The Story of Palis
« on: May 22, 2008, 05:15:38 AM »
Trailer:

Plot Overview
Set in the world of Palis, on the Lithian continent, The Story of Palis revolves mostly around the Theiran Prince, Malice Areté. His journey is paralelled by Nichi Abiés-the veteran prince of Gracia.

When Malice was born, prophets predicted that he would be the doom of his homeland, Theira, and grow to bring great evil into the world. They demanded he be killed. But, while his father -Makos- reluctantly agreed, his mother, Penelopea, begged that her son be spared. For love of his wife, Makos did not destroy his child.

In Theiran tradition, being the first born male (of his generation) in the royal house, Malice should have been the next king. But because of the prophecy, he was passed over for his cousin, Vertus, born later in the same year.

Scorned by his father, the priests, and many of the elder generation, Malice grows to be irresponsible, careless, and self-indulgent. In all respects he pales in comparison to Vertus, who is kind, responsible, and a skilled warrior.

After an unexpected turn of events, Malice's other cousin, Una, is murdered by Vertus during a festival. Malice is blamed for her death, as he chose to attend the festivities, rather than stand post with Vertus, as was his duty.

Banished by his own father and told never to come home until he performs the unspeakable task of killing his cousin and best friend, he leaves his isolated island nation for the continent. When he arrives, he finds himself at the end of a 700-year-war.
Inspired by the works of his favourite poet, Xenid, Malice decides he wants to achieve immortality in the same way that the characters of The Epic did.

But, after being told that, his favourite story, The Epic -a romanticized work of fiction- is hiding a true story that -if learned- may change the course of history, Malice must go forward to find out what really happened 700 years ago when the novel is set. Unsure, and inexperienced, but too proud to admit it, Malice finds himself unravelling an ancient conspiracy which is eerily intertwined with the prophecy made at his birth.

Playable Characters-

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v92/greenabsinthe/mfaces.jpg

Malice Areté-
At birth it was predicted that he would bring great evil into the world, and be the fall of his nation. The priests demanded that he be killed, but his father, the king, overruled them and as a result lost his position.
Malice grew up to be an immature, and irresponsible young man, who –after being looked down upon by his elders- took up a laissez-faire attitude.
Used to running from his problems, or else talking his way out of responsibility, he is the very model of what a proper Theiran Prince should NOT be. A constant headache for his parents and his tutors, he skipped most of his lessons, showing up only when he felt like it.
While he is quite popular among others his age –especially among women- he is only truly friends with his cousins, Vertus and Una.
A lover of Xenid’s Epic, he secretly models himself after his hero, Gabriel of Alveus. But history did not go like the poem, and –with no mentor to steer him in the right direction- Malice has taken in not Gabriel’s true spirit, but Xenid’s own ideals and convictions about glory, love, and war.
Though he pretends not to care, he is driven by a need to prove himself to his elders, and especially his father. Like Gabriel in the epic, he claims not to fear the Immortals (or anyone else for that matter), and believes if he fights in the Gracian War he’ll be able to achieve glory and thus prove everyone at home wrong.
Like all Theirans, his native language is Lithian, but he has been educated in Niwan (the continental language). Still, he has a hard time communicating with those from the continent, especially Nichi, and often he cannot make the points he wants to make.
When the stakes get high, and responsibility finally comes to rest on him, he sees it as a chance for glory, and gladly accepts his perceived task. What he doesn’t realize at the time is that sometimes the quest laid out before you, is not the only one that you’re on. The greatest lesson he will have to learn is that –despite what Xenid may say- there are more important things to fight for than glory.

Nichi Abiés-
Nichi is the prince of Gracia City, though –due to his mother’s unnaturally long life (at the start of the game she has reigned for 699 years)- it is never thought that he will be king.
He is a devoted general, and a skilled soldier, with a strategy-first way of thinking. Having traveled on campaigns with his men, handled political councils, and kept his country safe for his seven years as general of the military, he is used to being in control and trusting in himself.
When he finds out that he is not really Ishia’s son, and that his mother and father were Northern peasants killed by Gracian soldiers, his world is turned upside down and he resigns from his position in the army.
However, when the threat of invasion is imminent, he is still trusted to go on an expedition to the countryside. There he is to lead his people into the city for safety.
While he wishes to go alone, Ishia insists that he brings Malice with him on his journey, to try to teach him about being a true warrior.
But Malice’s impulsive and carefree nature conflicts with Nichi’s own rigid way of thinking. And Nichi –not knowing Malice is also a prince- believes his companion to be nothing more than an insolent, foreign messenger. Nichi puts him down while at the same time trying to teach him. His mannerisms remind Malice too much of his own father, and so the two are far from friendly.
The only thing that has remained constant for Nichi (besides war) is his religion, and so he holds to it like a rock. As expected, given his usual attitude, he follows the Missa to the letter, and is a strict enforcer of the laws of The Temple. While it is possible (difficult, but possible) to persuade him in matters of the state, or matters of battle, he will not budge when it comes to his faith.
Devoted to his people, his country, and his mother, he is perceived by others as the archetype of a hero. But there is a darkness inside of him, just as strong –if not stronger- than any other man’s.

Titania Niveus-
A priestess from the temple of Solis, she is found unconscious in a ruined village. She speaks only Lithian and throughout Part I is only able to communicate through Malice. She claims to be from a town called Cormaelon, but Nichi has never heard of it and is convinced she is either a demon in disguise or a spy from the north.
She has been blessed (or cursed) with the unique gift of foresight, but has been treated as a mad woman and ostracized by her village. As a result, she took to staying within the temple and devoting herself entirely to the Immortals.
Titania is good-hearted, and is perceived by Malice to be innocent. Yet, she is more aware of the world than he knows, and while he sometimes changes translations for her, she is often able to deduce what is really going on.
Her flaws lie in her passivity, her secretiveness, her passive-aggressive attitude, and her suppression of her strength. Having been raised in a lowly position, in a patriarchal society, she associates female power and strength with immorality. As such, she often does whatever she’s told, and refrains from stating her opinion. It is only when she realizes that Malice isn’t as wise or strong as he believes, that she makes a vow to protect him and slowly becomes stronger.
Assumedly a war orphan, she was raised by a book (much like Malice was). Though instead of The Epic (which she has never heard of), she grew up reading The Missa (the Holy Scripture). In Malice and Titania, the ideologies expressed in both books begin to challenge each other, so that as they become more familiar with each other, neither is quite sure what they believe anymore.

Belial “Spade” Laertiades-
Belial is a mysterious and cynical demon who has long had a love-hate relationship with Nichi. While in the past they were enemies, Belial has re-emerged as an ally, though at first it is unknown why.
723 years old (give or take a few decades), Belial was cursed a long time ago with both a memory and silencing spell. Until it’s lifted, he will never be able to remember the location or name of his homeland, nor be able to speak his native language. Other things were also erased from his mind, though the job was botched and fragments of memories still remained. A silencing spell had to be used to prevent him from ever mentioning these memories.
His vices are too many to list- from gambling, to promiscuity, to thievery, to greed- he’s done it all and then some. Yet, at the same time, he has his ethics (twisted as they are), and he will not cross them.
As his memory is gone, his history is unknown.
What drives (besides his self-indulgence) is his desire to find his home, despite the hopelessness of it.

Cygnet “Cyne” Roewe-
Said to be the most beautiful woman in Lithia. She is the adopted daughter of Hektor, King of Iuste. She is intelligent, good-hearted and forward with a witty sense of humour, but at the same time, she is also rash, vain and unknowingly demanding. After discovering that Hektor isn’t her biological father, she travels to Gracia City to find her real family. She disguises herself as a provincial peasant, and pretends to be mute so that no one will recognize her accent. She writes to her father’s friend in Belliger, King Der, to tell him that she is safe and to pass word onto her father (who is almost impossible to contact from Gracia). King Der, who has long wanted Hektor to send soldiers to aid in his cause, takes advantage of the situation, saying that Cyne was kidnapped and being held hostage by the Gracians. The result is the amassing of an army large enough to topple the greatest stronghold on the continent.

Glenn Cahan-
Glenn is a knight who is noble by nature, though not as commanding as Nichi. He is level-headed, agreeable, and righteous. His flaw is that he assumes his allies will be just as capable as he is. Without asking about history or experience, he often delves out tasks or insists on measures which others are unable to meet.
From the country of Iuste, he lost much of his fortune after a four-year famine.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v92/greenabsinthe/fartemis.jpg

Artemis Patroklé-
Artemis is a veteran soldier, who –at a young age- married his sweetheart, Elena. Tempted by war, he left her to join King Der on his campaign against Gracia, promising to return in a year’s time.
While at war, he indulged as soldiers often did, eventually losing sight of his morality, and seeing people as objects to be claimed or killed.
He returned two years after he had departed, having enjoyed battle so much, and having been hailed as one of the greatest swordsmen in the Belligerian army.
What he found, however, was that only a month before his arrival, his village had been burned and pillaged by Gracian soldiers. His wife –and the love of his life- was dead.
Those who survived the attack told him of the events that took place after he had left- how they had been warned of the attack, but how his wife had stayed behind to retrieve a child who had wandered off.
Artemis rejoined the army, but this time with a quest and goal of his own in his mind.
His fame grew as his skill seemed to be ignited by a new passion. Few understood that every Gracian he killed, he imagined to be the murderer of his wife- and unmet daughter.
Artemis is practical and blunt, with little in the way of apathy or compassion. He is motivated by guilt, and will not rest until he gets revenge on the one who he believes took away his family- Ishia.

Game Overview:
I’m. No. Math. Person.

Numbers make me physically sick.

As such, the main features of my game are the story, the script, the artwork, and the music. The soundtrack features some original music, and much of the artwork is original. As well (I doubt it matters to most people, but…), since it’s the story of a time and place, as much as it’s a story of people, there is careful attention to cultures in the way of dress, features, architecture, languages, names, traditions, attitudes, and religions.
I HAVE enhanced my game a bit, though, just so it’s not like playing every other rm2k3 game. So don’t worry.

Yes, I've been working on this game for a long time. What happened was that I got a new PC, saved most of the files for my game, but missed the project file. So I ended up remaking it, with only the resources I salvaged. I'm glad I did, though, because the plot (while the same) is now told in a way which I think works much better than before.

Oh yes, and in case you missed it in the trailer, you steal my facesets and you die. Seriously they took almost 20 hours.

Yes, that’s all for now. Watch the trailer cause I said so.
