Title: My RPG ~ Quasigen Island ~ Demo Release Checklist!
Post by: zuhane on July 07, 2009, 11:46:43 PM
A run-through of how you'd play Quasigen Island:

Welcome to the thread! I hope you stick around and have a quick read. Quasigen Island is my attempt at spicing up
the normal RPG formula you see in games today. I includes all those things you love, like levelling up, equipping items
and picking moves from a menu, but it adds rhythm-based elements, minigames and timing, making battles challenging
and adding various outcomes.

It's a game containing rich MP3 soundtracks composed by someone I respect a lot - along with some brilliant voice acting
from the voice acting guild website. Also, absolutely everything in the game is custom built. None of it is taken from other games -
I mean every pixel is drawn from scratch by me or by a requestee.

I also despise games where you play as a generic swordsman and know a generic girl who's introvert and casts heal spells, and
you just travel to castles and talk to kings and tap spacebar to win fights. Those games are boring! This game is an attempt
to start something original and fun. It's got trip-hop and 70s music, a bright orange setting, it's set in the near future
and it features comedy writing, a storyline with motive and reason behind it, and intense, action-packed battles which
don't grind on you after a while.

The battle system itself is a lot like Paper Mario and Warioware, but feels like Fallout 3 when is comes to character customisation.
It's really coming on in leaps and bounds, and a demo should be on its way before we know it!

FEATURES:

- Completely custom battle system.
- Completely custom menu system.
- Voice acting.
- MP3 soundtrack.
- No level grinding.
- Interesting characters with planned and mindmapped personalities and motives.
- Real life biology references.
- An insane amount of customisation. The character can find over 30 Zone Icons, giving them new powers. Each Zone Icon can have
literally tens of different upgrades applied to it. The game already has hundreds of switches and variables at this early stage, making
it a really customised, polished type of game.
- Stock market system.
- Custom working Item Menu.
- Talking enemies in battles whcih insult you!
- AVI animated cutscenes created by me!

Please comment, etc! Thanks a lot! :D

Can't say much else, as you don't have much graphics, but still. OMFG.

Interesting battle system. I like the look of it.

There are 2 main characters throughout the game:

Kruz and Octan.

Kruz in the main character, whilst Octan is actually a test experiment who is
unfinished. Kruz feels guilty about leaving him and decides to take him. Whilst
Kruz takes part in all of the normal battles, Octan is in charge of other things, such
as defending rooms from hordes of enemies by plugging defensive mechanisms into
nodes (which I'll come onto later on)

Kruz-
(http://i302.photobucket.com/albums/nn111/zuhane/NewBitmapImage-1.jpg)
A 100% new sprite. Spiffy recolouring done by Purple.

Kruz uses experiments he has created or found as weapons. Whether using a centrifugal
vial launcher or his entity cutter, he isn't physically strong, so uses these strange weapons.

Very rough renders of the Entity Cutter and CVL close up:

When he attacks, he only does 2 damage. But after some stat points are spent and some Zone
Icons are found, that won't be a problem.

As the game features a sense of humour, along with voice acting in the important cutscenes (not
whilst roaming around the map), Kruz will have a Russian accent and a very cynical outlook on
life.

There, now you know a little bit about our hero!

Hey Zuhane i am willing to sprite some stuff for you.  Preferably objects or monsters or Charsets, although im not sure how your monsters are done and if they are animated or not.

Tilesets and terrain i cannot do.

But ya let me know if u want me too make some things.

Also your combat ideas are Zany and crazy, i love it!

Felix, don't worry about the text, it's quite readable once the game is enlarged in Windowed or Fullscreen
mode. If it persists, I'll change it for you!

RockJohnAxe, that'd be great if you could help me! Do you have any examples of your work I can see?

Sorry for the double post but it's an update so you know.

This is basically my rough idea for a "Drone" which is a slow, stupid and loveable
enemy. Probably the most common, well-known enemy on the game. Variations of
it are designed to guard the laboratories.

Uberpwn, I need him facing left and to be an animated charset.

-When in battle, he needs an idle stance, where he just breathes.
-He needs an attack animation where he removes his blaster and fires left at the hero.
-He needs an animation of himself being hurt.
-He needs an animation of him doing a special attack. For this, you can draw him
opening a PDA and pressing buttons to issue a command.
-He needs a dead sprite.

If you could do them I'd be eternally grateful!

Also... I don't know whether to have him as a normal charset who walks around the map
or not. Maybe it would be easier to use that one charset for all enemies on the map until
you enter battle. Any thoughts?

I'd like your opinion before I make any more significant progress. It was tough trying to capture some of the details within the pixel limit.
Title: Re: Tropical Biotechnology RPG - Demo on its way!
Post by: zuhane on July 11, 2009, 08:22:51 AM
That's very nice. They have a kind of scrawny, pathetic look about them which I wanted
them to have. You also seem to have included all those details on such a small scale.

Yep, looks great. Keep it up!

On the front page, I've allocated people to different jobs... if that's okay with them. If you
want to get involved then just ask :D

I've basically sorted the intro cutscene out, but it needs the sprites. So I'm leaving that for
now. At the moment I've ran into a little coding problem which I'm gonna have fun fixing!
That's about all that's happened.

I don't know what the policy is on double posting in your own thread with updates.
If it's like illegal or something then I apologize!

Anyway, the battle system is nearing perfect completion. Once I have the first enemy
sprite created by Uberpwn, a decent map and a few more sound effects to suit
the game better, you can expect to see a short demo on its way, which will show you
all the mechanics of the game.

In the demo you'll be able to have a short battle, equip a couple of Zone Icons and get
a basic feel for the style of the game. Unfortunately, you won't be able to customize
any Zone Icons or character traits in this demo. Yeah, that's it!

Ah brilliant. Well there's all room for spriters if the need calls. At the moment,
we're doing okaywith the monsters etc, but random NPCs and characters could
always be your thing if Uberpwn is set a stupid amount of work.

Any chance of a demo yet?

You wouldn't believe what a problem I'm having just creating ONE battle. Once
this battle has been created, it can be semi copy-pasted, meaning it will take about 30 minutes
to create a different type of battle. I just have to create the backbone, which is proving very
difficult, but still possible. I haven't had to stop because there's something I can't do, it just
means I have some horrific logic puzzles to figure out!
Title: Re: Tropical Biotechnology RPG (CBS)
Post by: zuhane on July 16, 2009, 11:45:14 AM
Right, Uberpwn. Would you be able to make a small battle animation of
the impact of the blast from the Drone's gun?

Basically, you'd have to make a small green electrical explosion or splat if
that's okay.

And as an update, the a basic battle has ALMOST been created. I can feel the
battle getting pieced together better and better each and and it's nearing completion!

Just tried it out and it looks fine. Thanks again Uber! The next thing I'd like to to focus on if that's okay
is adding more to a chipset.

If you look at this for a moment and then save it:

Basically, that chipset needs to all be custom. Currently, only the very small areas circled in red are
custom tiles not from games. If you could spruce it up by adding variations of tiles, potted plants, maybe
a few computer terminals and ventilation fans, that would be great.

You'll also see a weird picture underneath. That's my plans for the opening room. Would you be able to
sprite a counter/desk for the tileset, shown on the left, a chair and benches, shown on the right, A plasma
screen sign saying BML with a logo, which is represented at the top and finally, the circles at the bottom represent
floor lights. If you could sprite the map up for me, the game would start looking a lot more professional in an
instant. Thanks!

As far as the team goes, people want to see a demo, so I won't need anyone for spriting etc YET. I should have finished the battle system
this week, although I've come across a coding problem involving timers, which isn't going to help me. Once Uberpwn adds
a few map features and I have an extremely basic battle demo made, then I will release a demo for you all. Once this is made
I'm gonna start recruiting people properly, depending on what they're good at. Similarly, I'll be making a seperate "requests"
thread, meaning I'll ask people for help there and post updates here!

Hey. I think Uberpwn is currently working on this map. The other problem is that
everything needs to be more modernised to fit the scene of a futuristic laboratory.
Thanks for starting a chipset, but I think Uber is taking charge of it. However, you've
obviously put in effort, so what you've created so far can still be used in the game
if that's okay!

Extra news: I've bumped into a couple of coding issues which I can't resolve. This is
severely hindering my work. I can't finish a battle until I can figure this problem out.
Is there anyone with a lot of coding knowledge who'd be able to help me? If so, please
add me on msn or PM me.

I'VE FINISHED THE BATTLE SYSTEM!

Unfortunately, I'm having a strange problem. I can play through the
first stage of a battle, meaning I can attack, then both the enemies attack.
After that, it starts screwing up when it returns to the player's turn. So, I have a proposal.

Are there any people out there with a lot of coding knowledge who'd like to test
the game out? When I say that, I mean try it and tell me the problems.

Anyone up for it (with a lot of coding experience), please let me know!

Oh okay. Small update to the front page. Come on Uberpwn!!

===UPDATE 07-08-09===

Hey people! It was an uphill struggle of despair, but the battle system is officially
working. However, I reaaaally need a few sprites from Uberpwn before I can release
a short demo. The demo will be nothing special, just a small battle and tutorial.

After this, people who are interested can be recruited properly and assigned different
jobs depending on what they're good at. At this rate, the game will start being developed
at an amazing rate. The main battle system was the frameworks of the game, meaning
cutscenes, CMS, mapping, battles etc will be EASY to make from here on!

Also, once this demo is released, I'm gonna have this thread scrapped, then make a new game
request thread and game update thread to keep things organised and easy to understand!

Update - 27 - August - 2009

Hey everyone. It's been a long time since I've actually updated this thread! The battle system
was becoming a little TOO complex for my liking. So I've made some minor and major tweaks in different
areas. This keeps it simple to a certain degree, but also makes the player focus directly on what
Zone Tiles they have equipped and how they will suit each situation.

As normal, when Kruz (the hero) attacks, he is teleported to the Zone etc. This happens as normal.
The only tweak is that each particular battle only allows certain Zone Icons to be used. This will be
shown in your PDA, so you know which Icons will come in handy. I won't be extremely restrictive,
but this will stop inconveniences, such as players gaining mass EXP from fighting extremely weak
enemies and exploiting areas. There will still be much room left for customization.

However, enemies do not attack with Zones any longer. When an enemy attacks, it is ALWAYS a
special attack. This means that some special situation will arise and the hero will have to fix this
situation in the smallest amount of time possible to take the least damage. If the hero completely
dodges an enemy attack, or finds something useful whilst being attacked, some MP will be restored
in battle to be able to use more specials. Additionally, the player wins "Style Points" which can only be
gained that way. These take effect later on when building a fort :D
Title: Re: Tropical Biotechnology RPG *Just waiting for some sprites!*
Post by: zuhane on August 27, 2009, 09:24:53 AM
Additionally, I'm also making a system known as the RDS (Robotic description service) in
the menu. This gives a slightly humorous and fun insight into the origins of places, enemies
and also items. This will be ever-so-slightly similar to the animations in Bioshock when you
buy plasmids, but not at the same time. A large scale of enemies and items will have their own
animations with a narrative female robot voice on top (using a talented voice actor, not microsoft
narrator) and certain audio effects.

Here's a very basic example:

Tell me what you think!

3. Right after I got back to Florida, school started. (I'm a freshie now >:D)

So yeah. I might get around to doing some stuff during the weekend possibly maybe hopefully.

element with more fun alternatives!

So like. I feel really bad about this, but quite honestly, I'm a lazy bastard. And since school started for me a week ago I have less free time, and more I want to do with it. So I suggest you find another artist, or placeholder graphics for now, and I might do this eventually.

Had to get that off my chest. If it's any consolation, I was bored one night during the summer and made awesome character art for this game in GIMP. Unfortunately it's on the computer in Mexico, and I never uploaded it to photobucket.

That's a bit of a shame! Well if anyone else is up for spriting, then send me some stuff and I'll see who suits the
art style best. Maybe you'd have more incentive if I released a working demo.

I've also remade the enemy attacks. ALL enemy attacks are exclusive special attacks not in zones, meaning you
have to master a new skill for every enemy you fight!

These?

What I'm asking is... would anyone be interested in doing a lot of spriting for this game? When I say a lot I mean a basic
Portal-esque laboratory map which would look minimalistic and stylish and also a tropical beach tileset with lots of bright
colours and an orangey tinge which would compliment sunset backdrops. I'd also need some charsets doing which wouldn't
consist of an awful lot. Just some animated enemies standing still, attacking, being hurt and dying along with a few character
sprites.

There will be the oversized palm trees, some more standard trees and then an assortment of various beach items.  Umbrellas, coconuts, little plastic buckets and shovels, what-have-you.

Please give me a couple days at least.  I have a couple major tests coming up...

Thanks a lot MissingName. Actually, buckets and spades won't be too necessary since it's more of
a classified top-secret island. I need all the spriters, composers and artists I can get!

Not complete or 8-bit yet.

Without the buckets and umbrellas, it looks rather unimaginative.  I think I'll make a crab charaset.

What sort of building materials do you want?  Stone, brick, reeds...?  I'm guessing there's going to be some sort of buildings on the island.

The water is the RTP standard, painstakingly recolored with reference colors from an actual photo of clear blue waters.

This day is one big step for mankind! The battle system went through millions of boring, repetitive test logs, but the outcome is...

IT FULLY WORKS! It 100% works, it's 100% ironed and flattened out bug-wise. I haven't been this proud of myself since god knows when.

It has the potential to be so incredibly complex and offers a stupid amount of customization! Yes!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Anyway... :p

Those palm trees are looking nice! Did you completely sprite them yourself? I'd mainly like shrubbery
and wild plants to fill in gaps. Sand and grass is a must. The plants don't have to be real ones. Use your imagination
if you can. I'm going for a jungle like Jade Cocoon 2 if possible and hopefully the beach will have the same feel to it.

I'd rather it looked atmospheric than happy and lively if you know what I mean. Anyway, great job up to now!

So I was working on my AUTOCAD and got bored.  So I opened up paint and...
High-Res palm trees.

I take a reference picture, lift colors off of it and then draw the object.  I use Irfanview for tinting, darkening, gamma, all sorts of effects...

Let me integrate all of my things together.  Shells, seaweed, coconuts, assorted plants, jungle (do you want a path leading into the jungle?) and maybe some building stuff.  White/grey brick sound good?
I'll post it as soon as it's all together, and you can make suggestions from there.
Title: Re: Tropical Biotechnology RPG *Spriters, artists, composers, come to me!"
Post by: zuhane on October 02, 2009, 09:41:48 AM
That looks great! The best way to describe the overworld is a huge jungle island populated
with plants that have never been seen before. The outskirts of the island are sand and sea, AKA
beach and there are extremely modern-looking building jotted around almost like stations which you
visit for missions. There's gonna be other areas later on, but that's the basic idea of the map.

Could you make the brickwork large and modern if possible? Anyway, keep it up! Thanks a lot!

It's usable... 8-bit.  But it's not done.  Needs more pants (so it won't be just messy dirt and dark, but pretty things there to be happy), a wrecked building set and a continuous jungle.  And that orange tint.

I'm at a loss as to how to make the continuous jungle at the moment and I need to sleep in order to get more reference for the plants.  Bizarre stuff happens in my dreams...

Just a rough picture of what can be done so far...

Post by: SaiKar on October 10, 2009, 03:33:20 PM
Continuous forests are one of the hardest things to draw ever. The best way I have seen it done is to have a few tree trunk sprites that eventually fade up into a textured solid green haze that forms the constrains of the area you can walk through. That's kind of a lousy description, I know. Maybe I can find a screenshot somewhere...

In any event, while the game is cool, I am most impressed by your spriting work. Haven't seen a lot of chipset spriters lately and Lord knows my own works leave something to be desired.

A few complementary items to go along with the chipsets.  Two sliding doors going opposite ways( regular and tinted versions of both) and a fail crab.

I'm majorly impressed with some of those sprites you're throwing out there. The chipsets
look fantastic. To fill up space, you'll probably notice that many foresty chipsets have a kind
of "leafy canopy", which is dark in the middle and then has corners. This leafy canopy can be used
to fill up lots of space. Some grass, rock and moss floor would be good or some grass that eventually fades
into sand. I'm so damn excited to try this chipset out!

As of now, here's what needs doing before the demo's released:

-Need attack/pain poses from Purple.
-Need to finish the first special attack.
-Need to add 2 more Zone Icons (which will be easy).
-Just have to throw together a basic map.
-Need a few graphics doing.

After that, there'll be a demo coming your way. Anyone fancy helping?

FINALLY! I updated the blog with a video and a few pictures just showing the basic mechanics of the battle
system. I'm always waiting for sprites etc, so contact me if you're interested in helping out.

I've also scripted many of the characters and tried to create some interesting personalities! We have a hippie girl, war-obsessed
freak, cenile old man, lots of Bio-terrorists and a talking frog! I've come up with some genuinely amusing plot lines and transcripts
for characters whilst in college, so it should not only be fun to play, but also contain some of that bizarre humour that Invasion of the Sexy
Chimps contains! Feel free to drop some comments on me, you know I always love them. This is also shown on the front page.

Show your interest, get involved! I have no deadlines, no exams, no work, no limits! I'm going to work good and solid on this game
and make it a genuinely enjoyable, refreshing and completely new experience. No visiting towns to get granny's cats off trees, or talking
to the king about a horse that's been possessed or something like that. Just clever, witty humour, fast=paced custom battles, quirky
characters, and a horrific level of customisation available!

Okay, if you can find an existing chipset to serve as a jumping point (Chipsets take eons to make from scratch) and some pictures that portray roughly what you want, I'll see if I can help.

There's a small patch of homemade chipset that I did in the middle. The rest is someone else's chipset.
So feel free to replace all the grass etc. There's also some drawings showing the general idea of what I'd like.

Title: Re: Quasigen Island *Is anyone a decent artist here?*

I'd just use what Lonewolf has for now and make custom chipsets when you really need them (ie. there's literally nothing out there that matches what you need).

But the chip obviously doesn't have everything you need. I can tweak it to add the scientist portraits, electric doors, LCD screen, etc. It'll be a lot easier than starting from scratch, and it'll be at least partly custom. How's that?

Okay, I'm super tired, but I added an LCD screen (Is black okay? I can tone it down if it's standing out too much for you), a lovely bench, a desk, a phone that you'll probably want to use as an event to get on said desk, the scientist portraits, and the certificate. I tried not to add too many colors to the pallet.

Title: Re: Quasigen Island *Is anyone a decent artist here?*
Post by: zuhane on February 15, 2010, 06:07:27 PM
I had to make some modifications to it when it transitioned into forest and sea, but apart from that, it's pretty fine!

Yeah, drenrin, that's looking great! Did you draw it yourself? MissingName, it's up to you how you go about this, since
drenrin's done some cliffs. Maybe you and him can come to an agreement :p

I still need darker coloured grass, along with the tops of the cliffs in the upper layer of the chipset. If you want, you could
remove one of the plants from the upper chipset, and I'll just use it in a charset in my game instead!

More than two hours in the ripe ol' morning!

EDIT: Very cool. I dig the pictures of the key items; makes the game come to life so much more. Too bad you had to have the consumables in a fixed list so they appear even if you don't have any, but RM2K3 has its limitations. The beach chipset looks pretty good after all, especially with the rays of light coming down. When you're thick in the forest, something lighting like this would be neat.

I'm hoping someone can make me a better light pattern. I threw that trash together in a few minutes! :p

I'm thinking of workarounds for the list, like having Hero names, and renaming them as (Empty) if the variable
for the item is 0.

Post by: zuhane on February 23, 2010, 03:20:24 PM
Valiere, you'll be pleased to know that I've fixed it! Items unavailable are displayed as "(Empty)" and when selected,
re-open the selection box.

Does anyone fancy re-designing some menus for me, since they're a bit MS paint-ish?

This first one looks awfully tacky. Feel free to completely re-make it for me if you please:

The second one looks okay, and I like the style. However, the background looks like it could be put together
more neatly, in my opinion:
IMPORTANT: If this one were to be edited, the character boxes, and the fonts and boxes, would have to stay in the exact same place.
It's the actual background which could do with some neatening up. Still, if you did redo it, could you keep the radical art style going?

Thanks!

Glad you approve! Want me to redo the other one? I like the pattern you've done, but I can make it look a bit smoother.

And I can edit the fonts, just not their placement, right?
Title: Re: Quasigen Island *Major update video uploaded!*
Post by: zuhane on February 23, 2010, 11:45:42 PM
You can edit the fonts if you want, but would you be able to send seperate pictures to overlay them?

As you make selections, the words need to be highlighted, you see.

If you can do that, then I'd be more than happy for you to miracle it over again!

Is anyone here significantly good at coding?

I asked Rahl to check out a problem a good few weeks ago, but I reckon he's died from Malaria or something.

Could anyone do me the honour of testing the battle system and telling me
where I could improve the code to reduce the lag slightly? It's rather complex, so
I'd need someone with quite a bit of coding knowledge.

Thank you!

Post by: zuhane on August 17, 2010, 01:29:18 AM
Okay! I've actually done quite a lot of the above. Lots has been converted by me. I'm re-uploading the
chipset with a major load of work taken off. The conversion needs to take place! If someone could do me the
huge liberty of re-drawing the remaining items within this chipset, so that they suit the visual style of the game,
I can release a demo seriously soon! It's one of the few things holding me back. The chipset is ideal and contains
most of my components needed, but the style doesn't look right. It needs to be sharper and more funky, like
the outside chipset. It also needs to really match the whole menu system I have going.

I implore you! Somebody has to be able to do a quick conversion! Anything not there isn't there because it isn't
needed or I've redone it, but there's still stuff that needs doing!

If somebody converts this, the game can be packaged, and a demo on its way!!

Somebody! Please! Thanks! :D

Yeah, basically, I wanna show you my system menu at the moment and stuff, then I need you to
try and think of some cool stats to add to the character himself. Based on the current engine
I'm running, he has HP, MP and Attack. Zone Icons are modified using "Quasigen" that you find.
I feel like the menu has some potential space. I've tried to make some sort of "meter" or "bar"
but I'm not sure what to make it as. Could it be a possible fury bar? If so, how could the game
implement it? I'd like your say!

=========================================================

Surprise! This game does actually have normal points to it. You level up from gaining
exactly 100 EXP. The higher your level, the less EXP enemies disperse upon death.

Levelling again :D

The Tweaks menu allows you to modify your character A LOT. However, we're just
going to go to basic levelling. As standard, it just lets you make your character
a bit stronger.

Here's the level-up menu. Every time you gain a level, you can spend a point on
increasing one of your basic stats. I added a cool feature, so when you have
points to spend, a little message appears on the bottom left and flashes. It's
just little things like that which make a game nice!

Self explanatory.

Thus, MP has increased.

You'll notice that in the actual in-game menu, your max MP has permanently increased.
Took me a while *COUGH* ****ing AGES *COUGH* to do all of this, but it works
and is fully functional. Your character can max out all his stats and reach level
20 now, but it would obviously take months given the difficulty of the current enemies.

However, have you noticed at the top right in the stats box, there's some free space?
What could possibly go in there? You tell me. I need some bright ideas! Also, have you noticed
that there's a white silhouette of Kruz which fills up like a bar. What would you like to see it
do? Some kind of "fury bar" or something?

Re-vamped the text in the RDS. Looks a little nicer now. Might as well let you know :p

Press "0" in-game for an overview of your current character.

Looks great! Very nice to see a CBS battle system, PLUS with a Custom Menu at the same time!
As for ideas with the bar, I was thinking something like this:
How about it fills up gradually as your levels do? And then, at a certain level, your class changes? And then, choosing a specific class add more to your stats, like more HP, Attack, etc. If you're not already using the Class thing.

Your game is looking hot, bro. Include Zaragath as a hidden easter egg boss. (or something like that)  If you do that I'll add something related to your game as an easter egg in Asiyla.

It'd be pretty awesome too add their armour or one of their attacks!

Post by: zuhane on November 29, 2010, 09:27:29 PM
It's that time of the year where I actually update the thread. I've given the game a massive graphical
overhaul! It's looking quite beautiful if I may say so. I've made a 100% fully functional, glitch-free item
menu, healing item system, health and MP bar and given many menus graphical overhauls and remakes.
The game's looking a little like The World Ends With You... or at least having a very similar atmosphere.
That makes me happy :)

Anyway, I'm droning on (no pun intended). I'd like it if someone could possibly do face art for... every character
in the game... if possible. At the moment, that's not too much to ask, but I'd need someone who'd be willing to
carry it on and not quite half-way through the process. As for now, I just need facial art which fits in the game for
speech scenes and battles for Kruz, Mr. Henderson and a Drone. Nothing much for now. I'd like a consistent style
which looks quite jagged and surreal if possible. Here's my rough versions which need touching up. If anyone's interested
and could showcase a few styles to me, I'd be eternally kissing your arse!! It's getting serious now. This isn't
something I'm ever going to stop creating. I've been making it for 1.5 years, and it's going to keep being made until
it's really polished and fun and well made. Yeah. Here are the characters:

The Drone:

Kruz Kalskovsky:

Mr. Henderson:

Any rough designs would be greatly appreciated. I need help deciding on an art style for the game!

Title: Re: My RPG ~ Quasigen Island ~ Character designs and art
Post by: zuhane on November 30, 2010, 03:31:22 PM
The failure screen was a rough concept that's been remade now. The gameover screen's very different, but
I see where you're coming from. The actual character art wouldn't be shown in facesets, but as pictures which
swoop in when people talk, anime style! It gives you a better picture of the character and makes it feel like a more
engaging coversation!

What have I been up to, you ask? You probably aren't asking that, but Hell, I'm just gonna go on
ahead and tell you all anyway!!!!!!!!!!

Behold:

==============WATCH THIS VIDEO================
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iUzOxcdjeOU
==============WATCH THIS VIDEO================

-I added the ability to freeze your time bar as an upgrade. The graphics, coding and sounds took about 5 hours to
fully compile.
-I've added new stats to the game including coolness, armour and fulfilment.
-Kruz can now gain EXP, level up to the max level of 20, gain points to spend and max out every stat properly and use
all of this in-game.
-I've spruced up the main menu, health bars for enemies, Kruz's health/MP box, Zone Icon menu, Level-Up menu,
Quasigen spending menu and much more!
-I've remade the dodging animation into a more comic-like, fluid explosion when you find out you've successfully dodged!
-I've fixed three Zone Icons so they work perfectly.
-I added an animation for the Raw Power Zone Icon when you use it.
-I've completely drawn all the tiles for the Laboratory and sprited most of it. Some was done by others :D
-I've added some in-game puzzles.
-I've made a menu so you can level up and also upgrade Zone Icons.
-Enemies can be cut in half with enough strength. I mean, seriously, how cool is that!?

So, yeah. I'm really tired. I've worked on this game for about 8 hours today. It's really getting there!!!! I'm going nuts!!!! <3

I don't suppose anyone is interested in doing a little art still, are they? The dodge confirmation screen is going to have Kruz

Started on the first official in-game dungeon instead of just adding to battle mechanics! The chipset
you see is about 90% sprited by me. The other 10% is also custom, but sprited by
Charasians as a request. It's coming along nicely :D

So I've compiled a list of everything that needs completing before a demo is released, and I must say,
I've been shredding through it like crazy! I've given the menu a professional overhaul, and everything's
just starting to feel incredibly polished and well made. All menus are animated, levels contain animated scenery,
sound effects, character voice acting, and various interactive objects like you'd find in Mario Galaxy. Exams
are coming to an end, so this is just plain sailing. Anyway, just wanted to post a few updates!!

Just redesigned my debug room and neatened it all up. The men in hazmat suits are animated and were drawn
by me!

Try out the new character faces, courtesy of Val!

The new and final version of the main menu. The top-right shows your attack points, max HP and max MP.
You have your selections on the left side. The bleeper at the bottom left moves more rapidly and makes louder
noises if you're near a secret. Pretty nifty! The bottom left shows the 9 significant storyline things that need
unlocking, much like your 7 crystals Zelda equivalent but with 9 different rare bacterial cultures. The stats menu
available is what I'd like to show off!

It took an obscene amount of time and ruling equipment to make these numbers charsets instead of pictures.
It's completely 100% removed all menu lag and looks much better. The background moves too. I used a rather
complicated formula which instantly displays all character stats with no lag or errors! :D

Yet again, demonstrating Val's brilliant artistic skills here with this monster! Voice acting is now included, so the enemy
will say demeaning things when it hits you :P I showed this game to the Voice Acting Guild, and I've had a stupid amount
of auditions. Nothing like an ego boost! Haha :D

And of course, the game is still 100% custom. Every single resource has been made by me or as a request by one of the lovely
people on this forum!

Sup guys! At the moment, I'm working on tearing down any type of monotony in my game.
I think repetitive fights can be a massive killer. Is there anything people would like to see in
my game to spice it up? At the moment, I've divided it into subsections and keep featuring bits
of:

-Battles
-Zelda-style puzzles
-Clue-finding puzzles
-Humorous dialogue
-Touhou-style dodging games
-Chipset variations and animated tiles to break things up
-Secret items
-Item balloons. They float around and pop when you press the number on them.
-Collectivity (I know that something people find hugely satisfying in games is gaining something
of great rarity which allows them to upgrade their characters)

Can anyone else suggest any ideas of what I could use to break areas up? At the moment, I'm trying
to constantly implement all of these features to keep it fresh. Any types of puzzles or anything that
people would like to see?

Puzzles are always good in an RPG. Resident Evil style puzzles would be awesome. They're really really hard, but then after you complete it, that's when you notice there's a little diagram on the wall showing exactly what to do. ^.^

Game looks great so far, man. Keep up the good work! It's a definite download from me when the demo's out.

I'm going to take advantage of that bot post to say that I still love this, and it looks like it's coming along splendidly. Val's artwork looks spectacular.

And hey, I know I sorta bailed on you before, but I've been getting back into this sort of thing recently, and I may be able to help out with graphics again. At the very least, I could have a go at some voice acting.

Pahaha! I'm glad this gold salesman is so interested in my game. I've also been having a go at spriting myself, and I
was pleasantly surprised with my work. Still, I'd love some more sprites off you, Uber. They're awesome.

Just a few updates about the game!

Things are coming along smoothly, and all Zone Icons have finally been thought out. This game, like all of my
crappy games, will feature a chimp. However, this is no ordinary chimp. This is HABANERO the Mexican chimp!
What's better than a really fun game? A really fun game with a chimp as your companion, obviously!! Try and spot
the Habanero Zone Icon.

The Habanero Zone Icon is the most powerful in the game. It was a very low occurrence rate and high difficulty to grab.
It can only be grabbed once in battle. However, once grabbed, a manic chimp will disrupt enemy attacks, hit the enemies,
give you gifts and assist you in zones for the duration of the fight. A mighty Zone Icon indeed!!

Rather than working on extensive stuff at the moment, I've been working on stuff that will make the game playable.
As you can imagine, the annoying bit is making the original battle system. It's going to be repeatedly copy-pasted and
edited for every future battle, so it has to be absolutely flawless, glitch-free, lag-free and bursting with flair before I
can replicate the battle events.

At the moment, I'm looking for a really clear, plain and well-projected voice. As you walk through the labs, a bell
will ring and notifications will be spoken out. If anybody interested in doing the receptionist voice, please send me
some voice clips via PM and I'll see which suits the role the best. Here are some example lines which you can send
me if possible:

"Can all staff members watching Two and a Half Men please stop watching Two and a Half Men and then work instead?"
"Janet to sector 44. I repeat, Janet to sector 42."
"To ensure work safety, can all staff members please remember to wear chainmail? Just kidding!"

Oh, almost forgot! I've been spriting away, and I finally converted an A4 size drawing into a sprite that'll fit in RPG
Maker, so I'm chuffed with myself. The drone enemies weren't drawn by me, but the blue armour, robots, slug things
and giant boss were all made by me. I'm getting alright at this spriting malarkey! The boss creature is called the great
Cthukklu, and squirts kerosene out of its huge trunk. Its colossal weight means it can't walk.

Hey, you can always audition with your accent anyway. The center point of the game is humor,
so having a hard-to-understand accent over the intercom might promote a giggle or two! I'll update the last
post with some required lines!

A friend and I are now developing Quasigen Island in XNA, hoping to eventually get this thing on Steam! :D We'll keep you updated.
If this thing gets bigger than we expect, we'd love to recruit some of you for artwork and commission you! We won't use any artwork
made for the rm2k3 version in the final game, and if we did, we'd ask full permissions from people and also discuss payment options, so
don't worry about it! This is so exciting! :D
