They'll find a way to make it suck.
lol at the comments, too.
dude this is gonna change the world and help the recession because it will be so good and it will be the best because it will be very good
-
Yey! Trial and error is the best!
-
Hmmm... well, I'm not going to get my hopes up but it does look to be trying to be like retro Sonic.
-
Looks old-school. Maybe they're learning from Nintendo and NSMBW.
-
I think they'll succeed at doing a retro-style game.
However, they'll fail to make a good game in the process.
Don't you remember the Sonic 1 GBA port? I mean, even this game looks like it doesn't play that smoothly.
-
SEGA, are you going to redeem yourselves? Will Sonic finally be worth it again?
Hope so.
-
At least it's not mimicking Mega Man 9 by using the original sprite style. I may have a look one day, but then again, I'm the only person in the world who never felt like getting past Marble Zone on the first game.
-
Um, yeah...I didn't feel like it either...
I suck at Sonic...
Yeah, I have a feeling they may screw this up.
-
Well... if it manages to deliver the classic Sonic 1-3 feel, then I'm game.
-
Sorry, Sonic turns Robot-Zombie-Space-Vampire Sonic this time.
-
I just hope that, and I repeat, I JUST hope that they allow for Super Sonic to be playable.
And no, the GBA versions of SS were just a gradius minigame at the end of the game. I hope the get 50 coins + jump twice thing is back.
-
this is very "meh"
this is nothing to get excited about.
The only reason sonic gained popularity in the first place is because sonic team made good use of genesis' "blast processor" which at the time was fast as hell. And then the internet came and (being easy for 13 year olds to draw and make fanfic thereof) and for some reason it held a name in the annals of gaming history.
I was hoping to see some 3-d or something rendered in a way that would emulate the old 2-d. As far as gameplay though....Sonic was (aside from the speed and fatal risk to epileptics) very generic. And still is. Collect 100 rings for a 1-up. Get some power-ups. Smash some things and get stuff. Jump on enemies, but not the spikey ones.
At least the MM9 remake was hard. Sonic was always easy as a drunk 21 year old on roofinol in a nightclub
-
3D is actually pretty easy once you get the hang of it.
-
Homing attack. Motion controls. Ugh
-
Yeah I was very defending of this project til it's revealing today.
I gotta say it sucks as what I can see of it now. They should've done sprites instead of 3D if they wanted to go back to roots, and get rid off stupid homing attacks, and stick to either wii mote (side) and classic support.
The only thing I can hope up for is because of the bonus stage looks almost like the original sonic 1 and the music is actually quite enjoying. Otherwise this is looking like fail.
Sega, if you're not gonna do something good with Sonic; kill him off. While he has some dignity left.

They did. In a game that had the dignity to at least edit itself out of the canon because it was so bad. So bad that Sonic comes back to life later on and falls in love with a human and he keeps running into walls and... And... ****, it's terrible.
Sonic 2006.
They listened to my advice from Draikyth's thread. Can they carry through with a successful game? It does not look like it as of yet.
-
While he has some dignity left.
Waaaaaaay too late for that.

Go ahead and beat Sonic 2.Last stage, no rings, two bosses in a row, the last one has not only immortality frames as his only weak spots are a few pixels away from either spikes or fire, both kill you no matter what upon touch. Fiver hits to kill him, IIRC. I still cn't do it in this day and age.
-
Waaaaaaay too late for that.
I think he has one dignity left; that he hasn't died yet. As in completely.
-
Sonic's dead, Sega just practices necromancy/-philia.
-
Hah! Sonic...

Because imposing artificial challenge by yourself counts for good game design.

Quality of game design isn't what was under scrutiny; difficulty is what he was trying to show.

It hardly counts when you're doing self imposed challanges like no rings.

Ive beat 1, and 2. I didnt finish three because I lost interest. Landstalker and spinball distracted me. I did finish spinball too, which was harder then sonic 2's boss fight.
I was a kid when that noise came out. I remember your 'impossible boss fight'. I remember it taking me a sunday afternoon to finish the fight. hard, yes....but not anywhere close to my top 10 hardest.
And none of that changes that fact that sonic just ripped off other platformers, and made it faster to hid the suck.
-
So bad that Sonic comes back to life later on and falls in love with a human
I think people need a video to fully understand how awkward and uncomfortable this is.

Because you said it was easy. Not good designed.

Yeah... I hear you... they should have stuck to the classic moves of spindash and jumps and etc. No homing attacks and crap like that. And why 3D? Because they already have thousands of their stock models laying around so they can be lazy bastards about it. Fail indeed.
Edit: OH GOD! VAL! IT BURRNS!

It's not a self-imposed challenge. There are no rings on that stage.

Somebody sounds a little touchy about Sonic 2006! A fan of the big blue ball, aintcha?
-
yep
I actually enjoyed all of the Sonic games (except for Spinball on Game Gear and Sonic 2006)
I'm a bit over it now, but I'll probably buy this one.
-
I love how that trailer wants me to forget about 15 years of crappy sonic games.
1991. 1992. 1994. then someotherstuffmayhavehappenedANYWAY 2010.

15 years of crappy sonic games.
Jesus Christ, I never realized just how long we've been dealing with these monstrosities.

So true. XD It is like "Ummm... nothing to see there... *cough* then 2010 happened! The other years didn't exist! What? Those OTHER Sonic games? Screw you! YOU DON'T KNOW ANYTHING! WE ARE THE OWNERS AND MASTERS! YOU WANT THE TRUTH!? YOU CAN'T HANDLE THE TRUTH! And THEN 2010 happened! AND WE INCLUDED THE HOMING ATTACK! MWAHAHAHAHAHA!"
Okay, maybe a bit over-dramatic but you get the idea.

Every game rips off another game. You think Mario was the first platformer to not base itself on others?
There is no such thing as originality. All ideas are based on something else. The only thing that makes anything "original" is how one interprets the idea through their product. You seem to confuse this with copying.
The Sonic series started the way it did because, with the success of the Mario series, the formulas proved to work for making a successful game. What made sonic not as generic as Alex Kid, however, was that Sega added elements of fast-paced gameplay, a distinctive graphic style and music with the levels, multiple endings, etc. Sonic simply borrowed its game play elements the same way as every other game has. Even the first arcade game, Pong, is basically a computer-made clone of ping pong.
My point here is that the reason you have provided for saying that Sonic never deserved its popularity is really bad, considering the points above.
Anyway, I think SEGA's management has kind of gone down the shitter. I tend to notice that Sonic is not the only series that is failing, but a majority of their other franchises as well. I never played it, but I DOUBT NiGHTS on the Sega Saturn was as clunky, bland, and over all mediocre as the well-awaited sequel. Also, I'm hoping to get this game if they fix the damn running animation, to make it actually look like a running animation.
-
You sure?
-
I'm curious, what game did super mario bros rip off?
-
I'm curious, what game did super mario bros rip off?
Mario Brothers
-
I think it was pretty much original. A plumber who travels the world via pipes to save a Princess kidnapped by a turtle-dragon thing and his army of turtle and corrupted Mushrooms, and can use Flowers to throw fire ball, Mushroom to become taller and Stars to be invincible for some time.
-
I think people need a video to fully understand how awkward and uncomfortable this is.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uuaGFmcS2Rk&feature=related
Wow, I'm going to be sick.
-
Mario Brothers
Mario Bros. is completely different to Super Mario Bros.
I guess you can say it's a retelling of the old 'save the princess from the dragon' fairytales, but I wouldn't say it's a ripoff.
-
Apparently this game is coming in epsodes as a Wiiware.
I have mixed feelings about that, and by "Mixed feelings" I mean I hate that idea.
-
PSN and XBLA, too.
-
Not the point, point is: Can't they make a full game instead of episodes?
-
Not the point, point is: Can't they make a full game instead of episodes?
They said each episode, in itself, would be a full game trailing from an intro grassy area to eggman's base; something to that effect.
Still agree they should make it one full game, though.
-
Each ep a game? Doubt it, each ep being two acts, four at best.
-
Yeah, that don't seem necessary...
-
Quite simply, SEGA will never get it right. Take whatever little victories you can, and run with them.
-
Yes they are going to be released as "episodes", but they should all be full games. Think of it as like the release of Sonic and Knuckles. That game was a continuation of Sonic 3 but still had a standard amount of zones to play.
-
Where are you hearing this? I'd like confirmation. It's not like I don't believe you, but I want sources when it comes to SEGA.
-
Yeah, I'm not too sure on this. Sounds really iffy.
-
It was supposed to be one game. But sega ran out of time. So they released Sonic 3 first.
Thats why you can plug Sonic & Knuckles in Sonic 3 and play Sonic 3 & Knuckles.
Nah, or are you saying Sonic 2 & Knuckles also was supposed to be one game?
-
Back in the 90's I never would have EVER thought Sega would be making games for Nintendo. I used to have a fan-club for Nintendo in high-school. We absolutely despised Sega.
-
I always saw fanboyism as being silly. Except tough guys like me don't use words like "silly". We use words like "faggotish" and "for dickheads".
We also decorate with tough stuff, like skulls and daggers.
-
Don't forget you always have to have that rainbow unicorn in your back pocket or you lose all your toughness.
Sega + Nintendo. I still find this an odd combination.
-
Sorry, don't have faith in Sega. I'll end up playing this, but I am not expecting much.
-
. . .have that rainbow unicorn in your back pocket. . .
HMMMM....
-
Wait... Sega doesn't suck...?
You don't actually.... believe that... do you?
-
Wait... Sega doesn't suck...?
You don't actually.... believe that... do you?
This IS Lucas we are talking about. So ummm... you never know.
-
True, but then again I was never a big Sega or Sonic fan.
-
Also, love your new avatar and quote. Loved Army of Darkness, and Bruce Campbell forever!
-
No Sega does have )or did) good games, but thanls to Sonic they're all almost obscured.
-
Like Ristar for instance.
-
Madworld.
Publisher =/= Developer

Also, love your new avatar and quote. Loved Army of Darkness, and Bruce Campbell forever!
YES!
That is all.
EDIT: Oh, and I agree!
-
DF, you're going to need to try harder to convince me that this could possibly be anything but stupid.

Ristar is excellent.
-
DF, you're going to need to try harder to convince me that this could possibly be anything but stupid.
Yeah, but think about it this way: How many good games from that time period had horrible box arts?
-
Actually, the game is pretty challenging and trippy. Addictive too, kinda like Rocket Knight Adventures. The storyline is confusing and stuff, but what platformer of that time actually MADE sense?
-
Sonic's box art's wasn't very good. Neither was boogerman's.
-
Oh God Boogerman.
-
Did you play Sonic 2 & Knuckles? Its just Sonic 2 with Knuckles as the main character. Just some sort of... Bonus or something, for the people who got Sonic & Knuckles.
Oh and. Wikipedia.
Oh, then I don't really know why they are breaking the games into "episodes".
As far as Ristar is concerned, the game was great. The box art makes it seem like a generic title, but then again you should also look at the box art for Megaman.
Sweet mother of god. This looked like something drawn by a 13-year old.
But that was a good game. You can't always judge a book by it's cover.
-
Right, I mean look at Megaman, he looks like George Bush Jr. in a yellow and blue jumpsuit.
-
Oh God, I never thought of it that way, but you couldn't possibly be more correct.
-
Ristar is my favourite Mega Drive game. That's how ****ing good it is.
-
I don't believe any of you. I'm going to have to play this for myself.
-
It's kind of hard for Sega to survive in the gaming industry without their own platform unless they work with other consoles. UNLESS of course they decide to get back on their own system, when they seemed to have done substantially better..... Hmm. Maybe Nintendo allows Sega to publish for their consoles just so they can sabotage the products as an act of 20-year-stale vengeance? People are petty like that.
Sonic needs to do something for sure. Whatever happened to Princess Sally, Tails, and the rest of the gang? Espio, the headphones-crocodile guy, that other guy, and the like? Sega needs to get their shyte together before their company goes under entirely.

Just...why?
-
BIG NEWS: SONIC 4 IS NOT BEING DEVELOPED BY TEAM SONIC. (http://kotaku.com/5473427/sega-not-developing-sonic-4)
Welp, it might be good then.
-
Wait, didn't team sonic do Phantasy star online?
-
Yuji Naka, founder of Sonic Team, himself did it. However, the base formula for PSO was done back in 2000, when Sonic Team was still actually pretty good (EX: Sonic Adventure 1 and 2). I don't know how PSO is updated for each episode or whatever. Or even how it plays. It's a damn MMO. It's repetitive grinding and ****, it's not that hard to make fun for some people. In fact, MMO's don't play like sonic at all. The people at sonic team could easily be really good at making RPGs or something and fail at any other gameplay style (kind of like Squaresoft.) **** I don't know. For all I know, PSO could've been dropped by Sonic Team and picked back up by some other people.
Are you sure your news source is reliable though, archem? Alpha footage would suggest otherwise. (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uu3dHB-ZuH4)
This current version looks shitty, but you have to remember, it's an alpha. If you know how buggy betas can be, then raise the bugginess of a beta to the 10th and you have alpha. Compare to the Sonic 2 alpha. (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=R6SUGZacOfo)
-
****, I just realized that I posted "Team Sonic".
I should fix that.
Are you sure your news source is reliable though, archem?
This particular source is usually very reliable, but for the sake of covering my ***, here's something to look at. (http://marketplace.xbox.com/en-US/games/offers/0bbf0002-0000-4000-8000-000058410a07)
I'm aware that the Sonic Team logo is on most Sonic 4 media, though. Odds are, they're just there to get undue credit. It happens.
Also, Dimps (the development studio in-charge) has already made a couple of Sonic games in the fairly recent past. They've been for Nintendo handhelds, and have been more positively reviewed than the nonsense Sonic Team's been meddling with.
-
Yeah, it's not like I didn't read the article. I just saw the alpha footage and saw it said 'sonic team'. Though, interestingly, on dimps games, too (Sonic Advance series), the Sonic Team logo shows up anyway.
DF, you're going to need to try harder to convince me that this could possibly be anything but stupid.
Valiere, you suck. (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6B-oRy5Edbk)
-
Meh. To be honest, it doesn't look that good. And hug-headbutt attacks? Umh...
-
Shouldn't a shooting star be able to...I dunno...float or fly or something?
And not just when he swings on a magical doorstop.
-
Shouldn't a plumber have, like, tools or something? Perhaps toilets that need unclogging?
Video games in the 80s/90s don't need to follow your logic. That's half the fun in them.
-
I always wondered why Mario just doesn't beat everything with a pipe wrench.
-
Yeah, but he goes down pipes. There's tenuous plumbing-related activity.
-
Welp, Ristar certainly does shoot between planets when given the opportunity to, so there you go.
-
Welp, Ristar certainly does shoot between planets when given the opportunity to, so there you go.
True that. XD
-
I need to check out the Mega Drive version of Ristar, just because I like comparing the localized with the originals

FYI Princess Sally, or any of the characters that were exclusive to the comics and American TV shows are not truly canon to the game series. They barely have the same settings as in the games, too.
Sega tried to bring back Chaotix with Sonic Heroes and their appearance in the Sonic X cartoons, but they kind of fucked them up. They removed Mighty the Armadillo, which I guess wasn't their choice since Mighty's creator quit the team and took his copyrights with him, and they made Charmy annoying (he was originally 16, but now he's 6) and from there I guess they got kind of shoved into the category of "Annoying extra Sonic characters that should die in a fire", kind of like Big the Cat and Silver (Well deserved...)
As the for consoles, I think the reason why SEGA's systems failed was more along the side of terrible marketing rather than functionality. SEGA's last two systems were almost ahead of their times, but in turn they were more expensive than other systems like the Playstation and N64. There were also some embarrassing flaws that kind of killed SEGA's chance of competing with other companies. I don't think they'll go back to making systems any time soon.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sega_Saturn#Performance_in_the_marketplace
If Wikipedia is right, then Sony also did a good job at kicking the sh*t out of SEGA. :P
-
All the Sonic characters who aren't Tails, Sonic, Knuckles or Robotnik are redundant and should be removed like the cancerous mass they are.
-
knuckles and tails can eat a dick too
-
For the longest time I thought that Knuckles was a girl.
Until I heard him speak in...that crappy psuedo adventure game where you control three characters at once on the Xbox (I don't know why we got it).
-
knuckles and tails can eat a dick too
I like Knuckles. Although he made every level in Sonic 3 and relevant counterparts a cakewalk.
-
Shouldn't a shooting star be able to...I dunno...float or fly or something?
And not just when he swings on a magical doorstop.
Inertia.
-
I actually don't have a beef with most of the characters. These are my issues.
1. Having both anthromorphic animals AND humans in the world. Pick one or the other. Yes, I know this means Robotnik's out, but it's better than running around on your stubby little furry legs doing fetch quests for full-sized human beings (as in Sonic Chronicles).
2. Way too many characters per game...Just develop the ones you have instead of adding more...
3. A gazillion versions of Sonic. There's Sonic. There's pink Sonic. There's robo-Sonic. White Sonic. Black Sonic. In that crappy cartoon, there was a trio of Sonics. Why???
4. The super saiyan thing they do is just idiotic.
-
I despise Sonic, even the earlier ones. Mario is just better is every way, shape and form.
1. The characters are absolutely hateful. They're either suggestive skanks, brainless small
girls or jocks with no personality.
2. Why do they want chaos emeralds? They're just crystals that give you stupid powers.
3. It's trial and error. Certain levels involve enemies or traps which are actually physically
impossible to avoid the first time round.
4. You just hold -> for 5 minutes every level, rarely doing any jumping or using any skill.
5. Every game ever made > Sonic.
-
5. Every game ever made > Sonic.
Have you ever tried Turbo Turtle?
I've seen this game on a GBA Emulator. Played about 5 minutes. Never want to play it again.
Lame puzzle game where you move a turtle shell around a level to collect I don't remember what, and falling/dying/whatever makes you start the whole level every times.
I've never been a Sonic fan either, though. I don't like his presence in Brawl, especially since nearly all his attacks look the same from what I've seen.
-

But I do this, mix multiple character types in a world... then again... mine look more human and have some reason as to WHY.

BIG NEWS: SONIC 4 IS NOT BEING DEVELOPED BY SONIC TEAM. (http://kotaku.com/5473427/sega-not-developing-sonic-4)
The leaked footage suggests that they did. This is weird.
-
It's probably for the best. The only Sonic games in the last decade or so that critics even cared for were Sonic Advance and the Sonic Rush series......which weren't made by the Sonic Team. They were developed by Dimps, the same team that's doing Sonic 4. Which means the Sonic Team's been behind every single Sonic game that's sucked for a long time.
-
4. You just hold -> for 5 minutes every level, rarely doing any jumping or using any skill.
This is a common misconception. Most of the levels, especially in the older games, had traps, platforming and branching paths which made it varied and fun to play. The 3d games tried to mimic this but only SA1 and 2 (and Unleashed's day stages) really made it feel like you were playing a Sonic game and not some shitty cash-in. Secret Rings was okay. I liked it, but I'll take SA2 over it anyday.
-
The leaked footage suggests that they did. This is weird.
We've gone over this.
-
I despise Sonic, even the earlier ones. Mario is just better is every way, shape and form.
1. The characters are absolutely hateful. They're either suggestive skanks, brainless small

Because Mario characters have so much personality, it just bleeds from every orifice. Unless we're talking the Mario RPGs, noone in Mario has any personality at all, really.
2. Why do they want chaos emeralds? They're just crystals that give you stupid powers.
Doesn't every villain in everything ever just seek power, in the end?
3. It's trial and error. Certain levels involve enemies or traps which are actually physically
impossible to avoid the first time round.
This is just wrong.
4. You just hold -> for 5 minutes every level, rarely doing any jumping or using any skill.
Maybe if you're playing Sonic Heroes.
5. Every game ever made > Sonic.
Shaq Fu is better than Sonic? Huh.
-
Nice counter-point.
-
I happen to heart sonic. and hate how his image has been whored out.
but sonic 3 and SaK? omg. so good.
and I'll tell you why.
because sonic is a bad ***.
-
Because Mario characters have so much personality, it just bleeds from every orifice. Unless we're talking the Mario RPGs, noone in Mario has any personality at all, really.
Well, at least they don't speak... They are what you make them pretty much. That's what kinda ruins Sonic for me, they added a bunch of characters and these characters have horrible one-liners, voice overs and seem to be more about the image of a cool/stereotypical highschool kid than an actual character.
Sure the Toads in the mario games speak and no one likes that guy.
Also, Shadow the hedgehog made me bury all hope for a good Sonic game. When you mix three worlds like that in hopes of creating awesome I feel sorry for them.

I HATE shadow the hedgehog too.
honestly? I'd like it if they just forgot everything they did after sonic and knuckles.
except sonic advanced...that was kinda cool

Quite simply, SEGA will never get it right. Take whatever little victories you can, and run with them.
Yeah. You would think the public would realize this after SEGA was kicked in the nuts and epic failed at console creation.

I don't have a beef about this, actually. The Sonic world is similar to those American cartoons where both talking, anthropomorphic characters are coexisting with humans. If it's tolerated in that area, than why not this? Sonic's world was always a fictional, alternate version of planet Earth (the "Mobius" ordeal was a mistranslation), so I think it would make sense to have humans in it, though I do prefer more animal characters to be of focus rather than them.
2. Way too many characters per game...Just develop the ones you have instead of adding more...
Sonic pretty much had 5-6 other characters before 1994, including those on the game gear like Fang the Sniper and the two on the Japan-only Sega Sonic Arcade (Mighty the Armadillo and Ray the Flying Squirrel). Though they only developed a few out of those, my point is that they've been doing this for a while. Heck, you should check out this:
Sonic having a band was conceived during the first game. It was originally planned for a flashy sound test feature but it took up too much space.
So... They were probably planning this from the beginning, then again it doesn't mean they can't stop it.
3. A gazillion versions of Sonic. There's Sonic. There's pink Sonic. There's robo-Sonic. White Sonic. Black Sonic. In that crappy cartoon, there was a trio of Sonics. Why???
There is Shadow Mario, Baby Mario, Paper Mario (even though they are technically the same?), etc... My only reasoning for this is that franchises are franchises. Companies seem to like to milk these to the bare bone.
4. The super saiyan thing they do is just idiotic.
I personally find the fact that they referenced it to be kind of cool, but that's just me I guess.

On a side note, I just found this:

No, this isn't Deviant Art crap, it's concept art. Sega did conceive a possibility of Sonic rescuing a female damsel, similar to Mario, back when they were planning for the first game. Imagine how the franchise would be if this became true...

Actually, "Tails" isn't his real name. Miles Prower is. Just wanted to point that out. Because that's the way it is.
I did enjoy Sonic 2 (since it's pretty much the only one I've tried) but just like many games from these times, the fact that you couldn't save turned me off. Haven't tried any beside this one, and judging by the numerous posts about how bad the newest one are, I guess I haven't missed much.

also, if you look at the one with the bird machine, it looks like she was kidnapped by Homsar.

Oh I'm pretty sure mostly everyone, or even everyone knows his real name since they mention it when you play Sonic 2, but I just wanted to point it out for no particular reason. I'm just that great!
Didn't know you could save on Sonic 3 since I've only played Sonic 2. And when I get tired of playing, I'd like to be able to save rather than try to beat the game anyway or have to play from start again.
Guess I could try Sonic Advance, seems like it's not bad and I suppose you can save in it, too.
Oh and what is supposed to be that "creature" at the bottom left of that drawing..?
-
I think it's a baseball bat with legs.
-
Better question is... why is a Goomba wannabe and a cannon ballet dancing?
-
I don't think that concept art was meant to be seen by anyone.
-
They should have hid it better in that case. XD

Man artists had an easier job back then.
