Title: Hey guys
Post by: forgetaboutit on October 03, 2010, 04:02:14 AM
As most of you noticed, Charas's been quite dead lately. Anyone has any suggestions that could make the place more lively? Community projects, new forum stuff, site stuff, anything.

I'm just asking, by the way. Not promising that any of it will actually be done. But its great to hear what people have to say. :]]

Aand. Where else do you guys usually go to, when you are not on Charas? Just curious. We have some people here that are very different from each other. Would be interesting finding out what they do on the internet when they are not on the big blue page.

To make it more alive, maybe add more resources for other game makers. Problably wouldnt do much good though.

I unfortunately have no idea what could resurrect Charas beside having more people. And that can't really be helped...

When I'm not on Charas, I'm either at school or playing that piece of sh*t that is CoD:MW2.

Anyway, to answer the question of where I am, I have a list of links.

http://www.facebook.com
http://www.micromarching.com
http://www.fantasymarchingarts.com
http://www.youtube.com
http://www.failblog.org

That is basically everything I do when I'm not on Charas when I am on the internet at least.

Basically webcomics.

Oh, and Game Maker.

When I'm not on Charas?

WoW
GamingW
Facebook
Yantar
and uh, I talk to people a lot on Steam. And play games on Steam

When I'm not actually on the computer at all, I tend to play console games, read, watch TV/movies, or exercise. I ****ing hate exercise.

In regards to your first question; can't fix what ain't broke. I like charas as it is, although a little more all of all activitiy would be nice, but it's pretty much fine.

Browsing or making Brawl textures/mods
Reading webcomics
Programming a Game Maker engine
Browsing Youtube
Looking at NES game collections
TvTropes

I know there's been contests before, but how about a little more often? Contests get me pumped up, that's for sure. Maybe adding more will get people more excited.

As for when I'm not on Charas...
-www.gamefaqs.com (barely go here, though)

And when I'm not online...usually on this computer working on my game.
Don't really play much video games, but I guess that's because there's not much around.

TvTropes

My thoughts exactly.

As for new stuff, I have no clue... I doubt a forum-made game will really draw anyone new.  I would suggest adding in more expansive game making stuff besides RM2k3 (even though I still use it quite a bit).

What makes me a good Demoman?! If I were a BAD Demoman, I wouldn't be playing TF2 all the time now would I?!

Charas cannot live again, until it updates it's views on stuff.

As far as teh internets goes, we're still an rm2k resource website. With maniacs in their forums.

Also may I add that although the forum scheme is nostalgic and retro, it isn't very good, or appealing.

Also, Saikar needs to be officially be recognized as a manly man.

Furthermore, facebook, gamefaqs, youtube, livejournal, deviantart, ytmnd, rmvx.ne, knowyourmemet and other websites, but I don't want to disclose those cause people then stalk me.

I think just a software update might suffice. By that I mean, expand from rpgmaking, to general game making. Attract traffic from people using gamemaker, rpgmaker, and stencyl. The only problem is chars wouldn't really be "unique" anymore. The only way to do that is to update the generators so they're not so early 2000's. a generator that makes all varyings kinds of resources is really ambitious tho and not really useful for serious amateur game makers.

And yes, I agree with html about charas appearance. We like it, but its very unappealing to newcomers and makes charas hard to take seriously.

Also, phone doesn't allow editing posts, so as a double post this shall remain.

Yeah this is really true it actually REPULSES some people I've tried to get to join charas in past. It's really terrible and eye-burning.

A good Demoman is a dead Demoman.

Can't we like keep this one as a personal choice and then just make a new one for guests and members as default?

I still like my charas blue.

Okay...

Front page wont be changed for a while. And when it does, Im sure it will still be blue. The bald sprite head will remain. Don't stress it.

However, Ive got some suprises on the way for sometime next week

Are we going to add more CR/Charas categories?
Being able to make a platformer sprite in that would be awesome.

Im not sure who is in charge of CR management. Ill find out. If nobody is on it, Ill have to find somebody to do this.

I fully intend on making the flash generator compatible with side scrooling platformers...I have the templates, but things need to be added.

The flash generator is slow going though, I wont sugarcoat it. Im trying to make it in Stencyl, so I can have the flash embedded into a topic or the news page. So far, Im working on it solo, and eventually, Im sure if I get help with it, progress will speed up.

The changes might be slow coming, but Im trying dudes...Osmose is pretty busy with work and life. Ill drop a news article soon on the progress of things, as well as a little bit of a roadmap. Id like to see traffic increase. And yeah, the 1998 mainpage is a huge turnoff. Honestly though, the shittiness of the mainpage is not my biggest priority. Id like to be able to offer people something more up to date then our current generators...and the idea of posting some flash games, or getting somebody on doing some manner of indy game review blog type thing on the mainpage would be swell. For a game making webpage...its sad that we dont have a bunch of awesome things for people to play...I dont even care if theyre made by us...we need cool things, and traffic. New users that arent here once, or looking for a blueGaiaonline

It's not like a complaint. It was more of a "when do these things happen" kind of thing. Like how and why Mid is an admin. Although that's been discussed before.

We'll see about that.

I make people admins that I want to make admins, and I generally want to make people admins that seem to indicate that they'll do a pretty good job as an admin. It's not the most impartial, peer-reviewed system in the world, but it gets things done, and someone has to take the roll of staff leader so we can keep things fresh so it might as well be me.
