Monster Stats
« on: February 06, 2006, 02:15:04 AM »
...how do you set your monsters?

Reason I ask is because I'm totally redoing the monsters in my game. And I'm curious - has anyone done the same? If so, how do they set their stats?

Just wondering.

EDIT: I'm NOT asking 'how do you do it'. I'm asking 'how you do it'. Ok, bad wording. I mean...not 'what do you to do to it' but 'how much stats do you give them'. There, that's better.

That's...not what I'm asking. I'm sorry if it wasn't clear; I'll edit my post.

I meant what do you give them for stats? On average? Bleh, hard to word it to make it be what I want.

Don't be a jerk, Meiscool.

Really, there is no choice way to set stats. Probably, the best way would be to imagine what the heroes' levels might be around the time you fight that monster, then set its stats accordingly. If you had a monster with 500 ATK as the first boss, it'd have to have low SPD or DEF to compensate, or give the heroes a defense up spell or something.

I usually make Defence monsters (Monsters with very low speed but high attack defene/hp) Magic monsters (high MP and Magic, low attack and defence) and quick monsters (monsters that have generally more speed then all your party members, meaning they hit you before you can hit them, but die in about one hit from you)

By making different variations of those monsters, you've pretty much got all you need.

I have wondered this for a while as well... sure, make high stats/low stats and all that... but how high is high? Is 100 high or low?

I know it depends on the strength on the hero, but... okay, what level would a party of heroes need to be to defeat a monster with 100 in all stats? 200? 500? And so on.

Basically, what's high for the beginning of the game? What's high for the end-game?

Well I don't really use the DBS anymore, but just look at the default monsters to figure it out.

Well the best way to do it is to test the battle. Set your hero stats to the stats they would most likely be in in the game at that point, and test the battle. If they take too much away, lower the attack, if you hardly can damage them, lower the defence. Generally I make the monsters at the beginning of the game really easy (1-2 hit kills). Every "quest" you go on, I bump up the hits by 2 or 3. Enemies at the begining of my game take away enough damage so you have to use a potion before the boss, but not enough so that you'll die in a battle granted you watch your hp. Soon I move on to you have to heal at least one character after/during every battle, then by the end of the game you'll have to heal you're characters over and over again to keep them alive in a battle.

Every game is set up differant, so its hard to say what the stats should be set at. For example, maybe you start off with 600 hp and can take away 100 when attacking, well I could say, set the monsters hp to 140 in the beginning. But then lets say you start off with 50 hp and take away about 10 each attack. 140 would be way too much at the start of the game. So yeah, we can't suggest any actual numbers. Anyway, like I said earlier, the best way is to guess and check by testing the monsters in battle.

My stats are all messed up in my game. The highest any stat goes is 100 (opposed to 999), except hp and mp. But the way I have my cbs set up is that when the character is at level 20 (highest level) and has 100 atk, he'll take away 9999 from average enemies, and around 3000 from enemies with 100 def. But I could set the defence to 999999 and really throw the player off :p. Yeah, with my cbs, I have all the algorithms translated into equations, so if I want to find how much damage or something will be delt, I just have to put the stats into the formula and I'll get a result, meaning I don't have to guess and check anymore :)

Lol, don't worry, I'm afraid of respect lists too.
