Ineed serious help with fixing a computer here are the details
Dear Anyone,
It is very complicated but Ill try to explain the best I can
I tried to open a program but it wouldn’t so I restarted it (not using the start menu). Now when it was starting up it shows a blank black screen for about 5 seconds. Then it says the blue Hewlett Packard screen then the computer beeps and shows the cloudy Windows 98 screen for about two seconds then it beeps and goes to this black screen. I’ll try to explain:
Microsoft Windows 98 startup Menu
1. Normal
2. Logged (\BOOTLOG.TXT)
3. Safe Mode
4. Step-by-step confirmation
5. Command prompt only
6. Safe Mode command prompt only
Enter a choice: 5
Warning: Windows has detected a registry/configuration error.
Choose, Command prompt only, and run SCANREG.
F5= Safe Mode Shift+F5=Command prompt Shift+F8= Step-by-step configuration
So I choose command prompt only and it names all these files that are missing or corrupted and it scans for viruses finds none an says:
Cannot find WIN.COM, unable to continue loading windows
C:\>
And everything else I choose goes back to there in one way or another. Except for Choice 3, Safe Mode, it goes to here:
Microsoft Windows 98 startup Menu
7. Normal
8. Logged (\BOOTLOG.TXT)
9. Safe Mode
10. Step-by-step confirmation
11. Command prompt only
12. Safe Mode command prompt only
Enter a choice: 5
Warning: Windows has detected a registry/configuration error.
Choose, Command prompt only, and run SCANREG.
The following file is missing or corrupted: C:\WINDOWS\HIMEM.SYS
The following file is missing or corrupted: C:\WINDOWS\DBLBUFF.SYS
The following file is missing or corrupted: C:\WINDOWS\IFSHLP.SYS
Microsoft ® Windows 98
© Copyright Microsoft Corp 1981-1998
So, can you help me? I know its hard but please try
Sincerely,
Programmer
Oh and I might need the Windows disk so please send the info directly

Win.com is the executable file responsible for Windows start-up. It runs after the autoexec.bat file is processed, and it accesses the VMM32.vxd file. Or, in simpler terms, it is windows, sortof. Like, back when it was win 3.x, win.com was what ran when you typed win in DOS.
The three .sys files you mentioned are drivers that deal with hardware. Himem is an extended memory buffer driver, ifshlp is a 32 bit file system handler driver, and dblbuff is a double buffer driver that is needed for compatibility with some hard disks.
What the hell did you do to lose these?
The following is to be done at your own risk. You've been warned.
Search around for a CD from Hewlett Packard or Microsoft that says System Restore. After sticking it in and booting up the computer, it SHOULD give you the option of going to windows or running the CD. Run the CD, and look for three choices -
1.Replace System Files - Just installs a bunch of system files, and overwrites the ones you have.
2.Delete Registry - Self Explanitory
3.Wipe HD and re-install Windows - Self Explanitory
I'd chose choice #1. If that doesn't work, post again and I'll find some downloads of the missing files and solutions to your problem.
