Ico. I got to play a little bit of it. Didn't get to finish. Ended up buying Shadow of the Colossus and obsessed over it. Believing I wouldn't get to play it, I eventually watched the ending to Ico. Was able to go back and play Ico, and even spoiled, I still found it an incredibly moving experience.

I also think everyone should play at least one Final Fantasy game. (At least one before XIII. I hate that one.) My favorite RPG is Vagrant Story, but I've always felt like I've taken something important away after finishing one of the Final Fantasy games.

I'd pick SMB 3. My personal favorite Mario game.

Super Mario World
Chrono Trigger
Portal

That's about it as far as very strong recommendations

I'd say Goldeneye, but the graphics make it completely unplayable at this point. Which is a shame, because it was frickin amazing.

Graphics? If anything makes it unplayable, it's the damn spring-aim. The rest of the controls are barely passable (which can also be said for a number of classic shooters) and the AI is thick as mud, but I can play through all of it except for the spring-aim. I hated it then, and I'm spoiled now.

I'm also not a graphics whore, so that side never could affect my ability to play it.

Umm...

FF6
FF7
FF8
Fire Emblem (the GBA one)
Mech commander

They're my five favourite games! Maybe.  I looove them.  Each one has had a big impact on my life.  Especially the final fantasies.  It's cliche but it's true.

I've been meaning to go back and replay LoD. I haven't been able to play through an RPG lately, I always stop in the middle or beginning.

I kind of agree with Sai and Jesus. Chrono Trigger is a must for RPGs. It's fun, the worlds and characters are unique to other RPGs, it's fairly easy to get into and has a fairly unique but fun battle system. I never felt like I had to grind in that game until the very end, but everything still felt just as difficult as it should be.

But It's different for each genre, if someone asked me what RPG, I'd say Chrono Trigger though it'd be a close tie with Super Mario RPG, if asked about platformer it would be Super Mario Bros 3 (even though I love Metroid).

Believe it or not, I didn't like it.
A game comprised of quick time events?
I don't care HOW good the story is, I'm not sludging through a game made up of one the most hated modern game...things.

I watched someone play some heavy rain.  It seemed cool, but watching it was enough for me.

Well, you don't have to sludge through it. You can actually beat the game without pressing a single button for any quick-time event. Of course a lot of bad things will happen... but still the same.
I viewed the quick-time events as more of a relation to real life. Some of my characters died the first play-through because my reflexes were not fast enough (a lot like real life). However, I still reached the conclusion of the story, and found it to be a very well made game.

It is completely story driven. If you got decently far and had no interest, it probably won't be any fun to you. If you didn't even make it to the death of a character or the first trial that Ethan has to go through, I would give it another shot. It is easily beatable in one sitting, so rent > buy.

As good as TES is as a series, I feel that it just isn't important enough to be a must-play. If any game is worthy, it's Daggerfall or Morrowind.

I'm borrowing Heavy Rain from a friend, but I've yet to start playing. He made sure before I borrowed it that I knew about its all-QTE nature, and that I was cool with it. I told him "yeah, I know, and I want to play it anyway".

Maybe I'll play it after I finish beating MGS3. It's my first time playing it, what with my never owning a PS2 thing. MGS HD collection is pretty nice.

E.T. for Atari 2600. I'm serious. Too many are bandwagoning without giving it a real shot. It's crap. No question. But, not nearly worthy of the criticism it receives.  But, I have bad taste. Didn't last more than one play session on Link to the Past or Chrono Trigger.

Nice to see that you've joined us, Lucas...

I never got Skyrim. People talked about it endlessly, but it seemed like the majority of the things they were talking about were complaints and mods. I guess it's the kind of game that eats a lot of hours. Once people put it down, they never said another word about it.
