Well, most of the music I listen to is Japanese, so I can recommend some of that I suppose.

*thinks*..let's see;
Malice Mizer
Matters on the album really, since they all have differant sound, and went through several vocalists.
I'd go with songs like 'Bel air' or 'Shiroi hada ni kuruu ai to kanashimi no rondo' for first listens to them.
This band tended to apply more classical instruments and elements in their music, which in my opinion is a plus. Their last album Bara No Seidou is probably their best, though most people like Merveilles a lot because the album pleased a wide range of preferances.
My favorite band, and likely worth opening an ear to at least. *shrugs*

L'Arc~en~Ciel (kinda well known overseas though)
I haven't heard a lot of them, but I'd recommend 'Driver's High', 'Dune' or 'Shout at the Devil' to check out.
If you watch Full Metal Alchemist, than you've already heard 'Ready Steady Go!' by them.
I've only recently been listening to there stuff, but I find it rather appealing.

Some other misc bands/artists and songs that might be worth checking out;
Dir en Grey - Cage, Garden
Hide - dice, misery
Moi dix Mois - dialogue symphonie, front et baiser

A few bands of different languages u should consider.

 The Pillows

The pillows are an aweswome Japanese rock/pop band. If u have ever watched furi kuri u would know em. I recommend listening to 'rid on shooting star', 'hybrid rainbow' and 'runner's high'.

 O-Zone

An awesome finnish band. They do dance type of music. Sweet as. Check out a song known 'Numa Numa'. Very awesome.

 Oomph!

Oomph! is a German rock band who are very cool. U have to definately listen to 'Auf Augen'.

I have to concur on this.
'Subhuman' and 'Lesser Hampster in Blue' are two of my favorites by them. 'Hybrid Rainbow' is great as well, as you noted.

Ugh, I hate japanese bands. Everytime I hear ones song I end up hearing a rift from a classic band like Cheap Trick.

Lessee, you got Rammstein, everyone knows about... There was this one indian band that was pretty cool, if I remember the name I'll tell ya.

Listen to Hermética, an argentinian heavy metal band. Rata Blanca is also good, and Carajo too.
