remember the posture to get it further. So just singel sprites at the moment.
But my intention is to make a full battlechar template of course. But it needs some more time and inspiration.

nice, i love the archer, even if his bow is technically to big :D

Yeah, he was larger at first. But in the end ended up like 1.5 the size of the battlers. And I wasn't planning on having giant archers in the game so I just decapitated those legs and body. Didn't want to ruin the bow.

You never cease to amaze me! A bit off topic, but did you create that inventory menu
in your sig aswell? I need a good-looking menu for a game we're working on :D

Nah, the inventory is a lined up Fire emblem 8(gba) inventory with some changes. Like colour, some positions, text and so on.  For example, there is no magic tab in the game. It was just a page for weapon skills(D->S) before and the character relations(bonds gives buffs).

Already did one, but you can make a better one, maybe with a driffrent outfit (You seem to have a knack for them).

Oh you did one already.

I used the hair from your sig and the colours from that JUS sprite in your gallery.
And I did Rusty, although I'm not sure the pose is fit for battle.

I like them. I'd like to have the amount of skills some of you have (You, Valiere, gemini, etc.)
And the patience too.

Now... I have to ask... I can't resist... mind... making Cerebus? No need of a BattleCharset though, just one pose would be great.
I love seeing other people making something of him.
Title: Re: New battlers (again)
Post by: Prpl_Mage on April 17, 2009, 03:30:57 PM
Cerebus or Sarah C, or both?

Just post me a charset(great for making accurate heads) and a picture or something so I can get it as close to the real thing as possible.
Title: Re: New battlers (again)
Post by: Cerebus on April 17, 2009, 04:02:26 PM
Uhm... it's true that there is not enough Sarah C. If you don't mind making both, that would be great, but the one I'd like more is Cerebus.

However, due to lack of talent and patience, the only good Cerebus I have his this.
It's made using an RTP BattleCharset, which is why he have a big head and such. Cerebus's proportions are the same as any human.

Just some clarifications; his ears are not from the mask, he's covered with fur (you could say he's an anthropomorphic wolf-like).
He is not fat (in case it seems so on the edit)
His red shoulder pads are actually a red compacted cloak, which means they join each others from his back.
He has a golden chain with a bronze medallion to keep his cloak compacted (on the front (no it's not a necklace))
He has a black belt with a golden buckle.
He has no gloves! His hands are grey because of the fur!
However, he does have grey boots
Under his jacket is a dark blue shirt

If you'd still prefer another drawing of him, I could do an ugly but understandable one.

Also, you don't need to make it anytime soon, there is no rush.

And last, thanks in advance!

Again, I am sure its not the best shading I ever done. Maybe the best shading you ever seen me do. I dont post all my stuff on charas.

Then PM some of it. Your art has cool feel to it and I love to see. Especially Pleasent. *Huggles* He's like a little green Rusty that can kick my *** XD

Cerebus and Sarah C is first on the list. But you're next.
Beard, top-hat, muscular arms, revolvers and... wings was it?

I love it! Is that Val in a Bikini?? O_o

Actually no. It's just a more cathoholic version of the template. With clothing covering those parts. The face was chosen on random just like the red haired guy above.

I would do one for Val but I have no idea if she even got a character to make something out of.

Okay, updated first page again.
That mask is kinda tricky Cerebus, I'm not even sure I did it justice in the end.
Sarah C turned out as I wanted it to, I think I got he outfit right as well.
Valiere. Well I didn't have much to go on but I just did what Square did in KH. Add some belts and bracers and it's done.

Hobo is up next.
Anyone else?

Well I couldn't have people expecting the "bikini" template be you now could I?
Not sure how you wanted it.
I just remembered that you have rather long(shoulder length) blonde-ish hair.
And that's it actually.
Fish gave you some kind of black top with a red mark in his charset but I got "creative" and just made something up. No idea what you wear as person but... yeah.

Let me know if you want something else though. I will probably not do a lot of female battles anyway. We kinda like the fermones for that.

I don't really care for anything specific...what you did looks great to me, honestly. About to add it to my sig once I can get this blasted transparency working.

Although I'll get back to you with another chick request if it'll shake things up a bit.

(And for the record, I definitely don't dress like that.......)

Don't add wings. That was from my old design where my vision was clouded by terrible Jrpgs. This should work as a reference.

Also, muscular arms isnt that important, he is almost 70 after all.

Hehe, yeah I have hard time making his mask even on simple charset or such. It looks very good, don't worry.
It's also the first time I see Cerebus with his cloak "opened". And he looks good with it!
I like it, it's awesome.

About Sarah C's outfit, you got her first one right.
I changed it for the drawing I made, now she wears a blue tank-top and has a brown belt. But the first one I made had the same outfit as the one you made.
It looks very good.

I really like them!

Did the hobomaster. No biggie except the beard. Beards are hard.

And I did a Frucking dwarf as well. No idea how it should look like but it kicks some *** with a bandanna I suppose.

And I redid Sarah C and Valiere, adding more clothes and less skin.

And then tried at some new monsters again. An efreet and the great fire lord Ifrias Tesfire.

You gonna make a full-fledged template at any point, purp?

I'm intending to. Will probably be put on hold until next week or so though. Still need inspiration and such. For the stances and poses. Movements and all that crap.

So far I've figured out that the poses I would need:
Idle
Status
Buffed
Defend
Dead
Hurt
Run L
Run R

Victory
Item
Skill 1(melee)
Skill 2(ranged/spell)
Attack 1
Attack 2

I'm also planning to have 2 different sets for each gender(and dwarf). One for melee and one for ranged/magicians characters .

Dude, Prpl, these are sick. If only there was one of Jet. Ah well, what can ya do? *Shrugs*
My purple senses are picking up some kind of desire to be spritified. Post a pic or something and I'll do it.

Jet wasn't really hard. I think I need to start working on the actual poses now.

Added a witchdoctor as well.

NOTE:
The template will probably be done to fit a battle animations instead of a battlechar. They are used for the same purpose really but I wouldn't be able to fit much movement into the battlechar template.

I can't wait to see these finished. I'm using Gemini's for now, but I'm having a little trouble making poses productively. If these turn out well, I may use them instead.

I really like how you considered small characters. I don't think I can make Gemini's fit a smaller person.

I finished the male template.
Some poses are awful, but you'll probably change those to fit the character anyway.
The second sheet is pretty much just victory poses and different skill poses.

I also took the opportunity to make a Sai Kar and Razor while I was at it.

Well, I already have 2 Banners up. The FF1 one and the one about the flying island.
Would be a bit selfish to make even more of them wouldn't it? Like "Welcome to Charas, 1/2 of the banners here are made by the same person".

And I won't sprite so much today I think. The other templates will have to wait for now. But I want to finish them in time for the chaingame.

Regretfully, the banner contest ended before I joined.

The template is lookin' good, Prpl. Really impressed at the variety of poses. My only complaint is the skill-use/magic poses are devoid of flashy effects, but I guess you may've wanted to let the user figure those out for him/herself.

Yeah, people always want different colours and such on their magic effects. Soem want symbols/glyphs and some want the character to get all shiny.
I left them out for now at least. Will probably make yet another sheet for those things

Not that I don't like them, it's just that I wouldn't use them in a serious project. I'll probably use them for the Chain Game if everyone else is.

Hey Prpl, I remember attempting to make a template a little while back and eventually abandoning the project...I thought maybe you might want to use an effect from a magic pose I made when you make yours.

(Sorry, didn't save the arcane circle without the figure.) Up to you if you want to use it, just thought you might find it useful.

Guess I'll toss my hat in here with a default version of Bluhman on the Male Template.

EDIT: I'm never satisfied with anything I make the 1st time through. Whoo.

Look's nice. I love ho these come out looking just a little bit anime, but not overly cartoonish. Makes me think back to FF8. Man I miss that game.

dam purple... these are really amazing. although that bit from val's looks awesome too... if it ever got finished, although it doesn't look like colors RM2k can handle.

crap, and I was all proud of my sprites in my game....
if I were to use this template or something like it, do you think there would be room for full wings?
I have a certain cursed avian character in my game.

or just have a naked man running whenever he attacks... that would be a cool game.

Rpgm2k3 can handle these colours, it's barely more than a charset have.
Just make the battlechar in a clean file and save it with irfanview to decrease the colour depth to 256 though. Makes it limit it beside the colours used unlike MS paint.

And the template is done as a battlechar, but they can just as well be used as battleanimation-battlers.
A battlechar is 3 poses of 48x48 pixels.
A battleanimation-battler is 1-25 poses of 96x96.
So using battleanimations as battlechars allow you more space and smoothness.

If you mix and mactch using slightly bright colors instead of realistic ones you can make okay battlers.

yeag, that's true I don't know why I didn't think of that.
I'll have to work on the wings though anyways.
I don't like the three frames representing wings flapping, it just looks like she's floating while her wings move.
smoothness will definitely help

but uh,
what is irfanview?

I think I might still have iDraw, doesn't that do the same thing when you save to 256 colors?
Title: Re: New battlers (Male template done)

Idraw3 won't even open a file unless it's in 256 color mode.

Idraw3 don't take crap from nobody.

Irfanview is a simple free software.
I found it like 3 years back, still works for me.

It can change size, turn the pic, flip it, decrease the colour depth, greyscale, invert colours, enhance colours, oil/water paint effects and so on.
The basic, not as much as photoshop but it works for my needs.

I don't know how you could do that. It would kill my eyes.
Title: Re: New battlers (Male template done)
Post by: Prpl_Mage on May 06, 2009, 04:46:17 PM
I only use paint to make the stuff. Then I use irfanbview to reduce saturation and colour depth.

I'd like to see this Infranview. It's sounds pretty useful. Aslo I used to use a trick to Idraw to load stuff without it being 256 colors. I'd copy stuff in MS pain then paste it in Idraw. It works about half the time. I just wish paint had that good of a zoom tool.

That works, but Idraw3 will just approximate the colors on the object you pasted with the colors in the palette you have loaded. And sometimes it makes wonky decisions, like turning a brown into purple, just because the purple it has available is slightly more similar in tone than any of the browns available.

Oh yeah! Lol I forgoten about that since I use MS paint for just about everything, but recoloring. For that I use Game Maker's sprite editer.

Also, I like how you misspelled MS Paint as MS Pain.
Awesome.

that's a good nickname though.
when you stay up till 2 am working on there Pain's really a suiting name.

so, I'm going to go find Irfanview and the game maker sprite editor (if you can download it separately) I don't think it came with mine when I downloaded it so we'll see.
I think I'm really getting into spriting now. even if it's kind of useless, it's something where I don't have a set goal but it keeps me busy.

also, I've been working on a 'tales of..' style battle template
the female one is coming along quite nice. but the male might take a little longer, I never feel like I do male characters justice.

****, I think I just set a goal...

I hope you finish it so the darn n00bs can use it and stop distracting some of our good spriter by trying to make
them resize posses that can't be resized properly......Plus I love that style. i just hate the limited about of colors.. _sweat_

HAI PURPS U EVER FIX CMAN?

Fix, It needed fixing? Are you talking about the brown feather thing Lucas mentioned?
Or was it something else?

Oh, the right wing?
Well I didn't have any art to look on while I made it. Most of your threads or such including it have broken links or something.
I'll fix it though I guess.

Attached is a somewhat complete battle character, still gotta add some more regular spear poses, then gotta make, my piston driven spear poses(that sheet will be seperate)

But how do you like it so far? two death poses, and two victory poses, the one with the girl is sorta explained in my bio. Its the character's wife. (mainly my wife, she wanted to be in the game, but only wanted to show a little, so yeah.....)

On a different note. I'm using battle animations for attacks and such myself. I hate being cramped into that small space.

this style deserves a spot in the battlechar maker.

it puts those crappy RTP style chars to shame.

This is a really good template.  Do you think you could add a bit of movement into some of the stances? Alot of it is just the hands moving.  Doesn't matter though.
