I see no fault with the overlay. I do feel that your map is (and often are) too crowded. Strip it down to only what's important, and they're nothing more than strips. There, that's my two cents... continue with the overlay criticism.

They are crowded because my maps are ABS maps. If I put to much space in it, you'll be able to walk by to many enemies, and get ganged up on to easily.
As to the forests, it looks fine. Sorta looks like it's lacking effort, and more just pre-made on the chipset, but if you make the entire forest look like that, it will look fine. It all depends on how you want your mapping, be it open like what you've got, insanly detailed like what Robotam does, or crowded and detailed like mine.

Bah, ToP chipset. I tried, but nothing much came out. I would suggest another chipset, but that's just me. Something like the one I used a page or two back might suit you better.
However, I also know that screenshots tell a must different story then in-game "shots" do, so it all depends.
Cool lillies, but look at a real body of water. Lillies tend to float in 'packs' and not just hang around randomly. Most times the majority will be near solid surfaces. Your walls for example. While some do float solo, you should make more clumps.
In reality, when you see a reflection, it shouldn't be an exact mirror image of the object it is reflecting. Depending on the angle you're looking at it, it should be slightly distorted (usually through compression). Otherwise, it seems like the objects exist underwater and are being seen from the top, as opposed to being reflections

You might have to take of the >BR on the end of the link. To get all of them, go to Charasets then click on the letter W (If you don't already have them.) Also make everything in the water transparent. Use events to do that. And don't make the water look so box cut.

New thingie. It's the critical bar. It flashes red from time to time, and if you swing your sword while it's still red, you land a critical blow, which is 1.5 times as powerful as a normal blow. I've been working on adding more to the HUD. Like, when you cast a spell, a bar appears under the health numbers telling you how long you have untill the spell is recharged. I also want to make a sort of "Mental Health" that could also cause you do die. It would go down when you take damage, but it would go down the same rate regardless of what the damage is. It would also go down when you use a spell, read a scroll, or get a status effect like silence placed on you. I dunno if people would like that, or if it would just **** them off.

DB: The problem with the font is the pixel space between letters. Sometimes it's one, sometimes it's two, and I think I even saw three in one place. That's ok if it's supposed to be between the words, but it doesn't appeal very much if it's between the letters in a word.

Any swordsmaster could beat a warrior. Warriors have horrid defence and accuracy(add in the swordmaster's evade as well), as well as evade. The only way they would win is luck.

It's no where near finished, but I think it looks cool. I'm working on finding matching stuff to put in it. The shadows are set up like Mac & Blue and Theodore. It even has lights even though I don't show them.

EDIT: That pictures looks positioned just fine to me fortet. Just experiment with the X and Y coordinates. X is the horizontal axis(positive number push the picture to the right, negative push the picture to the left) and Y is the vertical axis(positive numbers push the picture up, negative number push the picture down). Hope that helps.

The holes in the walls and floor are really great additions, but if the place is 700 years old, you may want to consider breaking it down a little more than that. Dude, the hats totally should give different abilities. The rad factor would rise exponentiallyyeah but as far as i can tell game players dont like prioritizing. and that would be a problem. you get abilities by finding hidden shrines throughout the world and you use them by mashing button combos.

I was actually interested when I first saw the map in the Off-Topic game thread. Brighton is where you live, right? Is the town named after it, or does it represent it in any way/shape/form?
And Bluhman, I originally wanted to post this to tell you that I love your little shop you've got towards the bottom of the screen, but I felt I should post the above too :P
Again, that's just the file name, and that in itself is a bit of a joke because Brighton Townline Road is an actual street around my parts.
But in reality, the town here itself is not Brighton; it's called Nothgirb. Which is just Brighton backwards. :P
As for Phayre's map, I don't think more houses are really in need, especially if its a REALLY small village; you just need to liven up the negative space. Aside from that, the only other thing that bothers me is how every single house has a very basic form; two that are boot shaped and two that are block shaped. I think you might be using a chipset incapable of making extremely advanced shapes, but try some other things out; C-shaped houses, houses that bend, vary it up.

Yeah, the chipsets done by this guy (http://wato5576.hp.infoseek.co.jp/map.html#) are top tier; I'm thinking of switching over to them in Alpha Force as well.
I don't know what kind of languge that is, but I can't read it. As for using them for the Alpha Force, better make sure you can make modern element for them and convert them too. I like the old chips though. They clash a little, but they add realism to the game.

Eh, that map is very lacking. I can understand your desire for open space for the gameplay, which is good and something I often have trouble with... but come on. From the looks of things, your map consists of two different wall tiles and two auto tiles. You should really put in some objects on the floors and walls, and liven things up with a varying floor tile. If you're going for an ancient temple look, then add some urns/vases, torch stands, wall paintings, etc. If you want ruins, then add cracks, statues, vines, etc.
I know you said you're looking for a chipset, which could very well mean that the chipset you're using right now isn't the one that will be in the finished game... but saying something on the lines of "These arn't the graphics I plan on using" then posting a map isn't exactly orthadox.
You did a good job at sectioning off each room and connecting them with long halls. Making the long halls into stair ways would make them seem less like... long halls haha.

I like that AoA reference, Fish. Also, your room looks pretty sweet. I think you should at least try to find some of those same objects without outlines, though. They kind of clash with the environment.
The ghost poké and the ships need lighter outlines to match the rest of it. Everything else is fine though.

No, it's in the background. The battles are supposed to give you that confined feeling of Final Fantasy I. While still having cool-looking monsters.

I think the idea is cool, but youre gonna have to find a way to stretch your DBS lower window a bit upward, otherwise it will be too small to keep the attention of. the window content clutters an already small area.

also made a particle system that spew out smoke when you use the jet pack.

Hey Felix. Your health bar decreases as you get hit. What piece of coding do you have
to make this happen? I have a box with health in which changes depending on how much
health you have using conditional branches. But I've put it so "If health = 15 then show
picture "health = 15"" etc. The problem is that it doesn't replace the picture, it only changes
the picture if I make the common event disappear then reappear.

Well, I did make all 4 sprites (front and back for each one) myself, as well as editing the moves and stats on both of them.
Plus, its not just any pokémon hack, its a charas themed pokémon hack. You would get it if you were here for longer.
Which doesn't really remind me of the Pokemon style.
Fish, if you edit something, its edited, not custom. Custom sprites means its 100% yours.

The thing in the right side, in the hole, wasn't there when I took the shot, but I put it in afterwards since it'll be there soon. =P It doesn't look as good as it normally does because the rest of the shot is tinted, and its not blah blah blah blah.

Meiscool may have been able to make awesome maps with his chipsets, but for someone else to use his chipsets and make anything other than what meiscool intended them for is just one frustration after another. When I found out I'd have competely event the entire canopy of leaves for one forest I stopped. No way was I about to spend four hours, per map, plugging in confusing treetop events.

Your maps need a bit more detail, but other than that, they're fine.
Also, Character Models look a bit out of place. Especially in your first pic.

I'm going to be 100% honest and blunt here.
Those maps are flat, boring, and they look like they were made by a computer, and not a human being, or at least not a human being with actual feelings or the ability to show them. Though some computer programs have the ability to make better maps, nowdays.
You have too many sharp edges that don't look real at all, you would never see them on a forest. Trees are living things that don't grow on straight lines. Your city is also very empty and boring. I suppose its a medieval city, and from your description, a big one. Those were crowded, full of people. There's nobody there but the main character and one guard. Where are all the people, where's the life of the city? Add people, add animals. Dogs, cats. Not sure if that screen is of a castle or something, but there were usually no streets and sideways like there are today. You could think about adding some dirt or whatever. The last screen... Again, empty and boring. Rivers usually have some sort of vegetation around them, and even if they don't, the soil around it will be different. Not regular grass like you have there. You have those small trees there, they look bad. They are full grown trees that are probably meant for some sort of world map. But they're tiny, so it looks like they were shrinked by some sort of bizarre magic instead of being young or small trees. Your monsters... You have the skeleton from Minish Cap, that doesn't matches the style of your game very well, that dude that seems to be from some final fantasy game if I remember right, and some random slime. The slime has too much contrast. All of them appear to have been colored one day, until you or someone else removed all saturation, but forgot to fix the contrast and etc. It just doesn't looks good.
This needs a lot of work as you can see. I'm not telling you to give up. I'm telling you to work.
You can use Events to add trees, rocks, etc.That I can, and will. But for the Boundary Trees I can't do so. The tree's in the forest that give the map the shape.
As for the sprites (Skeleton, Ghost, Slime), I might be wrong but they look like they come from the PSX RPG Maker.
Oh yeah, I meant for lone/small trees, bushes, etc.

When I save it from PNG to 256, it loses quality. Before with old paint I could do this without quality loss as long as I hadn't edited it first.... Dear Odin this is aggravating.
I have no clue how you did this before without losing quality. I've never used an MS Paint that hasn't made it lose quality when saving 256 colors. You will have to save it in another program like Ultimate Paint or PSP.F'ing paint. how does it work.
Just save the image regularly (24-bit) then open in it PaintShopPro or Ultimate Paint and then save in 256 colors...link?

On the note of photoshop. I've never managed to make it give me a transparent background to sprites and such without screwing them up somehow.I only learned how to make it not mess them up like two days ago.
Felix, it was suggested not to make it look deeper. It was suggested so that your maps dont suck. You can change the tileset all you want, but even though youve grown as a mapper, you still have a ways to go.
Try a mist or fog or texture overlay. Would make your map blend really well

A lot of times when things look out of place it's because the colors don't match. You could try picking a uniform color palette and applying to everything in the chipset. It's a bit of tedious work but it can pay off.
Some objects are too bright or too dull compared to the rest of the graphics in the map. Change the colors, make them look more natural. Its like when you are painting a wall. You don't normally paint bright pink in a room full of dark tinted objects. (Not best example... but whatever.)

Well, the buildings at the top I havent touched yet. Like I said, the map is still in production so I just have the base of it set up. Most of the buildings will be accessible through front doors or side doors.
As for the building heights...the only one that I see is weird is the one to the right, on the bottom, that you pointed out. The clothesline looks fine to me because the buildings are separated and far apart enough for there to be a height difference...also they are different size buildings.
FYI this is a hard chipset to work with!

You have no idea how much that road intersection is bothering me, but its not because its bad, but its just me.
I don't know if I like the fence the whole way around, but I'm not sure... Also, I'd move the windows in towards eachother one. Since its not finished there isn't much else I can say.

Cool thing about this is it's not a mock up.
Uncool thing is it's still fairly early development, though it feels like a good chunk of the battle system has been coded.
Do you use temporary variables at all? If you have a lot of similar variables that need computing, they can be really helpful. All you do is set up a seperate event, like a common event, then store the information in temp variables, call the event that does all the computing, then apply the values in the temp variables where they're needed. This cuts down on conditional braches and centralizes important code. So if there's a bug, you know exactly where it is, or atleast can find very quickly.
Did that make any sense?
I personally have always thought other types of CBS would be harder to code than an ABS. For ABS, the movement is already done for you. Creating actions is a very simple process. For a CBS, you have to program each individual party member and create some sort of AI, If not for members, then for enemies. Such has making it know who to target (Who CAN be targeted, for that matter) and what skill to use, and other tactics. Creating the menu system seems tough as well.
In an ABS, there is no need to make an AI because the player directly controls the hero and foes only have one hero to target. Of course, this is all just my oppinion. If it's a piece of cake to you, then awesome! ^-^

If you remember the desert village that I posted, this is the actual desert "dungeon" if you will, that will accompany it.
