Pokemon Fangame
« on: September 01, 2006, 01:08:23 AM »
I've been in the Rpg Maker community for quite a while now, and I noticed a long running trend:

Bad Pokemon fan games

Most people attribute this to the fact that Pokemon fans are too young to handle the rigors of coding, I just think its because no one has really given it a good go.

So, I got bored last night and began to work on my Fangame.
It has no name so far and has no plot (other than the standard Pokemon one).

BUT I did spen four hours coding the CBS!
AND IT WORKS!

This is the single most complicated thing I have ever done with RM2K, I always knew I could code, but I never really did anything past standard banking and Item creation systems.

Tell me what you guys think:

I can't see any of the pics. I'd rather you use Imageshack or Photobucket or something.

i disagree that pokemon fangames suck go to www.ptei.tk and play ptei2 that is one of my favourite games, not really a pokemon fangame but it is a pokemon game, shoot the pokemon though. i also cant see the pictures so i cant judge much on the cbs but four hours isnt enough for a cbs, my cbs which you can find in the games section has been worked on for a month and has had bad ratings, and mine is no where near done, p.s if you get any nobends who say give up dnt listen to them, ull neva get anywhere if u listen to them, speaking from experience

Ehhhh... guess people can't see it. A problem with Pokemon, period, is there is no storyline and thus really nothing there to work on or make sense of. XD This is why, among other things, I never will consider Pokemon a real RPG.

I saw them, and I can just say you have a major problem here. You're using the Fire Red/Leaf Green Charsets with the chips from Gold/Silver. Big problem.

I agree with deithe2, 4 hours is not enough time to make a good battle system. Since pokemon is only a one verse one battle system, and there isn't that many commands, it won't take as long as a normal cbs, BUT, it'll take more than 4 hours.

How do you determain battle damage? Did you actually make a formula that uses the heros attack and the enemies defence? Do you have status effects? Do you have elemental proporties? Have you added an item system? How do you show the damage, is it just text, or did you actually take the time and code it so it looks nice and uses pictures?

I can see how you could have gotten a decent start in 4 hours, but you can't have anywhere near an even decent cbs in that time.

As for pokemon fan games, IF you have a plot like in the games (collect the 8 badges, then fight the 4 people), you might as well stop right now because that is the most cliche, unoriginal, dull, and stupid plot imaginable. If you have an original plot though, I'd say go for it. Personally I don't like fangames because I'd rather see something orignal than a stolen idea, but sometimes they can be good.

DB, thats like saying make a Zelda game where you don't have to collect [insert number] ceratin objects. 8 badges, 4 bosses with 5th final boss IS pokemon. Adding a story to a pokemon game would make it as gay as the cartoon.

Lol, well even so, if you make it like the games, it'll be basically a complete rip-off without a plot, thus it'll be really bad. With an original story, it has a CHANCE of being decent.

Its a Pokemon RM2K/3 game, there will never be a chance of it being decent.

i disagree with the sandwich guy, i hate pokemon but i love the games and not because they have story lines but because of the whole catching and raising idea, i am not sure how this will work in rm2k but go for it and make it good, i think this can only work in rmxp though because of the variables but hey what do i know go 4 it and put on some god damn screenshots

I like the catching and rasising system as well, but if this is made just like the gameboy games, I might as well play them instead of this one.

And I'm pretty sure all the systems in pokemon (menu, battle, pc) are all doible in rm2k/3. Instead of using variables to store the pokemon (you would need around 3000 just to store 150 pokemon data) you could use heros and classes. Make 151 heros (1 for ash or whoever you have and 150 for pokemon), make a class for each evolution stage of each pokemon. When you catch/get a pokemon, check to see which heros have been added to your party yet, add the first one that hasn't been added yet. Change its name to the pokemon name, change its level to the level, and set its class to the pokemon and evelution stage. Then, whenever you want to get stats for that pokemon, you just look up the stats for that hero.
