Guitar Stuff?

I'm thinking of buying an electric guitar for my gf for chirstams cuz shes been saying how shes always wanted one. Anyway, I have NO idea on what to get or what to even look for.

Anyone have any ideas? I'm guessing I need a guitar of some kind, and amp, probably speekers, but i don't really have a clue

I suggest not spending all too much money on them, cause if she doesn't like playing the guitar you don't feel all that dissapointed with a beautifull awesome guitar standing in the corner of the darkest room collecting dust.

You can usually get a fender squire with amp in a package at most guitar stores where I live. I imagine its the same.

Youll get a little amp, with like, your cords, and maybe a pedal, and bag for your crap, and a little starter fender squire.

Its good to learn on.
Its shiny and looks nice (if you dont know better) and sounds like its supposed to. Great to learn on. But if she gets very good, Shell want to upgrade in the future.

Dude, Squires suck.  My dad was going to get me one, but decided not to because the guy at the store (who knew a lot about guitars) told him they're total crap.

I suggest something slightly better, like an Ibanez, a Dean, an Epiphone, a real Fender, or a Gibson.

Dude. theyre starter guitars. She dosent know how to play. I know they suck, if you already have discerning tastes, but why the hell sugest a Gibson as a gift to a less than newbie guitar hopefull?

The Squier (Yes, it's Squier, not Squire) Showmaster is a guitar that comes in a starter pack with an amp and some stuff. It's actually a very good guitar, excellent for playing a wide range of stuff. If you can find that package, it's well worth going for it.

I got mine for £100, I dunno how much that is in dollars.

Just a word of warning though, they mostly contain the standard Squier 10 Watt amp. It is utter crap. Pay some extra and get a better amp. It'll be helpful in the long run.

If someone tries to play guitar and gives up, they should have to eat a jar of raw coffee. Giving up before you're any good is a crime, and should be illegal.

As to guitar brands, every brand and individual guitar has its own pros and cons. Take Ibanez. Yeah, they're good, but they're expensive, and their range of guitars is severely limited. Fender are very middle-of-the-road. Epiphone are good, if you can afford. Gibson are better than everything, and likewise more expensive. Dean... Meh, Trivium use them. That's a brilliant reason why you shouldn't.

Besides, any guitar can be modified by a decent guitar tech to play better. I'm thinking of getting some parts of mah Squier replaced for a bit more oomph.

There is a guitar called Godin, they have a natural acoustic tone, and they go for about 300 bucks Canadian. They sound awesome amped up, and for Christmas most music stores will put them up for sale. As for an amp, you can get a decent Marshall (actually more than decent) for about 100 bucks Canadian. A bit much, but otherwise I would ask a music store specialist for a good starter pack.

The best starter guitar I know of is the Ibanez GRX20.
Dragonium is completely wrong too, it's about $170 USD.
Squiers really do suck.
I wouldn't touch them with a 9 inch pole.

I bought a Behringer starter pack. The amp isn't bad at all, I like it actually. The guitar... could've been a lot worse but isn't a piece of heaven. I'll use it if I have to, but if I can use my precious Maximús, I'll do it.

Fender all the way.. Well i dont have one but my father owns like 3 of them.. SG is also an option like "Angus" From AC/DC. Fender also have this niice feeling when you tap.

I disagree with Linkizcool, Marshall isn't a starter amp at all. They're expensive and you have to treat them right. Gemini has the right idea, you want a package. Those things are almost like full size toy guitars, they provide instant fun and she'll be able to start playing right away without any hassle. If you can get an amp with in built effects It'd be even better.

My first guitar was a second hand Wilson, I have no idea where it came from originally. It sounded crappy at first but has got better over the years (It's like the sound's got better as my skill improved :p) and even now It's the guitar I use most. So I never really had a starter guitar.

Schecter makes some damn good guitars. But they're not really for beginners. I'd go with Ibanez, they're pretty well-rounded, especially good for rock.

For an amp, I suggest a Marshall. They have really good sound. Even a 10W model sounds great. (Well, my MG does anyways..)

Actually, just get her a lame starter pack. Chances are she's a vapid retard who will give it up after a month anyways. And I think $150 is enough for a gift for just a girlfriend.

meh, when i go to guitar center I can usually find this epiphone les paul for about $99. buy that that with a 5-10 watt amp and  a cheap cable and its acually better than a little squier package.

An Epiphone Les Paul for $99? That's pretty damn good considering the cheapest they sell for over here is £130 (I think that's about $250 with the new exchange rate, according to xe.com anyway).

Most 10 Watt amps suck. I say most, because like the MG that Desimo mentioned there are a few. But it's usually more economical to get a 15 Watt anyway. I have a Line 6 Spider II 15 for practice. Got it today in fact. It owns. Oh yes.

And it cost £79. If that's not awesome I don't know what is. xD
