Spore uses procedural generation which, besides being shrouded in mystery as to how it works on a software level, is able to produce random yet coherent things, including animations for your creature or other planets.

Spore is able to connect online and download new species automatically from a server that holds several species designs created by other players. It's a sort of half-online capability that serves the game better than full or no online functioning would.

Spore DS couldn't possibly be just like the PC one. I'd expect it to be in 2d and limited in designs for your creature and stuff for it to do. Trying to emulate the PC version would make it boring, when they could create a cooler game based off of the Spore concept that uses the touchscreen.

Well I imagine the stylus might be like a mouse, and as far as 2d goes, I'd reckon they could pull off 3D. It would be like Mario 64 DS or something

I think that they'll do a 2D universe with a bunch of sprites and stuff, and you can choose a galaxy>solar system>planet, and then edit what all happens there It might end up as an isometric view with sprites (clearly, this'll limit the creator options, but it'll still make things fun and interesting), and a possible "Download Planet" option could exist, where you could do something similar to THAS to choose what to download (register your DS and game code online, then download something to your online profile, and then choose "Download Planet" in the game's possible wi-fi mode to upload the planets/species/whatever from online. In Tony Hawk, you can download boards and sprays). That would make sense, and it'd be way more probable than 3D and ginormous.

If they do put Spore on a handheld, it's more likely that they'd put it on the PSP. The DS just doesn't have the power to do that kind of game.
Of course, they could always put it on the Wii...

It's not that 3d isn't possible, more that it's not probable for something like this. The benefits of 2d outweigh the cons of 3d.

I say... PC>DS in this case. Just won't be as smooth.

Yes, that's been agreed upon, but I think that they could make it a worthwhile buy, assuming that they add something to make it interesting (like the download I mentioned earlier), or some variety of minigames. As for impossible, though, I beg to differ: the DS has two processors (not like that matters too much for the game if it's 2D), making it 2D means more content can be crammed in, the DS has a new form of microcompression developed and used exclusively by Nintendo (look it up for details), it has a heavy amount of space reserved almost exclusively for game saves, and the idea of a memory card for port 2 (the GBA port), and an expansion pack (think N64 here) means that even more data can be shoved into the tiny cartridge. I say it's very possible, but it'll take some work. And yeah, the expansion pack/memory card idea would work if they retain the possibility to remove cartridges from port 2 during play. Wii Spore does sound interesting, but it'd be more or less the PC version, sans a mouse. And PSP? Not from what I see here:
