Final Fantasy Reminiscence
« on: April 15, 2006, 12:09:00 AM »
Let me say first that I'm new here. I registered a few days ago but I'm having some problems. I already read the rules in the games section and the first set of rules. I wanted to go to the Welcome board but I cannot access the main page of the forum. Is the server down? I was only able to get here through the main page of the site. This happened right after I read the email and registered. I thought I'd might as well post my game first since it's the only place I could get to.

As you already know my game is called Final Fantasy Reminiscence. Yes it's a Final Fantasy Fan Game. Yes it uses the Final Fantasy name. I don't care. I don't expect more people to play my game because of the name. I'm just here to put a good fangame out there on the net. The only GOOD game out there is Endless Nova. That game was awesome. Fan games like this are either non-existent or they suck. The only other games out there are Crystal Wings, Time and Again, Shattered Lands, Hunter’s Joy, and Chaos Shadows. There is another one out there but I forgot it’s name. We need more good ones. The name is too good to waste.

As for the story, It centers on a girl named Alexis (I did NOT steal the name from Chaos Shadows). For as long as she can remember she's lived under the ocean at the Eros military base. Along with her, thousands of refugees are there to escape a war going on above at the surface. Life isn't all bad though. Throughout the years the station has expanded and advanced itself. There are schools, stores, vacation spots, parks, and a huge amount of residential areas. Living there is like living somewhere on the surface.

As for Alexis, she is a shy girl. She has unusually crimson red hair that she was naturally born with. Even though she's pretty and very athletic, she doesn't have many friends. See she suffers from a traumatic event in her childhood that she barely remembers. All that she can remember from her past is two people showing her a beautiful sunset. Her father says that she saw her mother and her mom's new boyfriend before the mom ditched the family. She does sometimes have nervous breakdowns when she's forced to do something that she doesn't want to do. Nonetheless, she's very curious. She likes to investigate things and to find out the truth. When she's eighteen, the time when you're allowed to see the surface world, she wants to study to be a criminal investigator or a journalist.

One day, after a series of unfortunate events, she gets pushed down an airshaft. While looking for a way out she comes across the shaft to the President of the Eros Company himself. Before shouting out for help she overhears his conversation with a bunch of shady looking men. The president says that everyone on the station under the age of eighteen is actually part of "Project Red Scorpion." Each of the kids holds some kind of gene that lets them rapidly produce and manipulate energy in the process called "magic." He says that the entire station was built to suppress this energy process so his company can study them. He also says that when the kids are eighteen and they try to leave the station, they are immediately killed and dissected.

Disgusted and horrified Alexis tries to crawl away but stops to listen to the rest after she thinks she hears her father. She can't see him but believes it to be him. He says that Alexis's real parents are constantly on television planning to sue Eros in the biggest case of the century, along with thousands of other parents. Accused of hostage and murder, Eros's stocks have been plummeting. Eros has had to steal money from the real government adding an even bigger charge. Alexis's parents were alive and looking for her for years.

Alexis finally gets out of the air vent when two guards attack her. Fortunately a strange elephant/dog boy named Dexter saves her. He freezes the guards in time and helps her escape. He says that he used to be human but now lives downstairs in the labs. He also says that he has the power to time travel, but for only ten minutes forward or backward. After she asks, he leads her to one of the computers in the labs. As it turns out, Alexis's real parents have been looking for her for her entire life and that they were about to get search warrants for the entire station. Alexis and Dexter escape back to the station with newfound resolve.

Alexis and Dexter become fast friends. They spent everyday looking at the glass ceilings to the ocean, waiting to escape. Unfortunately they get captured. Eros planned to "trash the evidence" before the military came. Alexis and Dexter are about to die when the actor playing Alexis's father helps them escape. He gets shot doing so (He doesn't die) but he did earn the trust of Alexis. Alexis and Dexter get surrounded when Dexter unleashes a huge wormhole. Decimating the soldiers. Because of the force, a hole in the station was ripped open and the station filled with water. This meant that a lot of people were going to drown.

Desperate, he opens another worm hole, much smaller than the first. If he hole is small it causes time travel. If it is big, it rips you to pieces. Alexis gets pulled into the hole along with Dexter. She tries to hold on to him but they break apart from each other. Alexis falls through time and space until she finally wakes up.

Alexis lands in a luxurious bedroom high in a palace. She looks outside to not only see the sky but to see a beautiful city. (It looks like Paris back during the 1850's.) Not only is it filled with humans but also it's filled with fantastic creatures that she's never seen before. There are airships and dragons flying around in the sky and she looks up to see two beautiful crystal towers.

Soon the maid comes in calling her Alexandria. Alexis confused gets into an argument with her. A blonde girl comes in and stops the fight. She takes Alexis through the palace and has her help run some errands.

Soon Alexis and the girl end up at a Waterfall in the mountains when the girl finally confronts her. Alexis explains her situation and the girl replies. The girl is named Reisalia Gareth, Princess of the Kingdom of Vailles and the heir to the throne. She says that her friend Alexandria Beomonte was staying the night at the palace. Alexandria is a famous heiress to the Beomonte Mythril fortune.

Alexis learns that she landed thousands of years into the future. Reisalia tells Alexis about the world of Ivalice and everthing there is to know, and also talks about Alexandria. Alexandria survived an assassination attempt against her about a month ago. This left her with amnesia, so Reis has been taking care of her. She asks Alexis to pretend to be Alexandria for a while. Reis thinks about her kingdom first. She realizes that if someone manages to disappear from the palace of one of the strongest kingdoms in the world, right under the noses of the Dragoon Military, the people would go into a state of panic.

Alexis agrees. For the next few days Alexis pretends to be Alexandria when she comes across a remarkable discovery. A race that looks exactly like Dexter called Nu Mou exists. She also sees up close that Time Magic exists. After asking around she learns Dexter is alive and in this world to. He landed about 21 years ago in the past, now becoming a famous Alchemist. He has been studying time travel and traversing the globe "looking for someone." With the permission of the princess, Alexis uses Alexandria's money and resources to find Dexter so she can go back home.

Okay this is the main plot. I also have a big political subplot to go with it.

The world of Ivalice has always been on the brink of a world war. There are four superpowers: The Kingdom of Vailles, the Republic of St. Gaston, The Annelist Coalition, and the Raiten Empire. Each of these nations has there own distinct cultures, beliefs, religions, attitudes towards non-Hume races, and views towards everything magic related. What is most important is the discovery of the Magicite Islands. Filled to the brink with magical crystals. What is more intriguing it that each of the islands is freely floating in the water with more appearing every day. This suggests that they could be part of a much bigger continent. Every nation is expressing imperialism to try and take over these islands. The Kingdom of Vailles wants to study the geography and the biology of the islands. St. Gaston wants it for the money. The Raiten Empire is suffered from a huge economic depression a few years ago, and the coalition wants it for religious purposes. The Annelists banned magic in their nations because of their belief in knowledge, wisdom, and strength. Also, the islands hold a disturbing secret. Rumors are spreading that the Nedri, an evil race from thousands of years ago live today somewhere in the islands.

Okay, that took a lot of typing. That is the surface of my story. There is a HUMONGOUS BACKSTORY. If you want me to post that I might post part of it. Now let me introduce you to the characters.

She secretly had a boyfriend though. A garif named Amaru. One night when she was thirteen her husband tried to rape her. Amaru walked in, stopped the rape, and beat up on the husband. Annelist radicals already showed racism to non-hume races that can breed with humes. Viera and garif were no exception. Amaru was exiled. Seda ran away years later trying to find him. She couldn’t. Out of money and out of luck she now works as a stripper. She is very headstrong and isn’t afraid to bend the rules. However, she doesn’t like any form of sexism against girls. She is studying to go to law school to become a Gaston Judge. This is one of the only ways to get out of her marriage.

Already an S-Rank Judge and one of the most respected members in the military, he is next in line to be the newly elected Supreme Court Judge. He wants his little brother to join but he’s having trouble convincing him. Colt, one way or another, is constantly fixing Gale’s mistakes. Colt likes to know all sides of a situation before he does anything and gets frustrated if he doesn’t. Despite being one really rich and eligible, he is EXTREMELY SHY AROUND GIRLS. I guess that’s his weakness.
Job: Judge Knight
Weapon: Both a mandatory judge sword called Testament and a deck of Judge Cards.
Technique: Forbid-based on the current laws in Gaston, he can arrest people. Arrest is a condition that halves all stats. If you are in Gaston, the law will automatically be told to you. If you’re not in Gaston, then you won’t. Be careful. Even you own party members can get arrested.

He met up with “Scorpion.” Because of his military training, he became a recruiter to “Scorpion,” teaching new kids how to spy, shoot, and kill. He mastered the gun very quickly. Now he is training the “Black Mages,” a street gang from Gaston.
Job: Gunner
Weapon: Guns
Technique: Trigger-Similar to Trigger Happy from X-2. When selected, you have five seconds to press the enter key as many times as possible. Each time you press it, you’ll damage the enemy. Damage is 1/10 the normal though so press it a lot!
Skills:
1.) Breaks: Instead of a knight getting them, Faust gets Power Break and the rest. He can also break weapons if you are fighting an enemy with a charaset though.

Now that that’s over with I can tell you the features. Ivalice would be centered around the industrial revolution and the following events of the 1800’s. There are subways, trains, electric lights, and steam based engines. Slavery and Servitude rates were rapidly dropping. Also, like Africa, everyone is scrambling to the Magicite Islands. Magic is still used more than electricity even though it is more expensive. Espers used to be considered as slaves Humes.
There are eight races in Ivalice: Hume, Bangaa, Viera, Nu Mou, Moogle, Garif, Seeq, and Esper.

Hume: The dominant race representing 40% of the population. They have several religions, cultures, and beliefs. Other races kind of see them as stupid because  they show prejudice in skin color and religion.

Bangaa: The lizard people, although you had better not call them lizards. A certain race of Bangaa is man eating monsters. Intelligent Bangaa don’t want to associate themselves with the term “lizard.”

Viera: The quintessential bunny girls. They are covered in fur, have long hair, and have two pointed ears. They are amazingly strong for their small bunny sizes. Like the Garif, they are capable of breading with Humes.

Nu Mou: The dog/elephant race. They are amazingly intelligent and have strong speaking voices. Most Nu Mou master magic very easily. They are very small in size though. Even though there are a few, you won’t find many who take physical based jobs.

Moogle: A small race that looks like a mole/cat. They have batwing and antennae. Even though they have eyes, most moogles use their antennae to interact with their environment. Most moogles remain unseen but they are the second biggest population next to the Humes. They are excellent engineers and architects. They not only own the biggest mail service on the planet, but they created the Travelers Company. They created points all around the world where travelers can rest. They also created the MOG HOUSE SERVICE. This Service makes portable houses that travelers can use. Most moogles are very resourceful. Despite their small size, they are very strong. It is not uncommon to see a moogle knight.

Garif: The male Viera. Unlike their females, they look like lions. Like Viera they can breed with Humes. Despited their physical strength, they are extremely shy. That is why they all wear masks. The Viera are more dominant to the Garif. Viera ask for marriage and they control most of the money.

Seeq: The pig people. They can’t speak Hume language but they can clearly understand it. Most seeq are not very smart and get taken advantage of. You will most likely find them doing physical jobs.

Espers: Despite their awesome powers, they are the lowest race on the social ladder. Espers are related to a strange phenomenon called “Mist.” The stuff produces monsters and can drive most everyone crazy. According to Annelist religion, they are meant to be slaves to the Humes. In a lot of ways this is true. For some reason, when an esper is told to do something by a hume, they do it. They have the hardest time making a living and need many laws to protect their rights.

Now that you have an idea of my world, I can tell you about the battle system. I’m using a heavily edited DBS.  I use seven different main systems: Link Attack/Addition, Avatar, Limit Combo, Monster Level, Ability Point, Magic Transfer, and Standby.

Link Attack/Addition: Tired of the same old boring A. Select Attack Command, B. Select Monster, C. Execute Attack? My attacking Is a little different. Attached to your weapon are weapon skills. After you select a monster to attack, you will have 1 second to press one of the number keys. YES YOU ONLY HAVE 1 SECOND. If you press a number key 1-4 or 6-8 you will execute a weapon skill instead of a normal attack. If you want to use your normal attack instead, press 5 or don’t press anything. Weapon skills have one slight advantage over normal attacks. Each enemy in the game has 2 weak points and 1 super weak point. Link attacks, unlike normal attacks, can hit weak points. If you hit a normal weak point, you get to use more link attacks depending on you Link Attack Level. There are seven levels. If you are at one, you get to use one link attack. If you are at level seven, you get eight. If you hit a super weak point, you go into blitz mode. You will have five seconds to hit in a secret combination to use a super strong attack. Each character has 24 blitzes. All of them are immediately unlocked as long as you know the code. Also, you can equip additions to your link attacks. Here is an example. Gale has the Link Attack: Rising Spin Cut. He has to put it in the 3 Slot. In the Addition Slot No. 3 he puts Firestrike. Now whenever he uses Rising Spin Cut, it will do fire damage. To

Avatar: This is my summon system. Each character has an alter ego that can be called to battle. When Avatar is selected that character is out of commission for one turn. After the turn is up, all of that person’s MP disappears. The Avatar replaces the entire party. But just so they don’t get lonely, Avatars can equip espers. Espers are like equipment to you Avatars. Each Avatar has an Attack Slot and a Defense Slot. If you put an esper in the attack slot the esper will become a weapon and change the espers elemental properties. If you put an esper in the Defense Slot, it will act like a shield that boots stats. Also when an esper is in the defense slot, the esper fights alongside you. For example, when Alexis selects Avatar she’ll be out of commission for one turn. After the turn is up all of her MP disappears and Mateus replaces her and her party. Then Shiva, the defense slot appears beside her. When Mateus selects attack Ilfrit, her Attack slot, appears and attacks. Avatars don’t last forever though. When Avatars are summoned a timer starts. If you look at the faceset you can see the bar. When the bar runs out, the Avatar automatically uses her special attack “Diamond Dust” and disappears. Depending on how much MP was given, that is how long she stays. If you don’t like the Avatars, the espers give their host their special attacks automatically. That means Alexis gets the skills “Meteor Fist” and “Heavenly Strike.”
Note: Your espers can get stronger in two different ways: Item sacrifices, and crystals.
1.) Item Sacrifice: You can give up items to learn new skills. Mateus can learn the skill Celestial Bell by you giving up 12 Potions. Once a skill is learned, it doesn’t go away.
2.) Crystals: There are twelve crystals in the game. Crystals permanently increase the stats of your espers. Also, your Avatars final attacks get stronger for the number of their corresponding crystal. Think about the game Final Fantasy 9.

Limit Combo: Remember when I said the symbols were important? This is my limit break system. Thanks to AzureFenrirs’s Faceset Gauge Tutorial at gamingw.net, I can put in gauges. Now whenever a character is hit, the bar rises. When a character loses 100% of their Max HP the bar will be full. (The bar will NOT move if your HP goes up.) If a character gets their bar hit first their faceset will say LEADER in place of the limit bar. When as second character’s bar becomes full, something special will happen. The two will make a combo attack. What attack the two use depends on their compatibility. The compatibility levels are worst, bad, neutral, good, and best. Depending on how compatible the leader is to the second, the leader will execute a special attack. The better the compatibility, the stronger the attack. The custom menu has a limit menu that lets you look at your limit breaks and set your Extremities. Extremities affect your worst and your best compatibility. If you select DIFFERENCE, your best attack will come from someone of the opposite sex. If you select INDIFFERENCE, Your best attack comes from someone of the same sex.

PLEASE LOOK HERE================================

Monster Level: Monsters will have their own levels in this game. Like in Final Fantasy 8, they will change depending on your level. [Yes I know this makes the game harder but that is where the difficulty option comes in. There are three levels: easy, medium, and hard. On easy mode, only HP will change along with levels. On normal mode, stats get stronger too. On hard mode HP, enemies will also learn new skills at new levels. You can change the difficulty at any save point in the game.]

EDIT: As it turns out I can't Change ATK, DEF, Magic, and SPD of Monsters without using Skills. If anyone Knows a way around this please tell me. Monsters will still have their own levels, change their HP and get skills as they get stronger though.

LOOK UP========================================

Ability Points: This is how you learn magic (see below), weapon skills, and additions. At the end of battle, you gain AP. When you earn enough AP you get stuff. There are multipliers for the magic but not for the weapon skills or the addition. Additions and link attacks cost a set number of AP. You can check it in the custom menu.

Magic Transfer: This is the exact same system as in Final Fantasy 6. When an Avatar equips an esper, the esper can transfer magic to the host. This uses AP. All spells cost 100 AP but there are multipliers.
Magic has two advantages over normal skills.
1.) They are 100% accurate.
2.) AVATARS LEARN EVERY PIECE OF MAGIC THEY ARE ATTATCHED TO.

Magic costs a lot of MP to use.

Standby: This isn’t really a system. When your character runs out of MP they are given the status condition Standby. This Replenishes 25% of you MP for the next 4 turns. The bad news is that you can’t use any skills at all until the turn is up. Also if you have 1 MP left and you can’t use it, tough luck. Enemies get Standby also so be careful.

Now that the battle system is out of the way, I can tell you my features. There will be a CMS. I haven’t decided whether to use the beautiful full blown one, or a split one. The full blown one will have all special features like battle order and graphically enhanced item/equip menus. If I use the split one I already have a working menu and I can make separate, not as cool looking but still functional menu. There are advantages to both and I know how to do both. There will be puzzles, and minigames. The minigames I am planning are
1.) Tetra Master
2.) Airship Battles
3.) Chocobo Racing
4.) Motorcycle Levels

All will be playable in the demo.

Let me say now that what you read up there at the top was not my introduction. It was just to give you a taste of the huge backstory. Now I want you to do something for me. DO NOT OVERHYPE THIS GAME! THIS IS MY FIRST GAME!

What I Need: I am proud to say I don’t need much of anything. I already have most of the graphics I need. I have the music. If I need anything it would be CMS Picture placement tips and charsets of the races. I already drew charaset templates. I just need to clothe them. If you want to take the time out to draw some clothes on a template I’ll be sure to credit you.

What I can do for you: I am very good at making charasets. My spriting sucks but my charasets look really great. Just don’t expect me to help you after you ask me to make hundreds. A couple is good enough. Also I have some sprite rips of the Four Fiends of Final Fantasy IV from Final Fantasy: Dawn of Souls. I also managed to rip the Totemas from Final Fantasy Tactics Advance. I didn’t rip the animation though, just the sprite. You can use them for monster sprites.

This is my first post. Again can someone help me access the main page. Please post suggestions and common criticism. If you come to say change the name, go away. I’ve already given you my reasons. Let this be my first impression. I hope you’ll accept me.

If you're using Internet Explorer (like me), then you can't access the main page. Instead, go to the closest root area to the main page (eg, Off Topic), and look at your address bar.

At the end it will say "&catid=n", where n is a number. Play around with it and it will take you places...

You appear to have spent a lot of time developing the characters and since it's late at night for me I haven't read it all yet, but it seems deep. Plus, you've included Viera. Two good points in my book :D

If you're using the FF8 Monster system (as in levelling up in accordance with your party), with the DBS that'll mean A LOT of monsters, especially considering your three difficulty modes. I'm very suicidal when it comes to a lot of work too (meaning I do a lot of it), but make sure you know what you're getting yourself into... (Each monster will need about 296 other copies of itself...)

Post some screenies, and I'm fairly sure yours will be a good fangame :)

Wow, this game looks excellent.
I'll be watching this, and it's good to see a new member with a game as great looking as this. Good luck.

You have a bigger future than I will ever have, I know it. Maybe you should call it FF Tactics Reminiscence due to the similarities to a FF Tactics game though. (Just in my opinion, that is.)

The name is too good to waste.

...Endless Nova you must mean! I also remember someone who worked on Final Fantasy Conquest.

For My First Post

Thanks everyone for the compliments. I do have a few things to say though.

Raen Ryong: Actually there is an easier way than your way. I only need one set monster instead of your 256. Problem is that you can see how many hit points the monster has before battle. Also It takes more pen and paper than programming.

RPG LORD: I said FF Endless Nova was the best. The one I couldn't remember was Empires. And about the series of unfortunate events, that is a story in itself.

To everyone, believe it or not, that's what was left after I cut it for length. That took a LONG TIME TO TYPE. You'll see the rest of the story after the first demo.

Soon I'm gonna put up the facesets and charsets next to the names. The reason it's taking so long is because the faces are actually Amano's artwork or something similar. I need to find a dog and a ninja girl if he made one.

If you look up the FF7 artwork you might find Red. Idunno what Red 13's to resemble, but I guess it could help.
