This is my first attempt at an RPG. I already have a bunch of characters and a possible storyline. I dont think the name will stay.

I have the main characters already:

Fenik---AGE 19
Race: Human
Skilled Weapons: Blades

Naomi---AGE 18
Race: Sukionna
Skilled Weapons: Spears

Fang---AGE 27
Race: Ana, animal humanoid.
Skilled Weapons: Axe

Stephen---AGE 30
Race: Human
Skilled Weapons: Firearms

You've told us relatively nothing about the game. I hope you don't expect us to judge fairly what you have. All you have is four charcaters with ages and weapons, and even a title that's not  even permanent.

I made a similar list of characters like that in 5 minutes on ms word.

You really need to get a story concept and some screens together before you make a game thread.

The games about an ancient demonic gemstone locked away in the human world. When a team of areaologists discover it, a rift opens to another world, Ethara, and they're sucked in. At the same time, the gemstone shatters and spreads across Ethara. The gem's essence causes monsters to multiply across the lands.

Thats pretty much all I got at the moment. I dont know how to put screenshots on.

Press the print screen button on your keyboard, and then go into MSpaint and paste the screen in. Then save that and upload it to photobucket. Then copy the IMG tag or whatever that they give you beneath the thumbnail of your image and paste that into your post.

A game featuring more extras and minigames than anything. Endorse in hours of fun without even doing the storyline. A game with so many features it's just not right.

Well as you said. This is your first rpg, take notice to the earlier posts but not to much.

Yes, what you began with isn't that special, well it's pretty much nothing. There are some steps to make a game thread seem more appealing to other members. I'll add a list to follow:

 
  • Tell us some background that will make us rather involved with the story to follow.
  • Let us know what kind of type this game will be, futuristic, medieval ect.
  • Tell us about the intro.
  • Simply write down some hints to what the plot will be, not the big plot that will happen mid-game but the turningpoint that makes your hero leave on his epic quest.
  • Tell us about the starting characters, include: names, gender, age, a quick description, weapon skills, magic arts and a rather short biography.
  • Let us know what kinds of special features you are going to include in the game, might be anything from fishing to custom battle system in KH style.

And the big stuff for those who doesn't like to read:
  • Pictures of your characters. May be, charsets, battle chars, facesets or even scetches.
  • Show us some screenshots from your enviroment, battles or conversation in-game. This will make us see what kind of skills you have and be able to judge from it. Take notice that this will be were the most critism will land, but use it to improve and not to give up.


And of course, things that doesn't involve that.
Try to make something that hasn't been used to many times before.  The "magic crystal making animals into monsters and aggresive" is actually used in perhaps every Final Fantasy game except for FFIX where it was the mist.

So, try to work around the more predictable clichés and you'll do fine. And follow the list above if you can. As long as you try; you will succed. Effort is after all, the only way to succes.

Well... I got a list of things.
1. Still trying to figure out photobucket
2. Bios, story
3. I did not ever notice the crystal thing in the FF games (I only had 7 & 8)
4. Its hard for me to come with ideas like this by myself...
5. Everyone hates my ideas... RPG Toolkit tormented me about my ideas.

This is not a question of love and hate young one.
 
Critism kill and critism makes you prosper. It's just like the fluffy white snow, it has pros and cons, you just have to deal with both.

Stick with your story if you want to but you'll need to make something special so your game is not just "one of the evil crystal games".
Make it special, make it original. Go into wikipedia or something and check the part with crystals in final fantasy and see what you should focus on.

You don't have to use photobucket, you could use something simple like TinyPic or imageshack.

The Bios really are the heart of the characters. One of the main reason why I choose an rpg trather than a first-person-shooter is the character development that occurs along the game. So try to figure it out.
Can't remember who did it but there is a turorial on how to make intresting characters here somewhere... But simple guidelines, give the characters a reason for their actions and make the player know why through conversation and actions. That's the key really. Events or incidents that will strenghten the characters personality and willpower.

But comming up with the story is really the main part of the creator, that or the resources used... Hmm...

Well my point is that you can either gather some friends and make a decent/great story or you could do it yourself by planning events along the way and then the points where the story really shines through.

Well, I've been rambling for some time now... I hope you'll think about it and keep working, you might want to start over. But you could always keep the look of your characters and their names. Just perhaps think of a different, improved story.
