How nerdy are YOU?
« on: February 05, 2012, 09:59:19 AM »
Not sure what kind of values people outside of this-here-my-country puts into the word, but heck - I'm a nerd.

So after spending a bit more time doing those real life stuff I've come to realize what a difference it makes between being a nerdy nerd and a casual nerd. Some people just play games and are fine with that, not at all taking in the whole cultural side of things. When a starcraft player doesn't know that starcraft is made by the same people as WoW - that's a bit worrying.  I still am a nerd at heart but it can be days before I actually sit down and pop in some game or messes around with an editor/maker these days while I spend more or less every waking hour on it some few years back. Didn't saw that one coming.
Still, the practical stuff isn't all that matters.

Me, honestly I'm continuing to bunking up on pokemon games, I'm getting that new Arceus from the pokemon site by joining that dream world thing and getting a pokemon trainer licence. I custom made some monsters from Monster hunter in Lego and ordered them, next to my computer I have a miniature Hoothoot and Lugia figure, a Lego zergling and in a drawer by the desk is the collection of my WoW gamecards.
I also have the card/art-stuff from the Birth by sleep and 3rd birthday collectors edition in a wide frame on a shelf behind me next to a collection of fantasy novels and the Necromonicon. I have both a Gameboy, a GB colour, a GB SP and a DS (and I'm really tempted to get a 3ds)stacked in a cupboard as well as a wii, GC and N64 connected to the tv in my room.

So, the question is :  How nerdy are you guys?

I used to be a huge nerd, but then I took a girlfriend to the knee.

Seriously, though, I'm not as much of a nerd as I used to. And while it could be just a coincidence, it all happened after I met Natako and even more after I got a job.

I'm still kind of a nerd, though. I mean, I still play games and all, but way less than I used to.
There are days where I don't even play at all because I seriously don't feel like it. But there are also days where I really want to play something, but those are rare.
I've been from like 8+ hours of gaming a day to like 0-2 hour(s), more often below one.

Thing is... I want to play games, but I don't feel like it. As weird as that sound.

So, yeah... I'm still kind of a nerd, mostly because no other type of person fits me.

Yeah so I'm pretty ****ing nerdy. But there's a difference between a nerd and a geek.

Nerds subscribe to certain genres of culture that have similar attributes- honestly I think nerds are just people who love adventure, exploration, story-telling and hearing, and who have a sense of nostalgia for the things we loved when we were young (fairy tales, movies about heroes etc). It's not about liking things because they're "nerdy" (we're not ****ing hipsters). Nerdy is a culture of adventure and hero stories (some more interactive than others). Think about it- what do nerds love? Star Wars, video games, Firefly, Indiana Jones, Superheroes, etc... we love characters who are larger than life and who go on adventures we can never hope to go on ourselves.

Honestly, I think it's because of this that I'm an actress- if you can't go on adventures, might as well play people who do.

So yeah, I'm proud to be a nerd. And I'm proud to share a sense of adventure with all of you.

Also I felt some pride for our people and tweeted this (though twitter's character limit somewhat butchered what I wanted to say):

"A nerd is simply one who dwells in the world spun to them as a child; who never stopped believing in adventure, valour, love, and the defeat of giants."

I'm a fat-***, I watch cartoons, I like metal, and I play video games too much. When I'm not doing that, I'm watching porn (and possibly stalking some of you), reading books steeped heavily in fantasy or sci-fi lore, or watching a movie that falls into the nerd category. I don't think that I can escape being called a nerd.

And yet, everyone loves me. I'm that one-in-a-million ultra-nerd who also has a great personality. No enemies, and even when I'm trying to be difficult, I can make people like me.

Personality-wise I think I'm pretty middling. I'm not the life of the party, but I'm at the party because some other people wanted me to be there. I get by. Being a dashing rogue really helps.

On the other hand, I'm a software developer who plays D&D 3.5, WoD and Magic: the Gathering and spends a fair portion of his day on the internet. Thing is, I know a lot of really cool people who do the same. I don't know if it's a Britain/North America thing, but the stereotypical "nerd" doesn't seem to occur over here.

I still remember how to play runescape. I sit in school alot and write develop storylines for the game i'm making on rm2k3. I pre-ordered ffxiii-2, and love it. My nerd-classifiable game collection for the ps3 consists of the following:
Oblivion (gota)
Skyrim
Final fantasy xiii
Final fantasy xiii-2
Demons Souls
Agarest Generations of War
Resonance of Fate
Disgaea 3 and 4
 :3

oh i see specifics... alrighty here is the more convincing stuff

I'm skinny. Long skater hair. Wear glasses (vision is bad because of gaming, actually :D). I live off of mountain dew and snack food. I read manga alot, and i love animes. I have an odd fascination with japan and Japanese-orientated things, so i guess that explains why a huge percentage of my games are japanese-designed rpgs... I have played (and beaten) final fantasy 1-10, 13, all 3 tactics. On this laptop i have vba, with Summon Night 1 and 2, tactics ogre, ff1-6 (not 3), Onimusha Tactics, yeah. I love asian food, japanese especially, above all other foods, except maybe some carribean treats.. i dont sleep, and when i'm not sitting on my *** playing games, i go with my old friend outside to walmart, and we shout in mock gypsy and russian. There. the life of a nerd.

I collect old video gaming systems/games. My collection highlights a Commodore 128 with all of the accessories and about sixty games, a complete Boxed Super Mario World SNES set, and a slowly growing NES library of 68 games (24 boxed), a complete ROB, and the tools to make reproduction carts. I've learned the basics of at least eight programming languages (I just don't have the motivation to go further), including one that has been outdated for twenty years. I follow two anime series without American releases, and have started a solo translation project of a game from a series that probably won't last very long over here.

Yeah.

I think I spent more on games last semester than books.  Holy christ.  On my wall, I have a Fallout poster, a TF2 and a map of the Soviet Union.  I prefer to count in binary on my hands.  (So much more efficient!)  I routinely rail on my friends for making things far more inefficient than they need to be.  While some prefer to party, sometimes I wind up having minecraft LAN parties.

I do the Russian bit.  Substitute the Gypsy with German, though.

I play (and design) tabletop RPGs, am a huge fan of RPing and spend way too much time playing videogames. I'm probably pretty high up there.

*Randomly posts in thread*

I consider myself a nerd. It goes mostly into my music. I love classical, funk, soul, gospel, metal, country, theater music, and I study music theory like crazy. I will spend every waking hour just practicing on guitar while having fun doing it. I kinda stopped playing videogames. The only game I'm really interested in is FFXIII Vs. I'm actually really interested in RPG Maker VX Ace and will buy it when it comes out. I blame two bastard friends of mine for getting me into Magic. I got really good at the game and spent a pretty penny on my current deck.

I still get a little mad when someone calls me a nerd to my face, like I'm beneath them or something. This usually ends in some kind of fight. I also love going out on the weekends. Club/Bar+Friday/Saturday+Friends=Awesome.
