I would have put a cage around the blades or something. I'm sure there's a perfectly good explanation for why there isn't one, but I know so little about how helicopters work that I can't think of anything.

That explains the person that it's lifting. A cage made from aluminum or some other lightweight metal would do the trick without adding too much extra weight.
