Sample w/ Original Engine
« on: June 25, 2006, 08:13:42 PM »
As I mentioned in my introduction post, the company I own & operate is hard at work at a 2D MMO engine that is slowly coming together. I was playing with the character sprite generator and thought I'd plug a sprite I concocted into our engine~ The result is below!

I think something more cartoonish, such as something from LoZ MC, would fit better.

The house looks a little weird, but methinks that's because it has a black outline, while the other things just have some darker-yet-the-same-color outlines.

The tiles are makeshift, actually. Someone working with the game earlier had created them and we were using them to test the engine.

Part of the reason for joing here was to see if anyone was as skilled with tiles as they are with the sprites, see if we couldn't find some help in that department.

Wait... No aggressive criticism? What? Who are you, and what have you done to Meiscool?!

The house looks a little weird

I think it has something to do with the roof. It lacks proper shading, and it seems a little low on the sides.

If you need tiles, go to the charas home page and look in the complete resource section, and look through the chipsets. Granted, you're probably going to have to change the format to make them work in your engine, but it shouldn't be too hard.

But yeah, you're gonna need better tiles and map design in the future.

Hell Yeah! Just recovered all my old rm2k/3 games from my 10 year old, broken laptop hard drive that had been formatted and had a new OS installed on it. Oh, and I did all of this from my phone. WIN

Oh yea, of course.
The engine was the important thing, but its been collecting mothballs as of late. Making some of the final alterations, however, will be a cinch, and having sprite and tile resources will help speed things along.

1. Get me out of your game.
2. Get better sprites than RPG Maker sprites, please? *barfs*
3. Anything besides overworld movement yet?

lol-
Before the last major overhaul, we had a turn based battle system finished, a basic menu system, and a scripting language.
Right now, the sections are in pieces, but the scripting language is about ready to go back in, better system overall.

As for the sprites, we're looking for a top-down SNES style system. Reliable sprite artists are pretty difficult to come by, but if we can get better that'd be great.
The tabletop RPG is being wrapped up now, our playtesters really like the system we've developed, so we're looking back into the MMO, in the hopes that the two will bolster each other.

As for "Moose", thats been my own nickname forever (and now the name of my puppy), so "Moose" stays, sorry.

As I get more done, I'll post some screens.
To speed development along, I'm looking at scrapping the current plan of using a Scripting Language for everything and just predefining the NPCs, much as I already do with signs~
