So... this was an idea that was tossed around a few months ago. Well, I stopped playing minecraft for a while but got back into it when I found this awesome mod called Pixelmon (http://pixelmonmod.com). It's still in early development and thus has quite a few bugs, but it's still a lot of fun. After doing a bit of research, I found that buying monthly server space for 20 people is fairly cheap, roughly a bit more than dollar a person depending on the host.
So I was thinking, after being dissatisfied with other servers I've found, this mod is best played with other people and I may be willing to throw down some cash to get a server up and running. If I did, I'm wondering who might be interested? It would be whitelisted to start. I'm fairly certain I would boot up an old adventure map as the server basis. This presents a few pros and cons which I'll list in this spoiler:
PROS
Established structures to start with.
Most structures are situated on this awesome and large peninsula.
Players would be forced to travel to collect things like shards or fossils. Thus encouraging building distant towns.
CONS
Pre-rendered map means no fossils or shards within spawn.
Server Objectives
So yeah. The main point of this server would be basically to have people build towns and vie for gymleader positions/badges where gyms are built by players. Potentially, could establish an elite four and/or tournaments.
Other ideas are basically up to the players. Like, for me, for instance, I love the idea of connecting towns and building towns with paths and rails. I've done this same thing in single player worlds by myself. It's what I like to do mostly in minecraft.
Mods that will be installed:
-Pixelmon
-Noppes NPCs
Mods to be considered:
-Bibliocraft
-Red Power 2
-Backpacks
With Noppes NPC, easy monetary system and trading can be established making items made less accessible by pixelmon mod buyable. NPC mod also allows creation of teleport points between cities, banks, quests, and bosses. Bibliocraft just works well with pixelmon, providing shelving, bookcases, and various decor. Any other mod suggestions are welcome.
With that in mind, the main story behind this world would be simple and to the point:
A portal to another world briefly opened in Minecraftia and through which came pokemon, but the minecraft world morphed and changed their shape, creating pixelmon. Basically, this explains why there would still be places where one could fight typical minecraft mobs and also NPC mobs and bosses for prizes or quests. This also explains the first NPC a new player would encounter. Professor Testificate, who, upon the arrival of pixelmon, studied these strange creatures emphatically and gives the new player some starting items, pokeballs and potions and stuff and most importantly a map.
Building:
Because I don't want people griefing the hell out of everything, when, potentially, the server would become public, I imagine a system of buying plots of land approved by me or other admins. Basically, this would prevent griefing, give people protection and ensure other people's property is not encroached upon. It would also still allow people to build where ever they want. Find a plot of land you like? As long as it's not encroaching on anyone's property you can buy for x coins per x blocks. You could build on land that was not claimed but if it wasn't protected, you could be griefed. See economy system for deets.
Economy:
I've noticed a lot of servers like to make an economy ridiculous or impossible to get enough coin to do anything on the server unless you donate. I have no interest in doing this. I'm doing this for fun so I would a fair economy system where gathering coins isn't pointless and can be done doing simple in game things. Donations aren't even something I want to consider touching at this point. For example, if you and a few buds build a town and you buy protection on it, that protection would be guaranteed indefinitely. Minecraft is essentially a never ending world with neverending building space, I can't imagine why there'd be a need to force people to pay monthly fees to keep protection.
Obviously, there are details to work out, but I'm wondering how many people might be interested in helping me get this off the ground or just play on a server like this. Again, this was just an idea that appealed to me, no idea if I'll actually do it. I may be able to persuade some people from another server I've been playing on to join but that's not definite.
Here is the basic details I've hammered out so far. WIP

Thoughts? Suggestions?

Haven't played Minecraft in ages but would be fun to check out. I wouldn't count on me being a full-time player though, so don't put down money for me.
-
Well, I play Minecraft often enough, and my current setup is pretty reliant on friends (which means I have a lot of solo time if they're not on), so this sounds like a fun thing to participate in. I usually prefer my Minecraft to be vanilla (or close to it), but it could be fun to inject a little Pokémon into the mix.
-
I added some details at the bottom of the first post. Any suggestions or ideas are welcome.
And drace, I haven't bought the server space yet, I'm waiting to see what ppl think of the idea. I'd pay for the space myself since it is relatively cheap.
-
I'd possibly be interested.. I play minecraft a lot with my buddies, but we always play in 'creative mode' and just create the coolest/craziest towns/structures we can.
-
to be honest I'd rather play the Aether or Hack/Mine.
I'm not exactly the biggest pokemon fan.
-

Well that's no fun. I always make crazy stuff with friends in survival. We once made an underwater city. It took weeks to create, but it was truly a sight to behold. Creative mode would have cheapened the accomplishment.
-
Yeah, same here, I prefer Survival. Creative is fun, but I like gathering my mats, even if it takes way longer. Kind of enjoy spelunking and finding ores. Mobs are sort of annoying some times, though... but it's fun.
However, I much prefer vanilla over modded Minecraft.

I agree that it would have cheapened the the accomplishment, but if you spent the few weeks in creative mode instead, you could have created an entire underwater NATION. Maybe I just feel this way because I'm very impatient lol.
-
i agree with both sides. creative is faster and vanilla often leaves ugly scars in the landscape if people arent careful. this server would be survival. only spawn and dungeons for quests would be creative.
-
Eh, survival is boring. I'd have done it if creative, but nobody does creative these days.

Hack/Mine Survival isn't boring. :3
-
How is survival boring? In Creative you just... Place whatever you want. What's the point? If I wanted to make art I'd paint something.
And Drace... I wasn't aware... Is it you???!??!?!?!?!?!
-
*gasp!* No!
Well, maybe. Not the best kept secret.
-
But I haven't been observant.
Doctor, seriously. I missed you man. We should speak some sort of private channel.
-
Think it took longer to notice since I'm not sporting my sexy flamey avatar and signature. Also you can pm or facebook me all you want.
-
Oh wow. Drace. Neat-o
I'd definitely be interested, but first I need to get a copy of Minecraft. I've actually been planning on getting a copy soon, but other pertinent things that cost money keep popping up. Most of the time, those things end up being food.
-
but. In all honesty I would really like an RPG style server if possible. :P
It's really easy to do.

I can see how someone who just wants to build can get bored by having to farm the thousands of stones necessary for their big project.
Personally, I do enjoy spelunking, farming mats, slowly building stuff. But there are times, when I have a project in mind, where I'm tempted to go creative or give myself stuff. But... I try to stay "legit" while playing survival.
Only thing that really bothers me is food/health. Nothing annoys me more than getting hurt by an enemy and being forced to waste food because I'm at 8.5 health instead of 9 so I don't regenerate. I really think it should be 8-9-10 for health regen... but anyway.
I guess I could maybe try out the server thing, but I don't know, I'm not much of a PokéFan anymore.
-
Honestly, I'd like it if health regen scaled based on how much food you have. A full 10 is nice and fast, but 4 or 5 is very slow. If you only have a half food, you're not going to be getting your health back any time soon.
-
Yeah, that'd be pretty cool. really hate wasting things that fills your hunger by 4 points when you're at 8.5 just so you can regen health. Wish they'd do this.
I guess we could go and suggest or stuff, but I'm fairly certain some other people who also were annoyed by that already did without much success. Then again, maybe not.
I'm too lazy to check and stuff, so I'll just deal with the annoyance.
-
i agree with that sentiment of farming massive amounts of basic blocks. block shop npcs could be set up to make it easier to get huge quantities of blocks for builds. i imagine quarry npcs, lumberjack npcs, etc. And it would be cheap because as I said before, monotony is not what I'm going for. Also, i want to include the backpack mod to allow for hauling of massive amounts of stuff around.
Here are some screenshots of what I've got in mind.
As you may notice, I'm using an old adventure map I posted a topic about as the basis for the server.
After completing a simple pokemon-esque quest (getting a package in another town for the professor) you receive some pokeballs, potions, coins, a map of the region and of course, a pokedex.
Pixelmon ores will not spawn within this region. Which is a con of using an old map as the server basis. However, it'll inspire people to push outward into unexplored chunks. More on a solution to this problem below.
The central town. I want to expand this to encompass the tower. It's almost directly in the center of the world. It's also the first port and where I want to place the majority of important shops to offer items for sale that can't be gotten easily through normal means in pixelmon. i.e., TMs, berries, etc.
Given the geography of the peninsula and there being continents surrounding it for the most part, I think it'd be neat to build towns right on the edge of what I'm calling the "frontier". Venturing outside the borders of the currently generated map will start to generate pixelmon exclusive ores and also remove spawn protection and allow building and mining. Since there's a giant ocean, all these towns can be connected by a port and allow quick transport between them and serve as a great example for the port building challenge.
Also, Felix, since the server is built off an old adventure map, I was going to include those structures for quests. So, there will be a huge RPG element. Since the whole concept is a mesh of pokemon and minecraft, it makes sense to me that the RPG element of minecraft would remain. Meaning, mobs will be present in certain areas and crafting weapons and armor will be needed to fight those mobs.
I think that's essentially what I'm looking to do for now with the server. If people are interested, I'd like to set up the server soon and a preliminary team can start making this happen. But I want input too. any ideas or build ideas people want to do, I want to do, so long as it fits the theme.
There are many things I'm not sure what to do with yet. For example, the giant tower. It's filled with mob spawners, traps and puzzles. It could stay that way, or it could become something different, like a battle tower, a battle arena, a gym. Or it could stay as a quest location. And there are four temple dungeons around the map that could keep their original purpose. Though, one of them, a giant tree, kind of looks ugly.
Just an update of what my thoughts on it. As for buying the server space and all, I'll be doing that probably soon. I'm feeling pretty good about this. I'm thinking it'll be whitelisted at first since it will be in the building stage and anyone of you who asks me will be able to log in and see what's going on. That's it for now I guess.
-
I can guarantee I'll immediately want to forge my way across the waters via subaqua tunnels.
-

It's 3D, interactive art that you can share with friends.
In survival mode, if you want to put a tower there, you have to muck around finding the right types of materials, which means lots of boring digging and fighting monsters in a clunky combat system and worrying about darkness and food and all that BS. And even maybe you just can't find the right types of materials in the right colors you want because they're not very accessible to newer players or are just rare in the world.
In creative mode, if you want to put a tower there, you put the f'ing tower there.
Survival mode is just busywork to get to the fun parts. I guess there's a sort of tranquility in easy, mindless work, but eh, some of us have jobs and want to see this thing start looking cool within a few hours, not a few weeks.
-
honestly, to me, it depends on what im doing. if ive got a project im doing on my own, its creative mode all the way. with friends or on a server i enjoy survival mode.

I see it as a means to an end. I'm not just building a farm and home to walk around it like a zoo and museum; I'm putting the farm and home to work. I live in the house, sleep in the house, and store my plunders and tools there. I work the farmland and raise the animals to provide food to keep me going. If I'm in creative, these things all suddenly lack a purpose. If I'm making an adventure location for the enjoyment of those I share it with, then creative is ideal. Anything else is just making a 3D snapshot and never being able to use it.
-
Sweet
-
In regards to the tower. The original RPG/Adventure Map purpose of it will remain. I just realized I can make the doors to the tower open only after a certain quest is finished and it will be character specific. So a group of people could finish a certain, epic quest in order to allow the gates to open for them and it is epic and cool. So, thus, it shall remain as it is, epic and awesome and redstoney. :D that's my update and all I have to say about that. When I get the server up, y'all shall see what I mean.

I grew up on a farm and did all of that in real life for around 18 years, including building additions to our house/barn/sheds, planting and picking crops, chopping down trees, digging holes to put up fences, and taking care of the animals obviously. It really wasn't all that fun in real life and so I have little to no desire to do it all over again as a character in a video game lol.
-
Not a big Harvest Moon fan then are you?
-
I enjoy both. I think you need builders on servers to make awesome structures for those who like to explore and mine and gather materials.
Also. I'm still unsure if I'll do this with the whole pokemon thingy.
-
It seems a little unnecessary.
-
the pokemon thing or builders?
-
pokemon. Especially with my potato of a laptop.
This toaster has issues running any mod.
-
you should try optifine then. it can help improve performance alot by basically giving you more graphics options.

Yea. Still don't want pokemon. :3

Someone's a debbie downer :<

well, the pokemon mod is kind of an important mod right now. when i get the server up you can come check it out and see if you like it.
-
but why? :c
