Paths of Fate
« on: November 28, 2005, 01:22:40 AM »
This is what I have so far, I think it's pretty good, but I need your opinion...

Storyline:
Every 2000 years a hero is born. The hero has power…but for good or for evil, it is up to him to decide. The story starts out with the hero, Orex. Orex has chosen his powers for good, and his destiny is set. Orex is overthrown by evil.

                 2000 Years Later

Zeza awakes to a bad dream. Zeza had a dream where a man was killed by an evil sorcerer. The boy takes a walk to think the dream over and finds Orex who he remembers from his dream as The Good Guy. Orex says that he is here to help Zeza learn skills and help him use his skills the correct way. Zeza accepts and Orex helps train him and helps him master his skills.  At the end Zeza's training, Orex cuts out his heart and put a curse on his heart and Zeza has two personalities: one good one evil...

Hm... I'm not sure I understand that last bit with the heart, or how the guy survived 2000 years. Who's the evil guy in this? I'm sorry, but it's a little cliche.

The guy died, and God (I haven't thought of a name for God yet) brought Orex back to life 2000 years later. Orex cuts out Zeza's heart and casts a spell on it so that there is an evil Zeza for Zeza to kill to complete his training. The evil guy will be Zeza's evil side.

It's cool that you can choose to be good or evil, but all in all, I think your story sounds very cliche. A hero that comes every 2000 years, for me, thats just a big turn off right there. Also, starting a game off with a dream is used almost as much as starting a game off where the hero's town is being destoryed, I suggest starting it off with some small quest, then that night have him have the dream.

I'll admit it's a little cliche. Dragonblaze, I'll try to think of an idea for him to start out on a mission, and then have the dream. Thanks for your comments!

EDIT: OK, I got it. In the beginning of the game, you'll play as Orex, back when he was a hero, and he will die. Then it will be 2,000 years later. Zeza will walk around, and then he will talk to someone. They will like put their hand on his head, and say something like "You are the hero. You will save us..." and Zeza will say "wha..." and then he will have the dream. Good?

The dream thing right then is a little abrupt.  Maybe get him drunk, he falls asleep, then has the dream!  More comedy!  j/k!
Heres an idea for you.  So you are walking down a path for some reason, and you have a feeling that you are being watched and followed.  So Zeza is really getting freaked out, and then the guy in black robes who was following him sneaks up behind him, and hits him in the back of the head with a staff. He then casts a spell on him saying, "Yes, he is the one."  And walks away.  Now Zeza has the dream.
Not bad though, cliche, but has potential.

Yeah, that sounds better :) But in the dream, don't make the "you are the hero. you will save us.." message so obvious. Make it a little more mysterious and foggy, and then build into that concept. Jumping into the hero concept right away can be a very bad idea. I've played games already where I was walking around and all of the sudden I talk to this guy and he says "Only you can save the world" or "You are the chosen one", it just kinda ruins the game to say it right off the bat. You don't have to spend much time at all building up to it but do a little something.

Image a cliff, the start of the game is the ground, the hero message is like the bottom of the cliff. The bottom of the cliff may be cool, but going striaght from the top to the bottom is probably a bad thing. If you can find a slope down or something it will make for a much nicter trip. Of course there are exeptions like paracuiting or bungee cord diving.. And there may be exeptions in your game.

I like that better. Thanks Tomi! Nice pose for my guy by the way. And, Dragonblaze, thanks, I'll keep that in mind.

Actually, I kinda like the gets drunk and has the dream thing a lot better, but whatever. Here's my idea:

A guy other then the main character has the dream. Then, it cuts to the main character. Thus, the play is aware of what's going on, but the main character isn't. It gives more to build off of in my opinion.

Anyways, it sounds over all good. Not as cliche as people make it out to seem in my opinion... but still cliche :p
