Isle Of Eve prototype
« on: February 23, 2006, 02:41:25 AM »
This is my first time posting here (yay) I hope this is in the correct section. If anyone sees this and feels there is section more suited where it will recieve more views then please move it :)

I am making an rpg game for my university project in vb.net 2003 using directx. This is has been coded from sratch. Not much to say about it other then it is 2D and over 2500 lines long and that is mainly used for the battle system. You won't be able to tell from playing it but it is pretty advanced (code wise) and quickly develops.

Not sure of the requirements but they seem to be low, currently using 40mb ram and 30% cpu usage (on an avergae system these days) 10% usage on mine.

download it here
http://www.axifile.com?2749903 3.5mb

You will need the .net enviroment installed on your pc to run this game, if you do not have it then please see the readme enclosed for a link.

This is still at prototype stage atm. so there are bugs, and other things that need to be coded.

If anyone downloads it let me know what you think. :)

Cool, I'll check it out :)

Oh, even though this is an actual programming thing, it should probably be in the games forum since it is a game. But whatever :p

Hmm, it seems like I don't have version 1.1 of the .net thingy installed on this computer. With my dial up, that'll take an hour. I'll have to wait till tomarrow to play it. I'll tell you what I think of it then.

Hell Yeah! Just recovered all my old rm2k/3 games from my 10 year old, broken laptop hard drive that had been formatted and had a new OS installed on it. Oh, and I did all of this from my phone. WIN

Ok, I  downloaded it, I played it, it wasn't too great. It's too incomplete. In the battle system, all the hero's time bars started at the same time, and they filled up at exactly the same rate. You should randomize it a little bit, or at least set it up so that it fills up faster for characters with high agilty or speed.

I couldn't find any 'back' option while battling. I selected magic, I selected heal just for the fun of it, but it automatically selecected one of the enemies, I pushed the escape button, but the thing shut down.

I couldn't select which monster I wanted to attack.

When I moved the cursor in the menu, an image of the cursor stayed at the first option, and another moved to the new option. I don't know if you wanted this or not though.

The monsters didn't attack or do anything.

When all the monsters were dead the battle kept on going, when I  selected an action, I got an error and the program closed.

And the graphics were very.. ugly (not the characters, but like the background, especially the town). The battle menu was also very bland.

In conclusion, its a start. But it still seems very incomplete. Personally I would have waited until you had a complete battle system and could actually do something in the game before putting up a demo, but thats just me.

Anyway, its pretty impresive to code something like this. My hat's off to you.  With a bit more work it could be pretty cool.

Oh yeah, and another big thing, add music! I'd think that be easy, but trust me, with a good battle theme, it'll make the whole thing a ton cooler ;)

lol I know the town is ugly but I haven't had time to change it.
Oh i should update the readme pressing left allows you to go back.

Alot of the things you have mentioned are on the list of things that need to be changed.

The arrow bug is driving me nuts but it's fairly trivial. As for the menu system it's bland but functional and it's quicker to swap images in then it is to code it in the first place, and i'm sure you would prefer something that works then something that doesn't and looks pretty :)

One of the many things that can be implemented is magic including the heal spell which currently has no code associated with it. To get it working will take about 5 minutes and 4 lines of code, which in the grand scheme of things is quite a small job :p

Anyway many thanks for trying it out, i'm hoping to generate some interest on the forum as I am desperate for help graphics and ideas wise. The game currently is almost ready to start accepting content (e.g magic, weapons, other graphics), I presented this in the hope people could see where it is going :)

Woo!! Another VB + DX guy!!

I too began a game in VB (VB6) with DX in 2D. It seems you got a lot farther than I did before I lost my drive. I also came here for sprite work. I'll check out what you got.

And DragonBlaze, go easy on the guy's work. Even though its incomplete, a running program is still an accomplishment. :D

Lol, I wasn't trying to be mean or anything :p But whenever I test through something, it's a rule of mine to point out everthing I see. Anyway, I said it before, and I'll say it again, impressive thus far ;)

lol it's actually quite cool to have people who are prepared to to test everything out, might find something that I don't know about :)
