Hellspawn: Tales of Anguish
« on: August 19, 2005, 09:29:33 PM »
---

Rain drops fell and bounced lightly on the corpse laying in the street. The dead body of this dead man lay face down, riddled with bullets, the victimn of a savage drive by shooting. His dark crimson blood gushed from his wounds and into a sewer drain in the sidewalk. The blood swirled with the rain water and poured away like a river. People rushed to his aid, only to realize they were too late. Others look away and cover their nose with a handkerchief. Many took out their cell phones and madly dialed for 911. Soon, red and blue lights appear. The police. Then the ambulance. And somewhere in between the two came the media. The headlines read "Local Community Man shot dead."

"The car barely stopped. They just drove right through and shot him."

"He aint never done nothing to no one."

"...It was a black car and the windows were really tinted."

"He didn't even see it coming..."

"...He was a young promising man. Never missed a Sunday..."

"...They shot him 13 times, 8 bullets to side of his head and 5 in the back. They had no mercy..."

"So much evil in the world..."

...
...
...

He was an active citizen in his community. He left behind a wife whom he just married 2 years ago. He had a good reputation with everybody. He will be missed.

But this isn't even half of his story...

His true struggle begins in a land beyond mortal reach. A land where no one wishes to end up. That is, if you can truly even call it a land at all. Here begins the struggle of a misplaced soul...

Turn past the corner of death, into burning pits of agony and despair...

Where the vices of mankind are so superfluous that they take a solid tangible form...

Where the respect for life simply ceases to exist.

Where the only roads are paved with living corpses, crushed skulls, and good intentions...

A land where half the people here may end up, and the lucky other half may simply end up lost on the way there...

Behold... a story, not for the faint of heart.

For this story, will only go by one name. Let it's words burn into your mind, for it shall one day be the RPG that changes your life, for better, or for worse...

About the Game:

The game will have a wide cast of characters. And by this I don't just mean playable characters. While playable characters are important to the story, there are also several other NPCs with their own background stories and an equal importance to the story. These characters don't need to be revealed right now.

The main character and hero of the game, if he can be called that, is basically the guy you see in the screenshots (Although, he doesn't always look like that throughout the story). Throughout the game you will also temporarily switch control to other distant characters so you can get a feel for certain side plots going on at the same time. Before the end of the game, all characters will have met each other.

After all the opening cutscenes, the game begins with the hero at the mercy of Hell, just like every other tormented soul. However, an Arch Angel notices our hero and beckons him to crawl through the hordes of the damned.

After reaching the Angel, he recieves equipment, information for staying alive, and some minor training against the demonic forces. The Arch Angel introduces himself as Cygnus, guardian of wayward spirits. The hero has no name, and his memories were stolen by Satan upon entering Hell (but they eventually come back slowly throughout the course of the game, and little things about his past are revealed). So Cygnus gives him a name, and then takes him to the River of Acheron (an entry point into the first ring of Hell). Through here, Cygnus will guide and fight alongside the Hero for a short while.

Cygnus explains, that in order for the Hero to escape from Hell, he will have to journey deep into the very center of it. You see, as one journeys deeper into hell, things become darker and more negative. If one reachs the very bottom of Hell, the negativity there is so dark, that no existence can possibly manifest it, so instead, the Divine Universe compensates by switching everything over to a positive scale, which means you would suddenly pop up in the most positive point of the kingdom of Heaven (rumored to be located on the distant flipside of Hell)

However, this means that the journey is brutally difficult. Few have escaped Hell in the entire span of Eternity. Going to the center of Hell means you must pass through unspeakable damnations, the Seven Deadly Sins, and ultimately Satan himself. Many would rather give up than experience such torment.

At this point, Cygnus gives you the option to give up the game and end it right there if you are not up to it. But if you consciously choose to go forward, there will be much waiting for you.

The font came with my computer so I don't know where I got it.

Anything resembling a Demo could still be a bit far off. I still have to finish an entire database of items, monsters and then moves for each character, not to mention animations, etc... It's gonna be a lot of work. But I wanted to let people know this project was in development.

 :eyes: ...  eww?

:p

Anyway, I love your game so far, definatly original, very well thought out, and it looks pretty sweet.

Only one very small detail that I can find that may need some changing (I'm good at finding the little stuff :p). Anyway, in your forest, the one with the blades of grass housing the souls of those who commited suicide, well depending on the size of the forest, there would have to be billions and billions of blades of grass, not to mention trees, moss, and all that other good stuff. Anyway, I don't think that many people have commited suicide.

Hmm, according to this little school book that I was forced to carry around last year, there are more people alive today than have ever died (which I personally think is a bunch of BS). So yeah, I doubt enough people could have commited suicide to fill up that forest with grass.

Like I said before though, thats just a very small detail, your game looks great. So good luck :) I'll be looking forward to your demo however long it takes to come out :D

Hell Yeah! Just recovered all my old rm2k/3 games from my 10 year old, broken laptop hard drive that had been formatted and had a new OS installed on it. Oh, and I did all of this from my phone. WIN

As you play through the game the Metaphysics of the Hell Universe are explained in ways that justify little things like this. After a while you wouldn't expect things to work the same way as in the real world. The population of hell, while definite, is still too large of a number to count by anyone who is not a God.

One of the things the game addresses is the fact that the concept of time doesn't exist, and instead, everything either happens simultaneously or doesn't happen at all. Therefore, when a person from any time period loses their soul to the devil, their soul is sent to a point of existence outside of normal time, and it sits there consumed by Hell. Dying isn't the only way people lose their souls, they also lose them by selling them to the devil or falling so far into sin that they are mistaken for demons. In such cases, their bodies continue living in the real world under the influence of demons while their souls are tormented in hell.

You'll also learn that the status of the solid Body is independant of the soul's overall health. In hell you'll find people who look chopped up, sliced, crushed, etc, but their bodies are still animated and moving, simply because the soul is still intact. This is why characters can take massive brutal beatings and still walk around as if it were nothing. No one can really "die" in Hell. At one point, one man is ripped into millions of shreds and pieces and still remains alive, even though he is useless in that state. The equivalent of "death" is consumption, which means a creature takes your soul out of your body and traps it inside himself to increase his power. A damaged soul will be unable to defend himself from this.

Looks pretty good, though i agree with the whole "blade= guy who killed self" thing is dumb. How about just the trees or something, but blades of grass seems greatly out of proporson (not sure on the spelling of that last word)

Interesting, most interesting. This will definitly be good unless of course you mess up the dialogue...but from what I've read so far, everything seems good.

The dialogue won't be messed up. It will be spell checked and grammar checked by humans and machines (a lot the major dialogue has been written in microsoft word first). I'm also going to go through every text box in the game to make sure nothing gets cut off or whatever. And everything the characters say will make sense and sound good (and it would sound like something their personalities would say too).

As for the Forest of Suicide, thats just the way it is. It may be hard to believe that one could make a forest with the souls of everyone who will ever kill themselves, but thats just what you see in Hell. There may be many more things that are hard for you to believe. There is a Desert of Ashes where the sand is composed entirely of cremated human ashes. The entire river of Acheron is made entirely of blood from human victims (and it is a pretty deep river, it goes downward for miles and miles, and at the very bottom there are piles of drowned corpses skewered with spikes, filled with rocks and with trapped souls inside).

Eitherway, it doesn't matter if you believe that stuff or not. It's just a part of the story.

Alright, just curious, which souls become the big trees, and which souls have to suttle for blades?
