HTML Download Counter

I need help with how to make a HTML download counter like the kind that is used in the resources of Charas. You know when you have a pic and it says downloaded ### times. Anyone who helps I thank you in advance.

Im not sure, but I think its a PHP program that tracks whenever a file is downloaded, adds it, then displays it as an image or as a numeric value in this case.... as for how that works, I've no idea..
