Charas Magazine - This Time, it's for Real
« on: October 08, 2007, 08:24:32 PM »
I tried doing it in secret again but failed. Last time it was much easier as I wrote everything, but this effort is a little bigger...

Anywho, you all know what time it is: Time to do another Charas magazine. But I am not going to just sit back and make a few little images for the web or an email to circle around. No. This time, we must aim higher! We must go farther than others have gone before. We must make a real, PRINTED magazine.

Yes. Printed. On paper. You can touch it.

And no, not printed on my home printer and mailed out. No. You see, I've helped publish books before (Ignore the bit about Sealed Gate, it's bullshit). And it is sitting in my drawer as I type this. This will be professionally printed and made available worldwide. For a low price, at that! (I believe the quote was around $6.30 per issue printing costs, and we aren't going to charge royalty, meaning that will be the price).

How do we do this? Well, for starters, the first step is to plan things out. I kinda started on that. You see, this isn't just a spur of the moment plan. This started about two months ago while I was in the middle of working on 3.0. I had the idea, let it sit for awhile, and, satisfied that it wasn't a shitty idea, started to gather the best talent Charas had to offer and putting forth article ideas.

Needless to say, it bombed. My preoccupation with 3.0 and college let the project fall into deadness, until good ole Moosetroop reminded me of it. Now I have enough time to at least lightly manage development if not whip people into doing my bidding.

What I need now is people to do stuff. There's a lot of tasks that need to be done:

-IDEAS: I have a list made, but the list sucks and is incomplete. This is something anyone can do - it requires very little effort and helps us a whole lot. Pages need to be filled - HELP US FILL THEM.

-WRITERS: The bulk of a magazine is usually text, yes? And someone has to write all that text. This is your time to shine! Think of it - after publication, you can order a copy and show it to all your friends: "Hey, look at this. It's a cool article. Look at who it was written by... Damn right. Oh? You want to have sex with me? Why, sure, I can fit you in between all that article writing I'm doing."

Writers can come with or without ideas - consider real world article writers, who are given topics and have to do research. You might have to do this too if you sign up, but it will certainly be an interesting experience. And not to mention, if you ever apply for a writing job, this is perfectly valid as past experience - despite what you may think, little projects like this show a passion for the job and employers love that kind of stuff.

-GRAPHICS PEOPLE: Black text on a white background is okay, but this is the Charas magazine - this isn't going to be a recurring thing, so we want it to look as sexy as possible. Do you have skill in photoshop? Are you a gifted artist? Or perhaps your skill is with pixels? We need all sorts of people to make our magazine pop with exciting visuals.

If you think you have anything to contribute to the project, say so! We're looking for people who are willing to help out in every area. Even if it's a simple idea or small tidbit of info that you think my be useful, don't hesitate to show us!

Use this thread to rant and rave about how awesome you think the idea is. I'll be keeping track so you can also offer your help here, although contacting me via email (mkelly01 AT fit DOT edu is my most-checked one nowadays although zmen8 AT msn DOT com I also keep track of) or AIM/MSN (osmose1000 and zmen8 AT msn DOT com respectively) is another way. I'll be making other threads in the Magazine forum to work on the actual projects. If you don't wish to know what will be in the magazine then don't look at them. If you want to submit ideas than post in those threads.

This is still a very in-development idea. No promises, besides that I will try my best to bring this to completion. But I CAN'T DO IT ALONE!!!

Sorry about that, my internet completely died. I'm writing this on another computer.

Anyway, yes, this is an awesome idea. I honestly don't think contributing to the magazine will be difficult either, people. We need all sorts of people with knowledge on different things. Each person wouldn't have to write a huge amount.

Osmose has to work single handedly on 3.0 minus beta testing and ideas so I think it's only fair we help him out on this one :p

From the other thread. Don't think that you're signing yourself up for a recurring job. Right now this is just a one time thing - write an article, BAM, you're done.

Excellent. I'm game to help as I was on the others if I can be told that it will serve a purpose.

I pledge myself to you, Moose. :)

I suggested a layout in the Ideas thread, and would be willing to write some of the articles. I need something to take away what little free time I have left. ;)

ZeroKirby: Don't you have some experience with Photoshop? Would you be willing to work on layout/background/art/general stuff that would be done in an image editing program?

Dragoon: Sure. Head on over to the ideas thread to propose ideas or look for ideas you like.

Sounds neat.  That'd be different, a magazine that's Charas?  Thats got to be the awesome thing I've ever heard.

Hell Yeah! Just recovered all my old rm2k/3 games from my 10 year old, broken laptop hard drive that had been formatted and had a new OS installed on it. Oh, and I did all of this from my phone. WIN
