for firewall you could use kerio personal firewall free version.
and you should get spybot search and destroy to get rid of most spyware.

A. Free
B. Good

Choose one.
lol, but seriously, I don't know. I've got Norton's, and it's never done me wrong. But it's not free.

I use AVG and Spybot and it hasn't failed me.

I just do a weekly spyware check and a monthly virus scan. Of course, not going to questionable sites helps as well.

I go to a bunch of those "questionable sights", and AVG's still keeping a good rep with me. I've got a spyware program, but I can't remember which one, nor do I care to look and find out.

Right now I don't have anything to protect my computer. Then again, I'm using windows vista, and there really isn't many viruses and such made for it *yet*. Anyway, I hate norton, it pretty much killed the last system I used it on. Ad-aware is a great spyware/adware program, with that and spybot, you shouldn't have any problems with spyware or adware. They're both free, so thats a plus.

Anyway, I never recomment norton, I hate norton. Anyway, to get rid of a virus on my computer, I usually use a combonation of programs consisting of hijack this, pocket kill box, and a few others like that, they'll get rid of pretty much everything, but if you don't know what you're doing or how to use them, you'll delete some important files and scew up your computer worse than the virus, so I don't recommend using those on your own, BUT, if you know the name of the virus, you can search google with it, and a lot of times there'll be a solution on how to get rid of it using hijack this.

Hell Yeah! Just recovered all my old rm2k/3 games from my 10 year old, broken laptop hard drive that had been formatted and had a new OS installed on it. Oh, and I did all of this from my phone. WIN
