So I'm doing an essay in call about how the n and b word in hip hop can affect the community. Now, my question is do you think music can have a massive affect like that on us ppl?

And no this ain't a bash hip hop topic. You can even pick rock or pop or whatever to talk about so please leave the "HIP HOP AIN'T MUSIC IT'S NOISE!!" signs at home. Thank you.

To be honest, the N word isn't really big around here, but 'B' is for sure.

Not sure how It would relate to hip-hop, but at least it's confirmed it is around.

Popular music will always have an effect on the masses. Some people will always take it further than others.

For example, I listen to a LOT of punk music, the sex pistols, the clash, the ramones, etc, but I do not dress punk (as in the chains, the spikes, etc) but I know people who listen to good charlotte and do dress that way.

The same occurs for rap. When you see people dressed 'gangsta' it's an effect of the music. Those people will often use the n and b words to show how 'gangsta' they are, even though they are degrading words.

I think that rap is a great form of music, but like any form of popular music, once the music industry gets ahold of it, they ruin it. That's why we have rappers that sing about money, drugs and sex, when rap used to carry a lot of weight, especially pointing out the problems black people face.

A lot of people try to imitate people/things they think is cool, so naturally 'some' people will imitate the stereotypes from their favorite music type. Music however is only one small part of the issue.

Sex Pistols were a bunch of whiny snots. Aside from Anarchy in the UK, there's what, 1 other song I actually care to listen to? Just listen to the Dead Kennedys. They're Sex Pistols but they don't suck and have a purpose.

No music doesnt affect me directly unless I let it.  People are stupid enough to a) follow w/e the crowd likes and b) take the music as a philosophy on life.

These kids are stupid.  All of them.  They're not some chosen few.  These kids are ****ing morons.  From 1st grade to college.  And as ****ing morons, they cant think for themselves and be creative.  Little shits in 5th grade act like they're grown BECAUSE of music.  10th graders spend thousands of dollars on sneakers and cars BECAUSE of music.  They took they're first drug because of music.  They drank because of music.  They probably had sex because of music, seeing as losing your virginity is some right to passage these days.  And then the other kid did it because his best buddy was doing it.

We're all morons.  We let ourselves become attached to these ideas portrayed in videos.  We become emos because green day and simple plan showed us this new gospel of how horrible our parents were.  We became metalheads because Killswitch Engage made it cool to be angry.  We became hip-hop because ****ing bitches and sippin on bub is what all the rappers were doing.  We're stupid kids.

Its not hard to stay true to yourself and not follow a crowd, but alot of people dont.  Why?  Because too many people havent, and they dont want to be left out.  If you're smart enough to be yourself, cool.  You can come to my chirstmas party.

As for hip-hop, **** what its become.  There are very few mainstream rappers that express the genres true nature.  Hip hop is supposed to be a kid in the street with a can of spraypaint next to his cardboard box that he's breakin' on.  Its become a gun packing black dude who fucks whatever moves, drives a big car with a loud bass DESPITE THE FACT IT SOUNDS LIKE ****, and drinks whatever Biggie said was cool.





tl;dr.  Yes it affects us because we're all stupid and crave to be a part of something.  Hip-hop isnt the same and probably never will be .

These guys are a penny a dozen here in Puerto Rico, no thanks to 'idols' like Daddy 'Dumbass' Yankee and Don 'Doodoo' Omar.

Even kids go around in cornrows, do-rags, and baggy pants, with 'Scarface' shirts.

The problem is, that what hip-hop once was, and the way the N word was used in that context has been hijacked and raped and gave birth to what exists today. "Nigga" used to be a declaration of identity and rebellion against racist system by warping the meaning and intention of the word it spawned. It is now a meaningless epithet added to every other sentence used in order to try to bring relevance to meaningless, bland music that is nothing more than narcissistic braggadocio aimed to make money which the rapper/"artist" can  write trite rhymes about in the future.

That is not to say that hip-hop is dead. Saul Williams, a spoken word artist, writer, actor, and rapper just released an album which deals with this very issue entitled, "The Enevitable Rise and Liberation of Niggy Tardust." It is an album about a black artist's struggle to abandon the stereotypes which he simultaneously embraces in his life. THis album uses the N word profusely, and is a commentary on its multiple meanings and uses in our society.
