First Town
« on: August 03, 2006, 10:17:45 PM »
Alright, the first town is supposedly named Resan. It needs a better name.

All that's known about it is that Jefferson and Tark live there, Tark likes to invent stuff, and JEfferson's past and all that.

Since we're going along before we really got some of the changes down with the story, there's a few things I'd like to go over:

1.Tark - Inventing the gun, telephone, and steam engine HAS to go. What other low-tech inventions can he make?
2.Jefferson's name - He needs a better one.
3.Jefferson's weapon - Since guns are out, should we go with swords or something else?
4.Learning the battle system and first dungeon - how should we do this? Have a monster attack, and then chase them down to a cave just outside of the town? Should someone, an older person perhaps, accompany Jefferson to help him?

Perhaps Tark can invent some kind of machine that he uses o distract or hurt the Vampire when he attacks - so that when JEfferson gets back from the cave, the Vampre is attacking and Tark is hurt after he attempts and fails to hurt it? Come on people, we need ideas. :P

He could invent the crossbow, archimedes screw, stuff like that.

Jefferson's new name could be Jeffrin. Kinda like the old one, except it doesn't sound like Jefferson completely.

Jefferson should be as cliché as possible, but we need some originality. Instead of a sword, how about a dirk, or a Seljuk curved sword.

To introduce the battle system, we should probably have the villiage band together to defeat the vampire, and have some warrior and Jefferson go into the cave to draw the vampire out. If the player somehow is about to die, we could have a battle command that sates when hero:jefferson: health at 25%or lower, "Message: Help! We're dieing!" or something like that and a villiager joins the party temporarily to help defeat the vampire.

Ooo me like that idea. lol.

As far as weapons go, just give him a weak dagger, or like a butcher's cleaver. lol.  He can upgrade to a sword later if need be.  Maybe after being trained by someone, who knows.

Maybe instead of a Jefferson, go even more cliche.  Kind of common name that one would expect to be in a game alot.  Or you could be lazy and just call him jeff.

As for inventions, how bout u just stick him in one general field.  One of my characters in a scrapped manga was a tech genius who specialized in robotics.  He could be a compression engineer or something, then you could use air guns still.  O2 tanks, Make shift sub, like a pump air rifle.  He could also use his compression tech for making propulsion for some type of tiny vehicle, that could break down early in the game.  Or it could even be like a toy sized car that he turns into life size near the end.  It could be like a spring key cars, though with a pump instead of a key and a compression tank near the back.  Idk im just brainstorming.

If you really wanted to go low low tech, he could invent things like telescopes, and one of those build a better mouse trap things that takes massive amount of planning and building to do a simple outcome.  Like automated breakfast cooker.  I can just imagine it.  It could involve bowling balls, balloons, strings, fans.  That would make an awesome scene when the players first take Jeff to Tark's house for some reason or another.

K i better stop.  Too much thoughts going on at once.  Dont want to take up too much space.

Edit: i just read about Tark helping Jeff.  If you go with my compression thing or maybe even remote control (radio waves and such), he could have a tiny tank toy that shoots pelles, which he alters to shoot wooden stakes or garlic or something. Or garlic coated pellets. lol

Make Jefferson a Spainish Espadon wielder.

Short for that: Fencer.

Well we can't have them plan against the vampire or anything - it's not like he lives in the cave and is a ravenous monster. I assumed you people read the story. :P The vampire just kinda attacks out of nowhere and throws the town into chaos.

Besides, these are people who are still milking cows and raising pigs for a living. Compression or steam powered stuff isn't going to be that possible. I do like the telescope idea though. Hum... mebbe.

I was thinking more along the lines of, as Jefferson leaves the town, a jelly or equivalent low level monster attacks, and some old warrior guy (not decked out in full armor or anything, but not a farmer) helps him kill it, and then they go to the local cave to find out why there's been so many jelly attacks lately.

That 25% health idea could work really well for the Vampire fight though - if the player is loosing, the old warrior finishes the vampire off and the fight ends with reduced experience or something.

As for Jeffin... er, I think we could do a little better than that. :P

lol, jeffrin was a kind of weird idea. I had an idea that Tark could invent the crossbow, and he and some villiagers plan to ambush the vampire using his new weapon. Jefferson and some other guy come to lead the vampire into the ambush by running up to him and taunting him, and then running in the direction of the ambush. Everything goes to plan, until Jefferson's partner taunts the vampire, and when they turn to run, the guy trips, and they have to face him there.

I know how to make a custom telescope system. I read a tut on it from RPG2knet.

Or even better, he could invent a sniper crossbow by putting a telescope on a crossbow, and that's how they could attempt to ambush the vampire!

I'm not digging this whole ambush idea - why can't Jefferson and/or Raid just finish him off by themselves? Townspeople should be, well, townspeople, and run around screaming like the NPCs that they are. :P

EDIT: No, we don't need a telescope system or anything, everything Tark invents doesn't need to function or anything. Besides, if we keep putting in things like that it'll start to get gimmicky - shoving as many innovative tidbits of code as possible does not make a game good.

Well, if Jefferson and Raid are from a farming villiage, how would they be seasoned as warriors enough to defeat a fully-fledged evil vampire? :P

I understand what you are saying about the telescope system, it was just I had one as an ABS, modified as a sniper. We don't need to have a whole system for a sniper crossbow, but I think the whole ambush thing could be a starting point for a better intro.

Thrall is the Viking word for "slave". Not saying it's a bad name, just doesn't fit the town theme. How about Farsthoen?

Personally, I like the name Jefferson for this character.  And as for inventions, lets maybe look to Da Vinci for inspiration?  I mean, he made a robot that worked on cables and pulleys.  That be cool for Tark.

Tomi's right. Da Vinci would be prefect to look for some stuff.

Edit: Looked up some inventions by Da Vinci.

He invented a kind of crossbow, as well as a tank, catapult, and a helicopter. We could use this helicopter as an airship later in the game, maybe to get to the top of the Overlord's castle where Jeff has to find his way to the throne room.
