The Ashes of Time (working title)
« on: January 06, 2008, 07:05:29 AM »
Yeah, the minute between posts thing is kinda messing up. It took three minutes of clicking "new topic" to make this.... anyway....

So far, the game's untitled, but I'll be finishing this one, it's based on my book which I am halfway done with and a bit of a gift for someone.

Story: War has descended on the magnificent city of New Babylon. The military, vast and powerful as it was, was taken by surprise byt the hordes of mighty undead, known as Hellriders, commanded by a strange and powerful vampire, a man named Rayn. The New Babylonian army is decimated, leaving only a motley crew of survivors. Among these survivors is Gram Enith, a knight entering his mid-thirties. With the sudden loss of three-fourths of its men, the Babylonian army is left without leaders, and Enith soon finds himself a general in command of most of the remnants.
While Enith fights a battle of sword and spear, the greedy and influential council of Magisters fights a subtle and political one against New Babylon's chief rival and financial backer of the Riders: the kingdom of Grethshold. Employing bribery, spies, and assassins against each other, the two kingdoms struggle to gain the upper hand in this war. One of these assassins is the feared Erik of house Thardrak, a skilled and unseen man with a spotless record.
Soon, things escalate into a full-fledged battle in the open plains just outside New Babylon. A few elven emissaries to New Babylon find themselves caught up in the struggle, including Nysatth, a fairly young elven warlock. Despite their claim of neutrality, the elves are attacked and slaughtered, save for a small number, by Hellriders en route to New Babylon. The survivors enter the conflict with no hope, how can so few hope to win against so many?

Characters: You are given a choice between three main characters: Erik, Enith, or Nysatth. Each has his own style of combat.

Name: Erik of house Thardrak
Race: Human
Age: 20's
Class: Assassin
Weapon: Sword in main hand, concealed dagger sometimes used in off-hand
Special: stealth
Bio: Born the last of a dead family, Erik was raised on the streets. His father figure was his older brother, Dreth, who raised him and taught him until Erik felt he was old enough to strike out on his own. His career as an assassin began when, in a desperate attempt to flee from combat, he killed a guard that was chasing him with his brother's knife. A powerful politician witnessed the killing and employed Erik as his personal killer, teaching him to block out emotions and feelings. Eventually, his own teachings turned against him, as Erik was bought out by a rival and hired to kill the man he had once called "sir." Recently, he is under the employ of the Magister Council. Erik is known for using his dead family's influential name to spread doubt and uncertainty among his foes.

Name: Gram Enith
Race: Human
Age: 35
Class: Knight
Weapon: Greatsword
Special: battle stances, power attacks
Bio: Enith was born to a respectable family, a long line of knights on his father's side, and a long line of lords and ladies on his mother's. It was inevitable that Enith himself become a knight, and so, at the age of ten, Enith became a squire to Sir Martin, arguably the most influential knight of the age. Enith was trained in various forms of weaponry, but always came back to his old standby: the two-handed sword. In battle, he was undefeated among his peers, although Martin and the other knights could easily outmatch him. On the day of his twentieth birthday, he became Martin's partner instead of squire. For fifteen years the two traversed the land, stopping in this village or that to help with whatever tasks needed to be done. They had but a day to rest upon their return to New Babylon, for the Hellriders struck early and hard. Among the slain was Martin, Enith's mentor. After attending the funeral and a brief visit with his family, Enith returned to the army and, thorugh tales of his deeds, became a general in command of what was left of the New Babylonian forces.

Nysatth Grimshadow
Race: Elf
Age: 100
Class: Caster
Weapon: Longsword
Special: spells
Bio: Born to no spectacular parents, Nysatth's place in his race's matriarchal society was determined at birth. However, it soon became apparent that Nysatth was destined to become more than a mere commoner: he was one of the few elves to be blessed with the presence of a demon within him. Those few possessed by demons at birth were among the mightiest spellweavers of the land. Nysatth was taken from his family at age seven and trained until his seventieth birthday to become a spellweaver. It soon became obvious that Nysatth had trouble controlling his demon. Although his endurance and channeling ability were decent, he was unable to keep his demon from overruling his decisions on a whim. For this, he was expelled from the spellweaver academy and sent to join the Emissary Combine, working for no pay as a diplomatic escort, a bodyguard for elven emissaries. It is on one of these escort missions that Nysatth first comes in contact with the Hellriders, powerful undead beings born from a fusion of dark demons and corpses. A patrol of the things kill many of the other bodyguards and diplomats Nysatth was sent with, leaving only himself and two others alive. Those three survivors ar filled with thoughts of vengeance, and join Enith and his band of warriors.

I know it's a bit long, but.... how's it sound so far? I'm still working out the sprites and coding, screens will be up when I get it ll sorted out.

I really like this one Roland. I can see the Assassin's Creed influence a little bit. My only advice would be to not code an ABS. Technically the coding is easy, but in the long run almost everyone on this site who was making one gave up on it. I even tried it three times.

Can't wait for screens!

Sounds awesome.
It took me longer to post a game thing,(almost a hour)
I got it all done and without knowing I pressed restart instead of post
which deleted 800 words...I was ticked off for hours haha.

lol
aboutasoandthis, I've decided against an ABS, it doesn't work with Erik's gameplay.  I may still use a CBS, you never know. Screens will be up once I have sprites besides the hideous RTP placeholders I'm using as of now, and the demo a little after that, since I'm still working on my CBS.

Wow, took a while.

First: The game now has a title.
Second: I haven't put much work in to it... (damn you, Mass Effect!)
Third: I'll officially start production tomorrow.
Fourth: I needs me some sprites still, I'm thinking of FF6 style.

EDIT: I'm needing a spriter. I want to use custom resources but don't have the time to make 'em myself. PM me with a sample if you want to sprite, or just post here. Whichever.
