Also, I always pronounced it "eer-in-ey-oo" for some odd reason

Man, I loved that show. Bill Nye's an actual scientist, too. One who does actual science.

He's my hero. He's actually convinced me that Pluto isn't a planet. Without hearing his thoughts, I never would have been swayed.

IIRC, he was an engineer before he broke into TV with the 'Back to the Future' show. His name, in fact, came from that show!
See, every episode had a little vingette at the end where Christopher Lloyd--that is, Doc--showed some science to the kiddies. Bill Nye was his 'assistant'. In one episode, the Doc mispronounced 'gigawatts' (he said 'jiggawatts'), and Bill Nye corrected him. Doc's responce"
