What this forum needs is less love, if you ask me.

The average forum consists of a bunch of normal members, a group of members who are popular and everyone knows(a small group), some moderators and global mods, and a few admins.

Traditionally, the head admin gathers a few close friends and makes them admins because he trusts what they do. Global mods and mods are picked from good, active members. The admin tells the mods exactly how the rules are to be enforced, and what should and shouldn't be locked. There's really a minimal space for interpretation, as the admin is head and he decides what goes on his forum.

The upper crust members are members who post often and have an opinion that most people agree on or can at least understand their point of view. The lower crust consists of members who don't post that often or have only been to the site for a little while. There's a clear seperation of who is who.

The mods enforce the rules. Period. Becuase they have been told by the admin what is what, they know when the rules are being broken, and members don't feel that the mod is doing wrong because the rules are clear.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Charas. Charas is a different place. The one wildcard here is that we have a lot of members, which one would suspect would lead to the model above.

Some say that Charas is different and that makes it good. But try to look at it in this light:

The upper crust here is the majority of members. It's not that hard to get noticed if you do the right things. It's way easier to become an individual here instead of one of the faceless masses. You feel valued, like your opinion counts.

The mods are much more personal and try to explain their actions to those who question them. The reason people even question their actions at all is because the mods are not instructed here. Alex appoints a mod, maybe puts them through a test, and lets them go as they will. Moderators at Charas are picked for their judgement. Alex sets the rules but doesn't clarify the interpretation of them. Thusly, one mod may disagree with another, embellished by their "individuality" gained from becoming one of the upper crust members.

Hell, even the active admin can't do anything without a vote. The mods have the power to overthrow the admin if they band together. People value their opinions far too much, and a clash of these opinions results in disaster. Truth be told, most of Charas is stupid. I don't claim to have acted smart myself, nor do I claim to be totally 100% correct - I'm contradicting myself by posting my opinion after saying that no one should value your opinion.

The fact is, moderators should not be freelancers hired to do their job, they should be agents recruited to enact the will of the admin while he works on more important things. Forums were not designed to be democratic. The creator has free reign, and if you don't respect it, he has the power to either make you respect it or to kick you out of his domain.

And the dissuasion among the mods promotes the questioning of their quality. Becuase the mods aren't in agreement, there are bound to be people disagreeing with your actions. And because of their hightened sense of individuality and their assumption that their opinion really holds any value, they impose their perogative to question these mods.

They also let their compassion get the best of them. Many members try to think that they're intelligent when they haven't even come of age.(Myself not excluded, but don't let that stop you from continuing. :P) They view the world in a skewed manner, where a criminal who commits a crime after someone commits a minor crime against them should be forgiven and the minor criminal should be the one ashamed of their actions.  Not only does this make no sense, it only promotes the other to do even more, as he has been handed exactly what he wanted: An excuse to commit more crimes. I am alluding to, of course, Raffles, but in an effort to ignore him, this paragraph will be the only mention of him.

So what does Charas need? It needs a slap in the face. Members need to realize that their opinion doesn't matter, and the mods need to realize that, as a team, they've got to look to their higher ups for guidance so they can coordinate. They need to realize that someone with more power them is someone that they answer to. They say Charas is not a democracy, but if so, why do the mods vote on who to ban?

And that is all I have to say about that.

Charas mod staff is too weak. Most other forums have a "locked, banned, stfu, my descision" policy.

If anything, this forum's too social for what it's been made for.

eh, guess you missed that war too. *ahem* eh..I'll just sum it up. MODs said "game related topics only people said "no" and a agreement was worked out.

Osmose, who are you to question this forum anyway? Forums are supposed to be fun, leasurely places to enjoy yourself, and Charas is brilliant in that aspect. If it got stricter, it would be worse. Much worse.

Are you saying if I became a mod I should be able to ban you and no-one should be able to stop me? :eyes:
