chaos quest
« on: March 23, 2006, 12:57:00 AM »
Chaos quest is a game where an evil wizard is planning to destroy the world, but first he needs the -spoiler- to do it.  He decides to take them from the villages.  Hero Village is a village that has many stories to tell.  It's guard, Ancara, was interested in one of the stories.  This was the story:

one in the pit of hell
one in a freezing wasteland
one in a dense jungle
one in a tall mountain
one in a place for mourning
one in a place of light
one in a mysterious village
and one in a vast lake.

together, they have the power to defeat evil.

He decided to collect these items so he could protect the village.  Little does he know of thier true purpose...

Characters:

Ancara: 30

The village guard.  He's a careful man who never takes lite of evil, ever.  He acts tough but is really a nice guy (once you get to know him).  He attacks with his trusty axe.

Masaid: 17

a botonist with a firey temper.  get her mad, and you'll regret it.  She hates people know mess her experiments up.  She uses her medicines to cause various status effects to happen.

Yomoko: 24

A samurai who has a great sense of humor.  Once in a while, he'll crack out with a joke.  He's an all-around good guy.  He attacks with the Thico blade, a thin but deadly sword.

Zepher: 45

a genius with an IQ that would make your brain explode.  He is a loner, an outcast.  he prefers to be by himself when he needs to.  He uses various inventions to heal and hurt.

this game is basicly a game where you try to -spoiler removed-.

oh, and here's a screen to get you started on seeing what my game will look like.

I'm going to be honest, your game sounds very poor right now. Theres a great evil, you need to go out and collect objects to stop him, he needs to find an object to proceed. Its the most cliche plot there is. If a project is cliche, it means its been used many times and is very unoriginal.

The idea of going off in search of objects like this started in the first Final Fantasy where you searched for the crystals. It continued like that to FF5. A lot of other games have done it as well such as legend of dragoon, bahamut lagoon, and many more. The games like FF that used it were nice, but thats because when they used it it was original.

You're map is also pretty poor, its too blocky, and just wierd.

It seems as though you're fairly new to rpg maker. Which there is nothing wrong with it. I encourage you to  continue working with it and this project and you'll get better. :)

Hell Yeah! Just recovered all my old rm2k/3 games from my 10 year old, broken laptop hard drive that had been formatted and had a new OS installed on it. Oh, and I did all of this from my phone. WIN

in the game, between the middle and end, the evil wizzard asks for some help to defeat the group.  That's when he calls for -spoiler removed-.

oh, and here's a better picture of the world map (sorry about the black water):

ok, you want original, you got it.

ok, in the game, Ancara can can a skill that can do tons of damage to an opponent, but he has a 50-50 chance of dying.

also, three of the bosses in the game have captured the other characters.

I really don't like the idea of the bad guy to have the motive of "destroying the world", it's just... I dunno... I just don't like it. I'm sorry, but... maybe you could like... give him a different movtive for what he's doing. Try to be creative. I'm not a pro myself, so I really don't think I'm in any position to be judging games yet. But don't worry, I sort of started off at the same boat that you are in now. Here is my advice: If you are new, then maybe you shouldn't be showing off any of your games, showing off games is like a pro thing, and when your new, your not a pro. You should prabably be looking around at other people's games, and try to learn some stuff from it, You know, like better battle systems, or maybe even better extra things you can add on. And like, every night, while you lay in your bed, before you go to sleep, try to imagine parts of your game's story line, and every other night after that, keep on adding parts to it. This helps out in two ways: 1. It tires out your brain, so you can sleep better. 2. Your game will always just be getting better and better.

ok, ok.  his real motvie is to use the item to -spoiler removed-.

I want the real plan of the evil wizzard to be a scret until it's revealed (much later in the game).

also, be prepared for some suprises that make you scream with happiness when you see em.

That new map you made is empty. There is nothing to it, there is a chunk of land in the top right corner, a boat, and the rest is water. Now all world maps need large parts of water in between continents or whatnot, but those places aren't the least bit impressive, no matter what the game and how good the actual world map is. A picture with just a bunch of water shouldn't be a picture you use to present you game.

That skill is pretty cool, but I don't think a skill like that would really help to make your game more original as a whole.

The bosses capturing the characters could actually make the game worse :( If you have to go out to each boss indevidually and rescue them, then it probably will.

Here, I belive you deserve an explanation why searching for objects, characters, crystals, or whatever it is, is a bad thing. Searching for one object is fine, theres nothing at all wrong with it. Its perfectly fine to have  king or something send you to an old temple to retrieve a relic. Its ok to retrieve multiple things, like if that king told you to go to three temples and retrieve objects from them. The part where it gets bad would be if the king would ask you to go to those temples, but that takes up half the plot.

When you have the character go off in search of objects or whatever, they know what they're doing, and they know whats going on until the retrieve the last object. In the early final fantasy games, I knew exactly what I was doing the whole game, searching for the crystals. When the player can pretty much predict what they'll be doing for most of the game. Even if theres twists and other parts to the game besides searching for the objects, the game is still based on searching for objects.

Besides just being bad because the player can predict what they're going to be doing, the type of plot has been used over and over again hundreds of times. Sure your plot will be differant, but the format will be the same.

I played through Legend of Dragoon, the game had you search for moon objects for the first 3 disks. For the first three disks I was bored out of my mind because I knew exactly what I was going to be doing for the rest of the game. Sure they talked about other stuff and made the plot interesting, but that never changed the fact that I knew what I would be doing for the majority of the plot. Then, after you found all the moon objects, you had to go on a simular mission and find 3 new things which made the game even more boring for me.

So the longer you're searching for these things, the worse it gets.

I'm sorry I had to put down your game, I really am. But this is something that everyone has to learn eventually. If it wasnt me, someone else down the line would have said the same thing.

Though another thing you have to learn is that if you really want to make a game, you have to stick with it even if other people don't like it. You have to make this game for yourself, all that matters is that you like it and you enjoy working on it.

Yeah, DragonBlaze is right, YOU should make a game that YOU like, and not what OTHERS like, and yeah. I guess after I showed off my first game patheticly, I sorta still kept it the same... at least three characters the same... everything else I changed... because I was so sad... :(

HOLY COW!!! Those guys are RTP! Don't you think that maybe you should at least change them, so like it would be more of your own idea? Trust me, RTP really blocks off your creativity, and also, you, and prabably others would think it was much cooler if it wasn't RTP.

Why not just use the charas generators for all the characters, or you could just go ahead and use paint to make them all be YOUR own work of art. Everybody does that.
