The Undercover Hamill
« on: September 09, 2007, 08:54:04 AM »
You know how RPGMaker was made for making RPG-games? Well, here's yet another title attempting to break that barrier, The Undercover Hamill!

Before I start babbling on about the storyline, I'd like you to forgive me for not putting any effort to it. Thank you.

 Storyline

In short you are a secret agent, on a secret mission, having just infiltrated a secret subwaytrain that's transporting secret stuff to the secret base of their secret terrorist organisation.

You play as Agent Mark Hamill AKA Luke Skywalker, who has just infiltrated a transport-subwaytrain which is being suspected for transporting bombs to a terrorist organisation. Being disguised as their engineer you are to complete multiple missions, such as comfirming whatever it is they're transporting, before the timer of 20 minutes ends.

 Features

Having said this I believe your expecting a lot of cool features you may not have seen much of before in a RPGMaker game, and you should too.

Custom Message Boxes

Let's begin with something small, like our Custom Message Boxes, which you may have already noticed on the screenshots below. Instead of having a huge box, underneath or above the speaking characters I will make use of much smaller boxes appearing over the speaking character, giving the game a sort of comic athmosphere. Obviously the screenshot below shows only a preview of what it might look like, and the extremely ugly boxes I used there will be replaced with better ones eventually. But before replacing the ugly message boxes with better ones, I will use most of my time to create The Trust System.

The Trust System

If you've played any of the Hitman game's you should what I'm talking about. In the upper-left-corner I will place a meter showing how much the thugs trusts you, and basically everything you do affects the trust meter. Which is exactly why you, for an example, can't use any of your secret agent gears infront of a thug, if you do so... Game Over.

The Reply System

The Reply System also affects the trust meter greatly. From time to time, these thug-like guys will approach you an ask you questions and it's responsibilty to answer them right. By pressing 1 you will give them a postive answer, and obviosly by pressing 2 you give them a negative reply. Now you're probably thinking; "Why would you ever give the thugs a negative reply? They'll kill you!"
And that's true, but at the same time by doing favors for them, it might expose that you're actually not a real engineer, so you have to pay attention to what they ask and answer what you think is an appropriate answer.

Sneaking and Distraction System

Sneaking past and discrating these thugs are also a great part of this game. Because like you might already know a subwaytrain is basically a couple of cabins stuck together, and obviously a smalltime engineer doesn't have access to all of them. Therefore there will be alot of disracting the thugs and sneaking past them to reach a certain cabin and complete a certain mission. Lets say you want to get past the third cabin, but there are two thugs guarding the entrance, what do you do to get past them? You use a discration, of course! Like for an example, starting a fire in the rest room, will cause most of the thugs to panic and start trying to put out the fire instead of guarding the cabin you wish to enter. And when you're finally in their you might have to hide behind boxes and sneak past the guards using whatever objects there are around you.

The Timer

Finally we have The Timer. You will have at least 15-20 minutes to complete your goals before the subwaytrain reaches it's base. And certain events on the train will only happen at cetain times, therefore you will not be able to complete all of your missions in just 5 minutes, and then have to wait the rest 15 minutes for the train to reach it's base. No, you will have plenty of things to do at all times, so you're not going to have to spend too much time waiting for certain things to happen.

 Helping

I'm useless at making charsets or any kind of sprite at all, therefore if somebody feels like helping a poor man out, go ahead, send me a PM or tell me about in in this thread. And also, I remember Tomi made the Mark Hamill sprite, so if you're still interested in giving me a hand, Tomi, please let me know.

 Conclusion

The full game will be 15-20 minutes just like the timer, and if it's a success I just might make sequel in a different environment. I have also not put up any deadline at all yet, but I wouldn't expect it to be released until the beginning of next year.

I hope it wasn't too much info filled with too much grammar, anway, that's all I have to say.

The systems sound awesome... And making a short game is such a fantastic idea. Well done for coming up with that solution XD

I'm a little confused as to why you put Mark in, but if you make the theme for the ending credits the "Luke be a jedi toniiiight" song I'll forgive you.

Hell Yeah! Just recovered all my old rm2k/3 games from my 10 year old, broken laptop hard drive that had been formatted and had a new OS installed on it. Oh, and I did all of this from my phone. WIN

Mmyeah. My still game still exists though, well kinda. It's just a buried project I'll dig up after I've finished this one.

The reason Mark's in it is thanks to nothing other than a bad inside joke gone too far, but heck ...he looks a bit like him doesn't he?

I'll make sure I add that song too. Anything to make a project more awesome! :)

Sulking in other people's topics isn't nice.

For what seems to be an in-joke riddled game, this seems sufficiently awesome. The whole reply system sounds really cool, especially, rather than just making everything a fetch quest and all. Good luck finishing the demo.
