The Scarface Larry CBS Project

ON HOLD FOR OTHER THINGS (you might see a little updates in a few centuries or years)

Yep, A CBS, I've seen alot of RPGMaker CBS tutorials out there and very few have ever worked for me. So I've decided to make a CBS editable by anyone. Although it's currently in lower-than-alpha status it should work to a certain degree.

How it works: The CBS is partnered with a CMS to go with it, but that comes later. This CBS only requires 1 battle map, but lots of events on that certain map. When you get into a battle you are given a choice of actions, these are customizable in any way, but the defaults are "attack", "skills", "defence" and "items". It also supports all equipped items and skills learnt by that char. HP's can be measured in either %ages or #s. The battles are played on a map, and your char can move on that map and attack your enemies with different skillsattacks. Enemies can also moved, it's probably going to be turn-based.

Currently Features:
*Support for only one char, but multiple enemies.

*Support for a large amount of equipped items and skills

*B-chars or special poses are not needed.

What I'll do next:
*The Movement system.

*Support for multiple characters.

*Area of Effect spells

*anything you suggest.

So check back here for updates, and suggest things for it, and I'll try to include them. Screenies before I die.

Update: Now included is a weather system, meaning that weather effects will be randomly selected in battle. This can be disabled or enabled.

Lol, I'm working on a simular project :p Anyway, this sounds pretty cool. It sounds a lot like the battle system from Chrono Trigger, is that what its going to be like?

I'm looking forward to some screens :)

Sweet, If I need some help I'll be sure to ask. What's it like? Well, you've got your chars on a feild, probably a map or something. I was planning to make only one map needed, and the backgrounds panoramas, which means they're able to be changed. I've made some changes: I've got multiple chars on the map now. It's also desinged to be used by newbs, so I'm using as little pics as possible. Basically you move around the field, when you are in a certain range of an enemy, you can attack, or vice-versa. This explains it: http://img93.imageshack.us/img93/2818/vgcats13fl.th.png
(from VGCats) I hope that explains most of it, if not, I'll try harder to explain it. For Screenies: Expect a loooooooooooooooooooooong time.

so, a lot of nice coding, but sucky looks, just because you're doing it for n00bs? Doesn't sound like a very good combination.

Well actually there's been a few CBS's with no pics that are still very good, If you don't believe me, check out the RPGMaker game "the frozen world" very few pics in that CBS, yet one of the best out there. anyways, it's made to be customizable, so if you don't like it, edit it.

I don't see how using pics or not using pics will make the cbs any harder or easier to use.  :|

Well, I suppose that pics make it look good. But I can easily make all needed pics into charsets. And I have screens if anyone wants them, but they're just after a few days of work, so don't expect anything special.

Pics can be magnified/condensed, rotated, tinted, transparent(ed?), and move a lot smoother.

.'. Pictures > Charsets

I too am making a CBS (though closer to a FF style than a ABS) and I use actual charsets as little as I can (though I do use them for Hp and Mp because of the 50 pic limit.

Good Point, but the point of this CBS is to Give people an easy to edit yet good CBS, and I find that Charsets give me all I need, But I'm still using pictures, CBS' are VERY hard without them.

Actually, I find pictures much easier to use than charsets. With pictures, you can display them with the common events, with charsets, you use maps. If you already made some battles in  you're game, you'd have to edit or remake every battle map if you want to make a change, with pictures, you don't have to.

Another thing with pictures that make them easy to use is that you can display them at a variable referance. You can set it up so that its VERY easy to edit the location of the hp/mp/damage/etc. Heres how I do it in my battle system:

I have an event on the map, its just place holders. Then in the common events, I take the location of that event, turn it into variables, Take those variables, add an x and a y offset, and display the hero stats at that location. The x and y offset is so that the stats can be displayed at any location rather than intervals of 16 pixals. Then for hp and mp, I display the hp pic at a variable location relative to the menux and menuy locations, plus another x and y offset so you can place it anywhere. The second hp digit is displayed at a location relitive to the first hp digit, etc. This way, you can move an event on the map around and it'll change the location of the hero stats and everything in that box. Plus you can make all the detailing by simply modifying the x and y offset variables that are located in a config common event as that way they're easy to find.

I don't think my way is any more easier than your way, but then again with a simple readme that tells about the config common event, I doubt it'll be any harder. The thing is that pictures are much more versitile and powerful than charsets. And if you're battle system is based off of on map events, you'll have to remake all the battles if you just want to make one minor change to the battle system. I learned that first hand with my last battle system :(

I agree with everything you said, but most people aren't that great with pictures, map events however are easier to edit by newer users. But if it was any other cbs, pictures, pictures, pictures. About the remaking maps, even with pictures that can still be a problem, CBS' are never easy, that's why so many of the tutorials for it out there aren't that useful. Now if we're talking about a certain RPGMaker after 2003, CBS' are MUCH MUCH easier, but I won't go into it.

Well, if you want to make it easily customizible, make sure that most events are in the Common Event section instead of on the map, because that makes changes MUCH easier.

Trust me, I know that. Most people would rather spend a few mins editing one event than editing 100s.
