Funny, whenever I'm asked "What were you thinking" ... it has nothing to do with fire...Instead My thoughts always trail back to...ummm, wtf! I don't know!

seriously, whoever DOES know what they were thinking?

Final Thought: If you have a potato cannon, soak a potato in lighter fluid (or a certain janitorial compound which I forget at the moment) and fire at anything. Should spontaneously burst into flame.

Not all potato launchers have spark gaps or propane injections, and they don't need camera flashes either. But if they did, it certainly wouldn't be "spontaneous".

Yeah, I figured I'd jump in at the end here.

Q: Why do you guys do stupid things?
A: Its all related to puberty.

There is a chemical imbalance in the brains of adolescents that impairs their judgement. It's just an explanation as to why your a dumbass. Of course, just because your a dumbass by nature, doesn't mean I will make an exception when deciding your fate with the rest of the jury.

If your parents are shouting at you, "What were you thinking!?" then its pretty safe to assume that this chemical imbalance had a part in your actions.

Dude.. Thats just low..

What about sky diving, in my book jumping out of a plane is stupid. You can't say all sky divers are going through puberty. Just because  you think something is stupid, doesn't mean it is. If no one ever played with fire, you'd be outside naked chasing a skunk with a rock trying to kill it for food. Then you couldn't cook it because there's no such thing as fire because everyone thought it was stupid to use it.

What kind of world would we live in if no one took any risks, it'd be WAY too boring. When a parent yells something like "What were you thinking", its just a useless expresion because they don't even care. If you would try to explain it to them, they would interupt you before you were done and try and tell you what you were thinking. You learn through experiance, if you do something thats stupid, you're not going to do it again. People at all ages do stupid stuff, its not just young teenagers that are going through "the change".

Fire, at least for me, isn't just like lighting a fire then going "hehe" only to do it over again for no reason. I use fire to destroy objects I hate. Sitting around a bon fire is more entertaining to me then sitting in front of the tv eating potatoe chips. I use fire works to celebrate special occasions. And sometimes It's just interesting to watch. Really, a TV is just a bunch of lights coming out of a box, well a fire is a spectrum of lights too brought on by chemical reactions. I could go on and on, but I think you get the point by now.

So in conclusion, don't assume just because someone likes fire and you don't, that they are going through puberty.

Look, I can burn all the extra fuzzes off my sock :)  :jumpin:

Well, I went googling to back up my declaration, but instead found out that I was a little off.

So what causes this addiction to risky behavior? Doctors are mapping the teen brain and searching for answers. They're using magnetic resonance imaging tests to examine the issue more closely.

Scientists used to think the human brain stopped growing at age 12, but now they've found the teen cranium is actually incomplete — sorely lacking in the frontal lobe area, where rational decisions are made and warnings are given. It is now believed that the brain doesn't totally develop until age 25.

"So the teen years are a time for risk-taking, of trying a lot of different things, of seeing what will work and what won't work, and it's the way that nature uses to optimize the brain in later years," said Dr. Jay Geidd, who is heading the study.

Quote taken from http://abcnews.go.com/2020/story?id=1387316

I was associating overall development with puberty. While chemical balance does play a role in bad decision making, along with peer pressure, trauma, overconfidence, etc, etc, it was this news broadcast I was thinking of when I made that post. I saw a report on this earlier in the year, or was it last year, but I guess they are just now rewriting an article on it.

But when I was referring to the stupid things teens do, I meant more along the lines of irresponsible or dangerous things:
- stealing your parents car, going for a joyride, and wrecking it,
- most of these X-TREME  stunts that end up with a hospital bill ,
- and, yes, lighting yourself on fire and going "Huh, huh... cooool. Ow ow ow ow ow ow ow ow ow WHY DOES IT BURN!??"

It doesn't mean that you are predetermined to do said stupid stunt, but that you are prone to make the poor not-fully-thought-out decision to do said stunt.

edit: I might as well add to this list. There was a report more recently about some new trend/fad/whatever going around in schools: choking/hanging yourself till you pass-out. And who are the morons performing this stunt to get a little pleasure?
T E E N S. Needless to say, more than one moron has hung him/herself and died.

I would not be surprised if someone on this forum came up and said something along the lines of "Yeah, but they were doing it wrong..." and proceed with the proper procedure to nearly killing yourself.

You'll have to excuse me if I think that most teens are just stupid, but that seems to be the path most chosen by your peers. I should note that I'm not revealing my true feelings on the matter to keep the peace.

edit2: Dragonblaze, you are definately not the person who should be coming to the defense of teens.

Well if you hold the can of air duster right, you can make it freeze whatever you're spraying. Otherwise the air that comes out of it is flamible. So I got a flame with the lighter, sprayed tworeds the paper, and I had my own little flame thrower! Then I when the paper was starting everything else on fire, I turned the can to make it freeze everything, so I had frozen burnt paper, it was fun

I hope you realize that you played with fire inside a building. You will undoubtedly be a news story at which I scoff, laugh, and add to my list.

Who can blame them, school is worse then prison. You're locked up in a room all day, you're not allowed to go to the bathroom when you want, you're forced to work, you can't be 2 seconds late, and you're basically not even counted as a citizan when in school.

Seriously though, that is pretty stupid, I've never heard of anyone doing that, so you can't say teens are stupid because of that.

OMG, I played with fire inside a building, I must be so stupid! .. I hope you realize that half of what I said there isn't true. There's a differance between being stupid with fire, and just having some harmless fun. I held a wraper about the size of a fingure nail with a paper clip and lit it on fire, and I blew it out before it was hardly even burnt.

And WTF, you were a teen less then a year ago! Birthdate jan 2, 1985? You're only 20, and unless you forgot how to count, thats right after 19.

I'm sorry, I just get a little pissed off every time someone tries to put someone down just because of their age. I see people all the time saying "oh, you're only 12, you're not old enough to understand rpg maker". Then all the time out in the real world, people don't even treat younger people fairly simply because they haven't been around as long. Most of these times these incidents have no basis on the actual person.

In case you didn't figure this out already, teens aren't the only ones who play with fire, I know people well in their 40s that are worse then me. So don't try and say its because our brains are "under developed" or we're goign through puberty. That has little to nothing to do with it.

All my decisions are well thought out, and thus far I have very little regrets on any of the decisions I have made. And what about the people that are 30 that go out and shoot people then in court they say, "I don't know what happened, I guess I didn't think it through". I saw a court show just yesterday that was very simular, though it didn't deal with murder.

Thats just another form of prejuctice. I could say the same about an ethnic group or a gender. Here's a hard fact for you, people don't automatically get smarter when they reach 25, 20, 18, or whatever. There are stupid people at every age, I tend to find people around your age to be pretty stupid. Getting piss drunk, driving while intoxicated. Watch a few episodes of Cops, most of the stupid people aren't teenagers.

I'm not even going to bother replying to any more of you're thoughts containing this topic. Truth is, you can find all the things on google that says teens are stupid, and I can find just as many things that counter that bias opinion.

So your claiming to have done something that you haven't. I hope your not trying to impress anybody.

You brought my age into this, not me. In fact its obvious that you went looking for my age. And not once did I exclude myself from "stupid teen syndrome". I did my share of stupid stuff, one of which is similar to above link.

You seem to have skipped over this very portion of my post, as well as that which outlines the scientific study. I am NOT saying this development of the brain accounts for all irresponsible or dangerous activities performed by all people, but only those who are still developing.

Again, you are trying to turn this into an issue of me being arrogant based on my age. My age has nothing to do with my being arrogant.

And, come on! Calling prejudice!? My statement is supported by FACTS and observations made and agreed upon by many people. You can't even say I'm generalizing my statement, because I admit that "most teens are just stupid". Note the room for exclusion from that comment.

I would like to see such evidence. You should form a rebuttal with more than unconsionable accusations.

It seems obvious to me from personal experience that most teens are stupid, and spiteful, and selfish. What happens is that non-stupid spiteful selfish kids like me get picked on by the majority.

And fire is fun. *Nodnodnod*

Dude Drighton, you basically said that people who like playing with fire have underdeveloped brains and are going through puberty. Then you say that a group of people that you don't belong to is stupid, wait let me correct that, MOST of the people in that group are stupid. Sure, you didn't say you didn't belong to that group, but do you really need to? If I said something like people from Indonesia are stupid, do I have to say that I'm not from Indonesia for it to take effect? I don't know if you meant to insult almost every member at chars by saying that teens are stupid, but the way you said it sounds like it.

Now from my observations, yes, there are a lot of stupid teens, but most are responsible and inteligent enough to make good decisions. Maybe about 5-10% of the teens I know do stupid things like drugs and smoking, and maybe 20% drink. Of the 1000+ students in my school, I think about 5 get picked on, and thats because they've done stuff to deserve it. I don't think I've had one person in any of my classes skip or even been tardy.

So at least from my observations, just because you've been on the earth 13-19 times since its rotated around the sun doesn't mean you're any more irrational or stupid then any other age.

Unless you put yourself on a higher plane of conciousness than the majority, at which time they lose their humanity in your eyes and you don't have to worry about that anymore.
