TMNT review.. of my life(minor spoilers)
« on: March 27, 2007, 10:35:29 PM »
TMNT. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. 90% of the adult male population was raised on it.
It's so great.
Now, when I was a kid, I loved the first movie and the cartoon.
When I turned 15 I got a bunch of the original comics, and one of the pen and paper RPG rulebooks. o_o
I started disliking the cartoon after that.
When I heard they were making a new cartoon in 2003, I was stoked, but I didn't expect much. Seeing as how the second and third movies were.. well, terrible is a powerful word, but.. just bad.

Yeah, it sucked, as I expected.
I went to the internet to find some opinions on it.
Apparently a lot of fans of the comics liked the new show..
I was astounded!
They were nothing alike. Also, Donatello, my favorite turtle, was turned into a huge nerdy faggot.
Sure he made machines in the first cartoon, but no jetpack motorcycles and turtle tanks.. o_O!

After seeing the trailers for the new movie.. I thought the turtles looked... 'gimpy'. And the voices pissed me off. And Raphael didn't even say 'damn'. I mean.. nothing like the movie I loved..
After hearing nothing but raving reviews from fans of the original comics, I knew I had to see it anyways.

I was pleasantly surprised with the first scene.. the turtles didn't look gimpy, and their voices(while not as awesome as the first movie) were actually okay.
It was a summary of the story so-far.
As far as I can tell it takes place some time after the first comic/first movie.
So.. I get into it.. the jokes are actually kind of funny.
The turtles have split apart, sorta. One of them has left to some far off land, and the remaining three are in disarray.

The story is really about the brotheryness of the turtles, and the relationship between them all. I was happy that they at least tried to model the voices after the original movie, but they kept bugging me. Especially Splinter. That Mako guy, who did most of his lines, died 2 days after he was announced as the voice of Splinter.
Regardless, he had like 90% of his lines recorded, so I assume they kept them. The rest of the lines... some weird dude imitating Mako.

Something about the animation was odd, I guess it was too cartoony for my tastes. The 30 pound robotic mouths barely moving or changing shape.. just seemed natural. These mouths.. they were too.. 'anime'.
Not a big deal.

The soundtrack... Jesus Christ, NO!!!!
The old movies had INSTANT CLASSICS by MC HAMMER and VANILLA ICE, like Ninja Rap and T.U.R.T.L.E. Power! Not terrible fucking Billy Talent songs that were not written for the movie at all!

Anyways.. the cast was at least impressive.
The turtles were done by non-stars(I can see why they aren't famous..)
A handful of stars made appearances though.
Sarah Michelle Gellar(April)
Kevin Smith
Patrick Stewart(Winters)
Zhang Ziyi
Lawrence Fishburne(Morpheus/Narrator)

Yeah, there was one thing that pissed me off more than anything in the world, though. I can't even SAY it, because we don't have spoiler tags... but.. DAMN. It SUCKED. AND IT INVOLVED APRIL.
AND IT SUCKED.
SUCKED FUCKS.

The story was awesome, though. It was written well, and it stayed pretty true to the comics.
It reminded me more of the first movie than anything I've seen in the last 16 years, so.. TMNT. Awesome film.
Because of it being animated, the combat had a lot more room for awesomeness. Finally, Donatello shines in battle. He hasn't done that since the comic.

15/10!!!
All time fav movie of 2007!!!
sorry 300, you got knocked down a peg

I can honestly say that this is the first review I have heard.

I was going to stay away from it until DVD release, on account of everthing after the first movie shitting the bed  in terms of coolness.

I was a huge fan of the comics....And I can honestly say I had NO IDEA there was a paper RPG. I would like to know more about that.

Because of your review, I have decided to go see this on the weekend, with a buddy who was also raised on the TMNT power.

I enjoyed the origonal cartoon voices. Leonardos especially. Mostly because he did the voice of Kaneda on the origonal Akira dub.

I was pretty much just waiting to hear a half decent review from a peer to go see it though. Tutrtles pretty much taught me everything I know about drawing comics. I have a raphael tattoo.

If it knock 300 down, its gotta be good

*wipes away beads of sweat* Whew! If MM says it isn't the worst thing the world's seen, then it's greatly surpassed my expectations! That's going up on my movie list.

Or, go take a bus / go walking / go cycling. I prefer the latter, even if it's over ten kilometres.

I saw this movie as well. I can't say I enjoyed it as much as MM (WHY would Donatello become a tech support guy? I can see Raph being a Batman-style vigilante and Mike as an entertainer, but... TECH SUPPORT!?) I didn't like the villains either; it's cool that they managed to fit the Foot in there, but Winters was pretty one-dimensional. I did enjoy the battle sequences (Raph vs Leo was definitely the highlight of the movie for me), and the CG style was a natural fit for the franchise. All in all, not my favorite movie, but definitely a great starting point for (hopefully better) sequels.

And for the record, 300 was better.
