There was this amazing Top Gear cover on youtube that I sometimes listened to. Now it's gone. :/

They shouldn't be. Fair use, and all that jazz.
However, there are most definitely trolls about.
Copyright claims aren't really thoroughly looked into on youtube, for some stupid reason.

It is against copyright to arrange or remix a piece of music without consent of the original composer with the exception of anything in Pubic Domain.  =/

Disagreed. It's to protect the original creator of it and for them to be sure who uses their work. Without these laws, you could easily get mixed up with who created what.

^This

You can do it legally -- but it costs lots o monies because you are buying the rights to mess with the song.  Marching Bands do it all the time to popular music as well as band music.

The pubic domain is a pretty hairy area.

If you stick to things that are over 200 years old it should be pretty safe. ;)

Its illegal without expressed consent from the creator if it is for profit. will.i.am had that shitty song From My Momma that originally had Daft Punk's Around the World.

They were pissed as balls and so he retracted it.
