How do you program an event where the hero isn't present?

What do you mean? An event where you see stuff happening but the hero isn't on screen? You can use the event 'hero transparency on/off'. Transparent means invisible.

Also changing graphic to "none" works.

If you're using RM2K/3 that's how you can make the camera pan, by having the invisible player move around.

I'm pretty sure there is a camera pan function.
